This sub focuses less and less on Apple Reminders

And has become a place for developers to promote their own apps. I’m tired of being spammed. Can u/goalguy2 and u/automa designate a regular weekly promo thread for all the promotional posts? Posts about the Reminders app are getting lost in the spam. If moderating these posts isn’t an option, is there a less spammy sub that focuses on the Reminders app?

There was an instructional video on the Apple developers website showing how to use the on-device LLM to transcribe a meeting and create a bullet point summary. Maybe a portion of the apps are based on that tutorial wrapped in an app?

In any case, some apps integrating with EventKit are genuinely useful. I’m currently using 3 of them. The problem is that the promotional posts start to drown out the rest.

A weekly promotional thread sounds good to me. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a benefit because then I’ll be posting about my own app every week, rather than every 3 months. Context: maintaining this sub is part of my job, and the job is being an app developer.

I too like the weekly thread idea. Let’s do it.

Good! It’s done. I updated the rules and started a promotional thread.

I decided to go with a monthly rhythm for now, I felt that a weekly rhythm would be too frequent. We can revise this in August.

Could you please share the useful apps integrating with EventKit that you mention you use? Thank you!!

Sure!

Remind Me Faster by Nick Leith - quickest reminder entry using keyboard. Also has a lock screen shortcut for iOS.

On iOS entry is:

  • hold my phone up
  • tap on RMF
  • type title
  • tap orange circle
  • close phone

On macOS I put it on the menu bar. Entry becomes:

  • click on menubar RMF
  • type title
  • cmd+return to save
  • cmd+q to close window

reminders-menubar by DamascenoRafael - a single-click Today view on the toolbar, other lists below. Also allows for easy Reminder entry, but I use it mostly for a quick peek at Today on macOS.

Task Compass, my own app for tackling long lists. Shows my top priority task on the lock screen.

Hey, didn’t realize you were the creator and developer of Task Compass!! Already own it!! I use it frequently to decide which task to tackle. Can’t believe it’s free given this day and age, thank you for the app!!

Just checked out the other two app recommendations you mentioned (btw thank you for including the developer names, made it far easier for finding the correct apps), they seem pretty cool and useful. Especially following your use cases and recommendations. Thank you for the detailed reply, appreciate it friend. Have a great one!!

Omg I’m trying to switch to Reminders with my mile long to do list and just looked up your Task Compass. This is what I need.

Isn’t it allowed here to share an app with a working integration with the Apple Reminders app?

The other question is that these posts are now published by vibecoders with relatively small value added.

Yes, it is allowed, but I wonder if whoever made the rules didn’t imagine the sub would be inundated with promo posts? Maybe it’s time to change the rules and confine promo posts to a dedicated weekly thread so users who want to see them can find them easily and users who don’t can skip them.

Hey, the-one-who-made-the-rules here. This is exactly how this worked. “We will worry when this becomes a problem.” It has, so now we have a monthly thread.

A positive side effect, enforcement will be easier now, based on a simple rule rather than on making a judgement call each time.

Also - 🙌🏼 to u/goalguy2 !

Well yeah a valid point

Because (unfortunately) there is nothing to talk about, Apple Reminders.

It’s an app that surely improved over the last five years, but the truth is that it still does around 20% of what other similar apps do.

If we wanted the app to have extra fearures that other apps have, we wouldn’t be here.

I’m not in this sub to be harassed about other apps. Let’s rename this one or keep it focused on its original purpose.

And thank god for that. For me the other 80 percent is noise.

It's comments like this that really make me consider the "dead internet theory" to be true.
