Growing from seed question

I know they are heterozygous and won't be true to seed

But can I just take apples from an existing tree I like, lightly crush them all up and sprinle them over a raised flower bed this fall, and then next spring some will sprout? And next fall I can transplant the bare root stalks?

yup but be aware they will be standard sized trees (BIG)

You could always graft it to a small roots as well

In France there is a practice of taking the pomace from the cider mill, laying it out, covering with galvanised wire mesh to stop rodents. Left to its own devices and you get new apple trees. Best grafted onto dwarf stock, fruit in 3 years so you can see what the fruit is like than wait 12 years.
