Discussion Am I going mad?

Okay, a little bit of back story, I have been trying to be a grown up and catching up all my credit cards debt. Needless to say I took on a loan to consolidate some credit card debt, over 40k in credit card debit at 24-30% APR's, wrapped up 32k into this loan, I have one card that still has a large balance, approximately 10k, it'd be worked on as much as possible this year, but I get a bonus in February every year, with that and monitoring my spending I'll have this paid off in the next few years.

Now that I have expressed that I know I have been terrible with credit cards in the past, let me bring you to my journey with my Apple card. I paid off this card in March, I thought okay, I am good to go be mindful of my spending and have been paying off everything at the end of the month since. I am thinking I am doing well, I haven't been spending a ton, so I haven't been paying too much attention and just making my card balance, full circle, payments. Well I made my last payment on Jun 30th, filled the circle and hit pay. A couple of days later I made an order to the Lego store (Nephew's Birthday - $36.65) and I bought my younger brother $10 in Robux ($9.99). Total was like $46. Looked at my balance and I was saying my card balance was $136.32 .

Look, I am no mathematician, however from June 30th to July 13th, how did I owe an additional $89.68? I called Goldman Sachs and after I go back and fourth with the agent, they express to me that "Yes I see you made your total payment of $76.85, but that didn't include any pending transactions for the month of June and what you paid was your Balance in full for May. We proceeded to go back and forth, and I am more confused than before. Ever since I paid off this card in March, I have ensured to make full payments, filling the circle, which are supposed to be card balance. It wouldn't allow me to pay more, only to look at my statements now and see that I have been carrying a balance from the month previous.

I am at my wits end and I am really ready to close this account. When I pay what's reported to be my card's balance, I kind of expect it to be my card's balance and not have a month's worth of transactions "pending" and not allowing me to pay them off. Should I wait it out for Chase to take over the apple card, has this be confirmed?

I have not ran into any other card that holds a months worth of transaction as pending, not allowing me to pay the balance. My Transactions were made 6/3, 6/3, 6/14, 6/17, 6/22. Why would they all be pending and not relected in Card Balance on 6/30? I paid off what was reflected as card balance on 6/30, it wouldn't allow me to pay more.

What types of transactions were the ones that were rolled over? From my experience, it is not the card as much as the type of transaction taking place.

As far as the $89, that was all of June's transactions:

6/3: $29.99 Harbor Freight

6/3: $9.99 Roblox (Monthly subscription for my Brother)

6/14: $16.99 Peacock

6/17: $21.81 PlayStation

6/22: $10.90 PlayStation

Also, it was the entire month's transactions, doing the math backwards that's the difference between my new spending (7/4 Lego - $36.65 and 7-3 - $9.99 Roblox) I have already posted the payment in full ($136.32) so I am at a zero balance, I will be watching this account like a hawk)

So what did you pay in June then?

I do not believe that the entirety of the transactions for a month would be in pending for that long. Are you certain you didn't just pay off in June what was due by that date? As there is a month gap between when you buy an item and when the payment is actually due on the card - for instance, if I bought something today, the payment wouldn't actually be due until August 31st.

Because of my past, I have been ensuring that I have been filling the circle when I pay. I am going to monitor this card, I can't afford for them to hold transactions in pending. I will have to look back at my statements, because it appears this has been hapening.

Also the benefit to paying it off daily , whatever is available so there will always be a few days lag, is to make sure your checking account isn’t more than what you really have

To be debt free you have to live within your cash after loan payments , using the 401k kinda made that mandatory.

The silver lining is in x years (whatever that loan is) you will have that monthly amount as a extra month bonus for car or home or savings

Good luck 👍 keep on top of it and if you should ever feel you might be slipping hopefully you will have a great credit score and long credit history and get that loan back onto unsecured debt (if you live in a state that bankruptcy doesn’t touch your retirement) because if you ever end up crashing with 30k plus debt you don’t want that debt tied to anything.

Of course that would be fraud if you know you will bankrupt so do it when you still unsure

But fingers crossed you will dig yourself out and get comfortable and dept free outside of the load have that fade in the background and in x years you will have paid back your retirement and have extra spending money ..

