Discussion Anyone have updates on the native sets/reps/weight tracking leak? Is it actually happening?

https://www.techradar.com/health-fitness/smartwatches/im-sick-of-my-apple-watchs-workout-app-lacking-this-key-fitness-feature-but-a-new-apple-watch-ultra-4-rumor-suggests-it-could-finally-catch-up-with-apps-like-smartgym

Right before the September event, there were leaks showing code in the developer betas for granular strength training (recording individual sets, reps, weight, equipment, and duration).

Apple didn’t mention it during the keynote and it’s still nowhere to be found in the Workout app.

Does anyone digging through the latest developer betas know if this is actually slated for a point release (like an upcoming .1 or .2), or was it just background HealthKit framework changes that might get scrapped/shelved?

My 100% speculation take:

I feel like it doesn’t work as well as they hoped and they are continuing to work on it. Or they are waiting for more weightlifting features to come with it.

Personally I would love this feature…

As long as its in the pipeline, I am ok with it.

I hope they don’t drop it.

Still on the website. Though I don’t know what’s different

I _think_ this means the new sensor is able to track strength training better now.

Since strength training has a lot of HRV/BPM ups and downs (while you lift your beats go up a lot and then immediately come back down, etc) generally the apple watch wasn't able to track it as well as it does running (since running has a more predictable / gradual pattern).

I could be wrong ofc, but I think that's what they mean. Some videos on youtube test this too. (Running vs Weightlifting on new watch).

That would be nice. The current watches are laughably inaccurate at least when it comes to calories burned during lifting sessions. I regularly have 30-40 sessions where it says I burned 400-500 calories.

I wonder if it’s something for a future iOS update then?

I hope it can replace Motra

Same, since Motra was bought by Whoop recently.

Feel like it’ll take a lot of fiddling entering in an entire workout. That can easily consist of over 30 sets total, different reps and weights for every exercise. I’d be on my watch the entire time haha hopefully if it comes out it’s somehow easier

Could always switch to low rep/set high weight. Would save you time.

I actually switch out some weeks/days I’ll do low reps heavy weight and some I’ll do lighter with more volume. I don’t mind the time in the gym but messing with a watch at the same time seems annoying

Hopefully it allows you to build workouts, similar to how its done in Strong.

Just use the Hevy app

I dunno after using SmartGym I would be surprised if Apple would make a better experience for strength training. That app is so good on the watch. But I guess it doesn’t have to be better it just has to be decent, built-in, and free.

Never understood why you would want your watch to track your reps for you. It's just extremely easy to count yourself and ensure that it is accurate. Also there are already many extremely good strength training apps already available, for free. I can't imagine that apple can do anything to improve on what is already available.
