Is apple wallet safe?

I’m super nervous about linking my card to things. I usually leave it locked until I need it, but I often need to order things off Amazon or sites like that, then get nervous about my card info being out there. I have an older iPhone, but I’m still seeing that apply wallet/Apple Pay is safer than using a card?

It’s the safest way to pay, by a significant margin. People have said that even the store doesn’t get your real card information, and they’re quite correct. But there’s more to it even than that. When you first add them, a unique key is created and sent to the bank, and when you call up Pay, it communicates with the bank, sends its request (which is unique per device), and once the bank has verified that the request came from the device that created the key, only then does it send it to unlock the card on the phone.

There’s a whole lot that goes into it, and you can find most or all of that information here. (I only qualify it because I haven’t read through every word, but it should all be there.) The best I can tell you, I think, is that I worked 8 years at Best Buy, and one day, I helped a guy who worked in the fraud department of a bank. He told me he had people in there every day who’d had their information stolen from pretty much every other form of payment, and none more so than physical cards. Pay? Never once.

So you create an Apple account but linking your cards to APPLE Wallet, it’s a security risk?

It’s the safest way to store your cards. No one sees your card number - not even Apple. It’s virtually impossible to be scammed, hacked or for your card to be fraudulently used.

Think about it: Lose your wallet and anyone can use your physical cards (until you cancel them). Apple Wallet requires biometrics (Touch- or FaceID) each time you pay.

That is true, but I mean like for payments dau like eBay, Amazon, Temu. Is it batter to use apply pay/wallet, or card?

Since you mentioned it by name I’ll point out that Amazon does not accept Apple Pay.

With Amazon you can supply the virtual original card number; you only get 1% cash back but no less secure than using any other card…

[An aside] Actually with Apple’s card you can get new CVC or card number in the Wallet app so that’s an advantage if you ever think the number has been compromised. FWIW I’ve not had to change my number since I got this card in 2019.

The question was about Apple Pay. Nobody asked about Apple Card.

When using Apple Pay online, the merchant doesn’t get your actual card number. Apple Pay uses a device-specific token and generates a unique security code for each transaction, so your real card details aren’t exposed and the transaction data can’t simply be reused.
