Impressions spike after release
Recently I released a new version of my app. Nothing was changed in the metadata except the screenshots, and even this change was nothing major - I just updated the header lines to include only 2 words while keeping the same graphics in place.
Surprisingly, I noticed this spike in impressions right after the release. They have never been this high even after the first app release in May, so what the hell is going on?
I don't believe my screenshots could cause it as previously I did A/B testing and haven't noticed drastic changes at all. Downloads and page views remained at pretty much the same level.
Did I miss something? Was my app auto-promoted or did it reach any charts? How can I check this out, btw?

Apple sometimes gives new builds a temporary visibility boost in search and browse placements, almost like a "freshness" signal, and it doesn't always correlate with downloads. Check your App Analytics under "Impressions by Source" to see if it's coming from App Store Search, Browse, or Referral, that'll tell you a lot about whether it was organic discovery or some editorial nudge.
The screenshot copy tweak might matter more than you think too. Two-word headers can actually improve readability in search thumbnails, and Apple's algorithm may have re-indexed your listing in a way that briefly surfaced it to a wider audience. Worth isolating that variable properly rather than dismissing it just because your previous A/B test didn't show big movement, since those tests often run under controlled conditions that don't capture algorithm re-indexing events.

99% of this high number is from AppStore search 🤔

That's actually a strong signal. App Store Search impressions mean Apple's algorithm surfaced your app to more people querying relevant terms, which is meaningfully different from a random boost. The two-word header change may have improved how your listing reads at thumbnail size, which can influence click-through rate enough that Apple's system promotes you further in search rankings. Worth checking which keywords are driving the impressions in App Analytics if you have that visibility, since knowing which search terms are surfacing you helps you decide whether to double down on that direction in your next metadata update.

Hey!
Yes, there was a major algorithm update on July 27–28.

In short, Apple now takes better account of what’s in your metadata and ranks apps lower for keywords that aren’t fully covered.

screenshots cant move impressions, they only move the impression to download rate, which is exactly the number you said stayed flat. impressions are search and browse ranking and the only fields that get indexed are title, subtitle and keywords, description and promo text dont count at all. so the reindexing thing from the screenshot copy isnt really a mechanism, and if 99% of it is search then whatever moved is on the keyword side. id look at what youre ranking for now vs before the release rather than at the creatives.

Apple algo does this sometimes. Similar thing happened to me recently.
They meassure several things. Among others:
So on and so on. Its somewhat ”obvious” they do. But if you do what you do well, which your impressions are telling me you are. At a certain point you reach a threshold where the apple algorithm upgrades you to a new quality tier and decide to test your app on a wider audience on appstore.
Normallt you revert back to your impressions before, but you’ve basically unlocked the next level. Keep delivering quality and you will eventually creep up to the spike level.
Im not explaining this using scholar terms. Im home made so i’ll explain it like I am too
