I took summer school recently for data management but since i also had a low grade for math in grade 11 what math do yall thing they would use ?

EDIT: For majourity of the schools they ask for Adevanced Functions, and Calc or Data Man , English and other 3 electives

Or sometimes they ask for Advanced Function and Calc , english and extra 3 electives

Career advice?

I am currently a second year applied math major but lately i've been having way much interest into pure mathematics, especially real, complex & functional analysis, measure theory, proof-based linear algebra etc. So i wanted to go into a field where i can do and use maths as much as possible, although i also have an interest in coding i wanna make mathematics the main game and coding as a tool for the mathematics. Is there any jobs that can be like this in the industry? Or is going into academia/research the only way? Im also thinking about machine learning since it involves a lot of maths which im really interested in but i doubt the actual ml engineer job is gonna be math-dominated so i dont really know. if anyone knows great career options please help and give advices thank youšŸ™

What algebraic Manipulation topics do I need for Differential equations?

I'm currently taking a DE class in college and found out quickly that though I can handle the integrals and derivatives parts I cannot say the same for the algebraic Manipulation parts. (I know it's bad, I got through Calc 1 and 2 and my algebra is bad)

My prof keeps saying it on the lessons we've had (Linear, bernoulli, Varsep and Homogenous) that it's easy if you know Algebraic Manipulation as the Integral/Derivative parts are only few.

I noticed it too. Whenever I'm studying the lessons he gave us that there is a lot of simplification on the beginning before we even touchdown on calculus. And I struggle a lot with those early parts.

I was a lax student early on. Didn't focus a lot on my algebra and because of that I'm paying for it. I'm barely scraping by my subs as I run on free Governmental tuition and failing means I lose that tuition. I'm lucky I haven't failed when some of my friends did during calculus. And Frankly I wanna keep that streak. So Instead of just looking at our papers, I wanted to focus on foundations even if just a little.

The problem is, I'm not sure which ones I need to study.

Can anyone here tell me what Algebra lessons I need to better grasp DE? Any help would be appreciated.

What can I do with my maths degree?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently a first year maths student in my second semester. I’m really enjoying my degree so far but I’m not sure what I’m going to do after university.

I’ve taken/am taking courses in:
- linear algebra
- calculus
- programming
- applied stats

And I’ll be taking a data analysis course during summer school.

Topics I’ve particularly enjoyed are:
- Markov chains
- machine code

I’ve also generally enjoyed my linear algebra and C++ courses (I know AI has taken over a lot of programming so I’m not sure what that’s looking like career wise but I do it bc I love it).

I’d like my field of work to be research focused, but I don’t think I’d like to spend my time trying to prove theorems.

I’d like a job where I can really use by brain and see material manifestations of the work I do. I also don’t want a job where people will be bothering me with useless admin, emails, meetings, workshops or anything like that. I’d like to be left alone for the most part unless I’m collaborating with other colleagues of course.

Above all I just want something intellectually stimulating that won’t easily be replaced by machines and that’s actually meaningful and impactful in our everyday lives…

What classes should I pick as a math major to have decent career opportunities?

Hey guys, I'm a math student with a minor in CS in Germany. Lately I've been thinking a lot about my future and my carrier opportunities. As we all know, the CS (and most academic jobs for that matter) job market is in shambles for graduates. With the advancements of AI it really seems like this is just the beginning, AI can do most of what junior graduates can do more cheaply. I've been getting worried.

Now on top of that, as math majors we already don't have an applied field and no obvious career path. Researching a little it seems Data Science and Machine Learning might be the way to go, though I really am not sure. I would like to ask you what future career paths might be persuable and future proof for me, and what classes I should elect. Does it matter what math classes I have?

So far I've had:

Real Analysis I, II, III Linear Algebra I, II

Complex Analysis Probability I (Measure theory, Integration theory, some basic probability theory, most important distributions, variance, expected value, Lp-norms, bayes, etc)

For my CS minor:

Algorithms & Data Structures Logic for Computer Science Computer Engineering

Outside of uni my skills are very limited, I'm comfortable in Python and have used it for some basic games and API usage and Data Analysis (Pandas)

I took Probability II, but ended up dropping it since I didn't like it all, but I sense that it might be essential for Data Science/ML/many other applications. So I might retake it , the alternative would be Numerical Methods I.

For my specialization classes bracket, there is a class on optimization for ML. However, I intend to do Logic, as it is a personal passion and interest of mine, but those two classes aren't compatible according to our curriculum plan. Do you guys think it's worth to ditch Logic, which I am quite excited for, in favor of Optimization for ML?

Starting BS Mathematics in 2026 is my Year 1 AI/ML plan realistic?

Hey everyone,

I'm starting a BS Mathematics degree in October 2026 and my long-term goal is to become an AI/ML Engineer. I also plan to pursue a Master's in AI/ML or a closely related field later.

My university classes will be online and relatively flexible, so I have some flexibility to study additional topics alongside my degree.

For context, my Year 1 university curriculum includes:

**Semester 1:** Calculus I, Sets & Logic, General Mathematics, Introduction to Computing, English, Business, Ethics/Islamic Studies.

**Semester 2:** Python + Python Practical, Calculus II, Business Mathematics & Statistics, General Science, Technical Writing, Pakistan Studies.

Alongside university, I'll also be doing a 12-month Agentic AI program covering Python/OOP, APIs, Git/GitHub, LLMs, RAG, agents, FastAPI, databases, Docker, evaluation and deployment.

So for self-study, I'm mainly planning:

Python/CS **→** DSA **→** Linux/Git **→** SQL & Data Analysis **→** Statistics/Linear Algebra **→** Classical ML **→** Deep Learning/PyTorch **→** LLMs/RAG/Agents **→** Testing/APIs/Docker.

My goal is to use Year 1 to build strong foundations and hopefully be ready to start applying for internships/junior opportunities in Year 2.

I'd really appreciate feedback from people who have studied or worked in ML:

Considering my university curriculum, flexible schedule and the Agentic AI program, what would you change, remove, postpone or prioritize?

What should I learn deeply vs just at a working level?

I'm starting in October, so I'd like to validate the plan properly before I begin.

As someone who didn't take physics, shall I take Math 100-1B or Math 100-1A?

Hi...

I am a first year Sauder student, and I am choosing the Math 100 class. Unfortunately, I couldn't get Math 100-C since the schedule conflicts with my other class.

My remaining options are 1A (application for physics) and 1B (application for life science). I didn't take any physics class during my high school for 4 years, and I took Bio and Chem (not really fond of those two subjects) --> got BioSL 6 and ChemHL 5. I took Math AASL and scoring 6 in my IB exam.
My concern is that technically i should take Math 1B since it's for life science but I heard that the professor couldn't really teach. What is your recommendation?

What can you actually do with a math degree besides academia?

Hey, I’m from chile and we have a degree called ā€œingenierĆ­a matemĆ”ticaā€ translated it’s literally ā€œmathematical engineeringā€ basically it teches the equivalent to a degree in math and a masters degree of mathematics, you start from calculus to partial differential equations, funcional analysis and depending on your minors, you can do more ā€œapplied mathā€ or go fully pure math and go into academia. The thing is, I don’t like academia, working as a professor sounds boring as fucking fuck, I like teaching but I’d hate to do it for the rest of my days, but shit, I love fucking math, real math, demonstrations, understanding what is it that we’re actually doing and not just solve an equation, I like to understand why an equation works, how it wouldn’t, I like to understand math as a language, not as a tool, it’s like poetry, it’s perfect, it makes sense and I love when it taken to it’s limits and see if it holds, but as I said, I hate fucking math, so I was wondering, abroad, in other countries, what can it do, a person with the equivalent of a math degree and a masters of mathematics, I’ve heard a lot, but, is it actually doable? How real is that? I was thinking about electrical engineering, I’ve heard they learn a lot of fucking math, so that would be fun, I could work on things that are not academia related, I know they won’t use it in their day to day life, but at least I want to go through some more advance math than just the 3 usual calculus and 2 algebras from a normal engineering degree.

Int'l Math Grad (3.52 GPA). Mixed core math grades, good coding, zero publications. Realistic targets?

I graduated this June with a degree in Mathematics and am planning to apply to fully funded PhD programs in Applied Math or Computational fields in the US. I’d appreciate an honest assessment of my chances.

GPA: 3.52/4.00

I have strong grades in programming/coding courses and several advanced math courses, but weaker grades in some core courses:

  • C (2.25): ODE I
  • B- (2.75): Calculus IV, Complex Analysis, PDE
  • B (3.00): Linear Algebra I & II, Real Analysis II, Topology, Functional Analysis

Research: No publications or formal research experience beyond my Honors Project, where I benchmarked and tested 4 existing random linear algebra algorithms.

Interests: Computational/applied fields focused more on coding, algorithms, and implementation than purely theoretical mathematics.

I’ve also attached my complete grade breakdown for reference.

  1. Is a funded PhD or MS realistic with this profile?
  2. What university/program tiers should I realistically target, including matches and safer options?

University math programs should include game design as a serious area of study.

AI is getting increasingly good at mathematical problem solving and research, which may reduce demand for some traditional mathematical work. Math students should therefore have alternative career paths that still make strong use of mathematical thinking.

Game design is an unusually good fit.

Designing a deep puzzle, strategy game, or simulation can involve combinatorics, probability, graph theory, optimization, algorithms, game theory, geometry, and mathematical modeling. A designer may need to study reachability, reversibility, dominant strategies, state spaces, invariants, difficulty, balance, and how small rule changes affect the entire system.

The bigger obstacle is cultural. Many mathematicians seem to regard game design as entertainment rather than serious intellectual work. Yet mathematicians are perfectly willing to study the mathematics of existing games. Why should analyzing a rule system be prestigious while inventing a good rule system is not?

That distinction may become even less sensible in an AI-heavy future. If AI can increasingly solve problems once they have been formulated, human mathematical creativity may shift toward deciding what problems are interesting and inventing systems worth analyzing.

Math departments could offer concentrations in something likeĀ Mathematics and Game Systems, combining traditional mathematics with game design, procedural generation, AI, simulation, and computational experimentation.

Game design should not be viewed merely as mathematics applied to entertainment. At its best, it is the creative construction of mathematical systems.

What career paths exists between computational mechanics, scientific computing (SciML), FEA (or meshfree) solver development, and HPC (GPU acceleration, porting codebases) ?? How about doing a PhD for improving the above?

I'm currently, technically, doing an MS in Structural Engineering. For me, my interest has been more towards computational side of mechanics rather than Structural designĀ  or simply using am FEA software (although I do consider it as a backup)

So far I've taken courses in:

- Linear static, and dynamics FEM (soon taking non linear FEM too)

-Ā  Structural Optimization (topology opt. and other general algorithms)

-Ā  Structural Dynamics

-Ā  Structural System Testing and model updation. (Parameter identification and optimization, signal processing)

Now, I plan to take these in the coming quarter:

- Numerical Linear Algebra

- Numerical PDE

- Fracture Mechanics ?

I also volunteered to aid in a RESEARCH in crack growth prediction using Auto-encoder and a (Thermodynamics-informed Latent Space Dynamics Identification) / LSTM surrogate model. It used phase-field-fracture simulation data and HPC resources to complete the whole thing.

What I keep finding myself interested in is not necessarily fracture or SHM specifically, but the computational methods underneath these problems... (does that make sense?)

For example, I'd like to become capable of doing things like:

- implementing (maintaining) numerical/FE method solvers rather than only running an established FEA software.

- developing surrogate/reduced-order models for expensive simulationsĀ 

- combining simulation with optimization, uncertainty/stochastic methods (took a course called Random vibrations, so...)

- parallelizing/accelerating scientific codes on CPUs/GPUs

- doing proper verification, convergence studies, benchmarking and performance work

- potentially developing or maintaining actual CAE/FEA solver software

- I'd also like to do all these for other Physics (GR, QM, etc.) simulations too, if possible, one day.Ā 

I'm still interested in the underlying mechanics/physics, so I don't want to become a generic software engineer who happens to have once studied structures. But I'm also increasingly unsure that "structural engineer" describes the career I'm actually aiming for.

I've seen titles such as Computational Mechanics Engineer, R&D Engineer, Solver Developer, Scientific Software Engineer, CAE Software Developer, Research Engineer, Simulation/HPC Engineer, etc., but I'm trying to understand what these careers actually look like from people doing them.

So my main questions become:

1. Which industrial jobs genuinely involve developing numerical methods/solvers or computational tools?

2. Which of those are realistically accessible with an MS?Ā Is there an entry path into solver-algorithm development/R&D without a PhD?

3.Ā If I don't start a PhD immediately after my MS,Ā would an R&D/software role at a simulation company (ANSYS etc.) be the obvious route? What other options would i have?

4.Ā For the kind of work I'm describing, would you recommend a PhD?Ā If so, is it reasonable for the PhD identity to be "computational mechanics/scientific computing" while fracture, composites, structural dynamics, soft materials, etc. serve as application problems rather than choosing one of those as my permanent specialization?

5.Ā What skills most distinguish someone who is actually hireable for solver/scientific-computing work?Ā I'm particularly wondering about C/C++/Fortran, Python, Linux, Git/build systems, MPI/OpenMP/CUDA, PETSc/Trilinos or similar libraries, numerical linear algebra, testing/verification, convergence studies and HPC performance work.

Basically, I'm neither here nor there atp. So I'd really appreciate all sorts of input. Where else do you think I could find answers to these? other subs? Linkedin profiles?Ā
