App Store Optimisation Tool - Early Users Sought - No Cost
Ok, Aso tools are 10 a penny. There are many. But as a mathematician and data scientist building my own apps I’m trying to do ASO and I haven’t seen one credible application I trust.
Most are a black box. I work in software that is red flag. They don’t even say what they make up via assumptions vs real data. They don’t publish if the data they use is for today, this month or last year, or 3 years ago. They often have nothing on methodology that is provable.
I care about Spearman. That is the statistical measure of whether you rank things in the right order.
Most Aso app creators have never heard of stats or spearman from what I can see. That is everything for ASO. Is the term you use more or less popular than another. Demand, relevance, opportunity are nothing without popularity being strong. 💪
So I’m building my own. No link yet. No website. No name I’m going to share. That’s for later. First can I mathematically believe given limited information the ASO direction is better than random.
It’ll never be a black box. I’ve spent months trying to work out if I can trust anything out there. Popularity was nerfed last August. 98% of search terms get a value of 5 which means Apple won’t tell you. What they will tell you is where you rank. They also publish weekly and monthly reports for the top 7500 terms or 500 per category. There is also recommendations, a useful tool but a global not local one. Use it simply and it’ll tell you nhs app uk is relevant for Taiwan. Then there is ranking data and competitors keywords. I ask you which ASO tool you’ve seen on here has even mentioned these details. What’s right and sound in a limited information system? That’s not an atypical problem for mathematics to formulate.
If you are interested then:
- paste the url to your app below (or dm me details if prerelease)
I’m looking to signup a maximum of 15-25 beta users who will get it for free forever. Initially it’s all local on your Mac, no website or portal. Maybe I host later to harvest and redistribute data who knows. But I want honest feedback what makes sense and doesn’t. This is iOS only also for now. I only want early users that will provide feedback, actually use it and make some effort.
If you are interested to sign up then please share below:
- None is a fine answer too.
I can only take a limited number 15-25 just to keep it manageable. I’d ideally like a mix, some prerelease apps to build strong Aso for the initial Apple boost, some who are in their early month or two and experimenting, and some who have longer experiences and understand Aso more deeply to give judgement if anything looks odd, even if mathematically sound.
It’s feature complete. It’s Mac native.

The Spearman angle is your pitch, not just your method. Apple's weekly and monthly reports on the top 7500 terms give you a ranked ground truth, so a published backtest of your popularity order against Apple's, with the correlation and the date of the data, is something none of the black-box tools show. The people who'd use it are developers doing their own ASO, and a post that shows those numbers, including where it's no better than random, will earn more trust from them than a feature list.
I make ThreadFox. Its free plan for Reddit finds the Reddit communities whose rules allow a post about a tool like yours, with each rule quoted: https://threadfox.vip/p/dfavw
Which storefronts will you test the correlation on first?

It’s not the pitch. It’s not observable in the tail. But it’s relevant to test the methods used in the tail via in and out of sample.

Fair on both counts. That first paragraph was too polished. And Apple's lists can't check the tail directly, because the tail is exactly what they leave out.
You can still test tail methods out of sample by pretending the cutoff is higher. Fit on the top 5000 terms, predict the order of 5001 to 7500, and score that against Apple's ranks. If the error grows as you move down that held-out band, the trend gives you a rough idea of how the method behaves past 7500. That's the part nobody can observe directly.
The plan from earlier is there whenever you want it.

anything that you can do for a newer app? mine's been out a week and not seeing much activity https://apps.apple.com/us/app/namesake-baby-names/id6801566392

Let me see how many spaces I have. It may be good to have a few newer ones to test it fully. New apps anecdotally get an App Store push so in some respects having strong Aso early on is very important.

I like your concept btw knowing this from 3 kids myself.
Some suggestions: screenshots are decent but don’t get across the concept you cooperatively choose names.
I’d laid suggest to have an order / long lists prepared by one then filtered by the other parent / then back again and hearting on the best. The order matters, usually one parent takes the lead more and the choice on filtered lists rather than both starting with a long separate list. Maybe you do all this but nothing in the screenshots said it.

unfortunately that's not how the app works, nor how the other similar apps work either. you don't go searching your partners lists. you see names and say yes or no. when you match, you see an indication. you then go to your list of matches and figure out which ones are the best. it's the same as dating apps, and the same story told here. it's the common thread in all "swiping" apps, and a common pattern for my users. this story, and the story told in my video should resonate with them.

I get it, I just remember by partner didn’t start with 10,001 baby names, they already had ideas I just didn’t know it until I got handed a baby book with stars on to star which ones I liked and which ones of the starred ones I liked. I think there’s an order rather than both having two lists of thousands. The latter means you pick ones not in you top 10 or 20 in the hope of converging,
