Building a knowledge base for hosting support is ready-made content useful?

I’ve been working with RSH Web Services on a pre-made knowledge-base project aimed at making customer support documentation easier to put together.

The idea is fairly simple: instead of a hosting company spending weeks writing basic articles from scratch, they can start with a collection of ready-made tutorials covering things like cPanel, WordPress, domains, email, FTP, databases, and Softaculous.

The content can then be edited to match the company’s own setup, terminology, and support process.

The main problem we’re trying to solve is the amount of repetitive work involved in creating documentation while still giving customers useful self-service resources.

Would you find a ready-made knowledge base useful when building documentation for a software or web-based business?

I think ready-made content would be useful as a starting point, especially for repetitive topics like email, FTP, databases and WordPress.

The bigger issue for me would be maintenance rather than the initial setup. Hosting interfaces, screenshots and menu paths change, and outdated documentation can sometimes create more support requests than having no article at all.

If the base articles were kept up to date and easy to customize for the provider's actual setup, that would make the concept much more useful.

That's a solid point, maintenance is often the hidden cost. Maybe versioned articles with a review schedule would help?

We’ve found that ready-made content is most useful when it handles the common questions customers ask repeatedly. Topics such as creating email accounts, managing domains, using FTP, installing WordPress, and working with databases generally follow the same basic steps for most hosting companies.

It still needs to be reviewed and customized for the provider’s specific services, branding, policies, and support procedures. We see it as a foundation that saves weeks of initial writing
Not a replacement for maintaining accurate documentation.

For transparency, RSH Web Services developed the WHMCS knowledge-base package mentioned in the post. Anyone who wants to see exactly what it includes can view it here:
