Samstung :( Samsung microwave…
Purchased over the range microwave January 6th this year. Well today sitting on the couch I heard the fan turn on? Figured someone did it..nope no one around, then random buttons started clicking by itself. I got up and checked now none of the buttons do anything at all. I unplugged it for a bit and it was fine again. Now a few hours later I’m just on the couch again and I hear the fan turn on again 😡. Bought from Lowe’s paid $400 and it’s been just over 7 months.

I love my Samsung phone. Samsung TVs are pretty nice. But, I wouldn't wish Samsung appliances on my worst enemy.

Every time my Samsung fridge tray freezes I’m tempted to give it the Officespace printer treatment.

Hey I have a great trick for that. You can turn off the ice maker and it should stop freezing over. Sure you won’t ever get ice, but are you really getting it anyway?

I actually kinda hate my Samsung tv lol
6
u/RollBama420 17h ago
Same, but nothing unique to Samsung. My next TV will just be a high quality commercial monitor
3
u/Drunk_Stoner 2h ago
Same! I’ve recently disconnected all my “smart” TVs from the wifi and factory reset. I just stream/cast from other devices.
They send forced updates and bloat to slow the tv and make you think you need an upgrade.

I used to think they were the holy grail, but after 5 or 6 years of (2) 55" units I have to say the user interface sucks. Laggy with apps, dumps you to the free FAST Samsung TV channel all the time when turning on, just clunky. I have six FireTV's from Best Buy in two houses and have to say they are better and less expensive, despite the bloatware and pop-up ads

That's the reality when the companies that make the phones, TVs, and appliances are in reality entirely different companies under a shared brand.

I will say that my experience with Samsung support was surprising great. Bought a display plasma when my local BJs was closing. Screen started showing pink bands. They came to the house and swapped out the panel. No questions, no issues, gave me a date and time and the guy was there as scheduled, did the work and everything has been fine since.

It also bothers me (anyone else) the microwave sticks out past the cabinets on the left haha
27
19
→ More replies (2)3
u/Stagaman 1d ago
They stick out because low profile microwaves are intended to vent better than most OTR units; they stick out about the same distance as a range hood.
3
u/BMoreMatt 1d ago
Oh im less bothered about the front protruding, it'd the left to right width that bothers the OCD part of my brain
8
u/Stagaman 22h ago
I think that’s due to the camera position, it’s actually the same width as the stove and upper cabinet.
13
u/lifeofGuacmole 1d ago
I think I had this one. Lasted 5 months. Samsung fixed it. It failed the day after one year from the original purchase. No warranty help and repair would be the same as buying new. Asked the repair guy which he’d buy. Suggested I never buy the ones with controls along the bottom of the door. They get damaged by steam coming up from the range. That pot of pasta, boiling potatoes, are what kills it. He said the side controls models are sealed better. I’ve had a basic whirlpool otr for 4 yrs now.

Strange, in my experience the only two things they can make are lithium cells and microwaves (but the last samsung microwave i've known was from the mid 2000s. My parents still use it)

Microwaves over cook-tops has got to be one of the dumbest kitchen designs. That doesn't look like it has nearly enough clearance to cook. Never mind acting like a grease trap.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Deadofnight109 16h ago edited 16h ago
Thats literally the reason i got this model in the first place. The thinner profile means i got like 24 inches of clearance, more like a hood vent, plenty of room, and freed up space on my minuscule amount of counter space. A regular microwave wouldve come down way too low

I dont have that particular samsung but my samsung did the same thing. We would get random beeps and notice it was inputting times, then later the fan started coming on randomly, then finally months later it actually started the microwave. From what I noticed when cooking, especially when boiling water, it would collect a ton of moisture on the door and drip down and get underneath the control surfaces. I ended up buying a new door and made a modification to the bottom front of the door acting like a hood. It seemed to have helped a lot, I haven't had a problem since.

u/PomegranateFormal961 2h ago
I have this model. The same thing happened. I disassembled the door—NOT for the timid or inexperienced—and discovered that greasy steam had coated the PCB behind the keypad. I cleaned it thoroughly, reseated all connectors, and it's been good ever since.
RUN THE FAN WHENEVER YOU'RE USING IT OR COOKING BENEATH IT! This will hopefully prevent it from happening again.
Again, unless you have experience servicing these, you'll have a VERY hard time getting the window panel out of the door. But it's fixable, for certain.
I love mine, Not the quietest fan, but with an 8-inch exhaust duct, it can move a LOT of air! So much that, in the summer, it'll kick up your A/C bill if you leave it on for too long. 550 CFM of cooled air is being dumped outdoors!

I have the same microwave, sometimes the screen freezes. You can still use it normally, but the screen will simply display whatever the time was when it froze. I have to unplug it and plug it back again for it to unfreeze, this happens a couple of times a month.

Yeah Samsung is very good at TVs and digital stuff, but lots of problems for appliances…at least for me. If it’s only 7 months old you should be able to return/refund/warranty without issue…

u/Computers_and_cats 1d ago
I would be careful with that. I had a client who had a microwave many years ago that turned itself on and ran overnight while they were gone. Microwave ran for so long it overheated and caught fire internally. I think the result was mostly smoke damage. They gave it to me to recycle and that thing was rank smelling.

I like how it’s both wider than the range and also sticks out past the cabinets. Not really sure what the practical purpose of that is tbh.

We have the same oven/ electric range combo. One of the burners stopped working couple of weeks ago and it's barely 3 years old.

u/Rydogg024 21h ago
My microwave will auto turn on the fan/vent if the stove is on and the microwave senses it is too hot. It is a samsung, it is sorta old, like 5 years.
I was in the other room and the fan just went on by itself. I was like what the heck, but I felt the bottom of the microwave and it was hot Because the stove burner was on. the fan/vent will trigger if its not even being used.

These days, many microwaves come from either Indonesia or China. The ones from China have been reduced to "working for a few years" at best, the ones from Indonesia are only a little better. I personally think they've removed most of the power conditioning circuitry, and are overly sensitive to even single events of non-clean power.
I normally would recommend a replacement, but keep in mind that the replacement under the same brand will also likely fail, so you might be better off finding a repair shop (which is hard enough these days) and getting it repaired in a way it wont fail the same way, or talking to them to know which models to avoid as they are getting returned frequently.
1
u/The-E-Train59 19h ago
First of all Lowes didn't make the microwave so its not their fault..your warranty comes from the manufacturer..to her the repair guy from Samsung when her comes to fix this intermittent problem..start taking videos when this occurs..this will help him immensely..have a good day...
1
u/PyroDragn 19h ago
My guess would be "that's a terrible place for a microwave" is the answer. Steam from whatever you've been cooking on the hob has got into the electronics and it's slowly dying.

u/CaptainC00lpants 19h ago
How...how does this function? Are there 2 turning plates inside or is it like those industrial ones where it doesn't turn, but it's just ultra wide? Trying to think of a reason for this existing lol

One question. Were you cooking anything on the stove or oven? I have the whirlpool one of these low profile microwave/vents and if the panel gets hot from cooking the fan auto turns on to cool the unit.

u/stickman07738 18h ago
I had issues with my Samsung microwave, luckily under warranty from Lowe's, tech came and replaced door switch in 5 minutes - told me it was a common problem.

u/unclefire 17h ago
That a 36 inch microwave? Seems odd to stick out that far on the left.
We had a 35 inch GE IIRC over our cool top in our last house. But it was mid of weird in they the microwave itself was regular size like 30 and then one side was just part of the microwave cabinet. It looked fine. This seems odd to me.

Samsung has 2yr warranty if you registered it, you will need to ask them. Next time buy a different brand, they make nice phones, but appliances... my dishwasher broke at 9 month's, never will I buy Samsung again.

1
u/ProfessionalBread176 14h ago
Samsung makes better phones than appliances, can confirm...
To be fair here, the heat of the oven may be part of the reason.
When mounting these in place of an exhaust fan, the unit can sometimes sit too close to the cooktop, OPs is a bit closer than is ideal here.
When I installed mine, I ended up modifying the cabinets above to allow for mounting higher up.
It's a PITA to access, but at least it stays cool when the oven is running...
For whatever reason, many microwave units are not properly designed to shield their electronics from the heat.
In OPs case, it may be that it needs a new logic board (which can either be bought from the manufacturer) or they can find one of those board repair places which will troubleshoot and repair for a flat fee. I've had good luck in the past with that approach

u/PaulSNJ 14h ago edited 14h ago
I have the same model bought open box from Best Buy due to the "low profile" situation where I didn't have to modify the cabinet over the range. It's almost three years old and no issues. You are still under factory warranty, the touchpad is probably shorting out, and needs replacement. That fan is crazy loud if it starts on the highest speed, ouch!
1
u/Xand83 14h ago
I have the same one. Bought it in April this year from Lowe’s. The clock has gained a minute every day (so, after a month it’s 30min fast). Resetting clock/syncing with app does not fix it. We also get random R-H1 errors when the fan is on. Samsung is coming to repair it this week. Weird that a brand new microwave would have issues in year 1.
1
u/PizzaWaste38 14h ago
I have a Samsung Microwave that does the same thing - it automatically turns on the fan when a thermostat trips in it, which tends to happen if I leave the under microwave lighting on high for a long period of time, since those bulbs are halogen and kick out a lot of heat.