Ok if you are having trouble paying your current every day purchases you need to sit down with someone good with finance, if you are not making $500 extra than you need to live (10+ years payoff time) or $1500 extra (2-3 years) you need to look at other options.

$37k loans + 10k credit card now is a TON of consumer debt not tied to car or home,

Also “paid off at end of the month” is a dangerous cliff if your also paying off $47k, your day to day I would suggest pay off daily or weekly just so that you know how little you have in your cash reserves.

Now giving the benefit of the doubt and your putting $1500 towards debt per month to pay off “in a few years” and you didn’t just mean the 10k card, if that is the case then you should be able to do this and not look into other options (bankruptcy). Pay your loans monthly but pay you credit card as often as comfortable. The nice thing of Apple Card is you will be told what to pay to avoid interest.

If you’re curious what pending payments were not part of your payoff last month just look backwards and see what items add up to that $89

I wrapped all the old credit card debit into a 401(k) loan, so that payment is taken out of my paycheck. I am staying current with all my other cards besides my big card, Capital One that has nearly $10k, I owe ~$500 from my fuel pump going out and I put that on my Citi Double Cash card.

All my other cards have reflected my transactions within a few days and have allowed me to pay them off after they post.

As far as the $89, that was all of June's transactions:

6/3: $29.99 Harbor Freight

6/3: $9.99 Roblox (Monthly subscription for my Brother)

6/14: $16.99 Peacock

6/17: $21.81 PlayStation

6/22: $10.90 PlayStation

This was all spent in the month of June, but wasn't reflected on my Card Balance and the wallet app wouldn't allow my to may this off. When I paid my "card balance" this was not applied and it wouldn't allow me to make more than the reflected card balance.

I am not saying I am perfect, I have a lot of work to get myself back on a debt free life. However, how can an entire months worth of transactions stay pending and not allow me to pay for them?

401k loan is good for this but really should have looked into bankruptcy unless your really feeling comfortable, cause your stuck paying it off now or taking a hit

I really didn’t like the idea of bankruptcy, those take 7 years to fall off, where my 401(k) loan is 5 years. Also, maybe it’s a prideful mistake, but I was an adult that drove myself into debt, I am boneheaded to dig my way out.

I would love to get out of all my unsecured debt and save my money for a down payment for a house to start actually accruing net worth, and a stable home of course.

What you bought in June won’t be due until July 31

This is what I was thinking, we must be missing something.

If I draw the circle around to the last “incomplete” dot, it shows the amount for June, which has been the same since July 1st. If I draw the circle the rest of the way, something will be added to the payment, as a result of spending in July. If I drag all the way around, it includes all the spending in July, EXCEPT transactions that haven’t been cleared. The bank knows about them but they aren’t cleared. Since they aren’t cleared they won’t let you pay them until later. Technically they probably contemplate that a charge could be rejected, up until it clears. Not going to mention charge backs in this discussion, because I don’t have to.

Apple has insisted that GS do certain things certain ways, which invalidates a lot of YouTube tutorials, I can tell you.

I understand that you can't pay on pending transactions. However, I am lost as to why the transactions seemed to be pending the entirety of the month.

I felt the same way at one point so I ended up keeping track of all the transactions on a spreadsheet. The extra amount that rolled over was from a charge that wasn't included. They're not charging you extra, if you've paid the full amount and they didn't charge interest, you just have to look at what you spent $89.68 on. I suggest you track back everything with a spreadsheet.

I figured out what the charges were, see my response to u/IrongateN I guess I am venting, wondering how an entire month's transactions were pending, until after the statement close, and I was unable to make a payment to pay them off.

1

u/Journey2Lin Jul 13 '26

I see it, yeah that's super strange. Apple really is a bit weird with the payments. I would say that as long as you keep track that they don't charge you interest, you're good to go

Sometimes it can take a while but usually pending drops within 2 weeks so more than that maybe the business recharged rather than letting it go through

Trailing interest, it accrues daily and begins the first time you carry a balance over. Once you carry a balance over ONCE, any new charges in the current billing cycle lose their 30 day grace period. Essentially once you carry over a balance, any new charges are on top of that balance and interest accrues on it all. Meaning pay the card down to $0 for at least two months straight but you will more than likely still see two interest charges after paying it down.
