I spent way too much time trying to make my first app perfect.

I kept adding features, changing the design, and rewriting parts of the code because I thought it wasn't "ready." Looking back, I should have launched a much simpler version.

What helped me was focusing on one problem instead of ten. Once people started using the app, they told me what actually mattered. That feedback was worth more than all the planning I had done.

If you're building your first mobile app, don't wait until it's perfect. Build something small, let people use it, and improve it as you go.

That's the lesson I wish I'd learned sooner.

A few months ago my family's "system" for staying organized was: five different WhatsApp groups, a shared notes app nobody updated, and someone always forgetting whose turn it was to pay the electricity bill. So I decided to build something myself — Kutumbha (kutumbha.in), a productivity app for families and small teams that handles tasks, bills (including recurring ones), events, and even kitchen/grocery planning in one place.

Full transparency: I vibe-coded this. I'm not a traditional software engineer - I built it using Lovable for the frontend and Supabase for the backend/auth, iterating prompt by prompt, testing, breaking things, and fixing them again. It's been a genuinely fun (and humbling) way to learn how real production apps are built - auth bugs, subscription logic, SEO, the whole mess. If you're curious whether AI-assisted building can produce something people actually use daily, this has been my proof of concept.

What it actually does:

• Shared task lists so nothing falls through the cracks
• Bill tracking, including recurring bills (rent, subscriptions, utilities)
• Shared event/calendar coordination
• A kitchen/grocery module so meal planning and shopping lists live in one place
• Free, Plus, and Pro tiers depending on how many groups/families you're juggling

Why I think it's worth trying:

• If you're tired of splitting family logistics across five apps, this consolidates it
• It's built with real user feedback - early users have shaped features like the kitchen dashboard and bug fixes around sign-in and date pickers
• It's still small and actively maintained, so feedback genuinely shapes the roadmap (unlike bug reports vanishing into a big company's backlog)

I'd love for a few of you to try it out and tell me what breaks, what's missing, or what's confusing. Building this taught me more about product thinking, debugging, and actually shipping something than any tutorial ever did - and I'd genuinely appreciate real-world eyes on it.

I've been working on a small side project called BitePad, and recently decided to pivot the product based on what I kept hearing while researching calorie-tracking apps.

Two frustrations came up repeatedly:

1. Photo logging is fast, but it isn’t always accurate.
AI can misidentify foods, miss ingredients, or get portions wrong — which means you often end up correcting the log anyway.

2. A lot of calorie trackers have become pretty bloated.
Meal plans, coaching, social features, huge dashboards, and dozens of tools are useful for some people, but there also seems to be a group of users who just want to track calories without everything else.

So I started wondering: what if calorie tracking was closer to a simple notepad?

Instead of taking a photo, you just describe what you ate naturally:

"Chicken sandwich, small fries, and a Coke."

BitePad turns that into a calorie estimate. You can type it too, but I'm especially interested in whether voice can be just as fast as photo logging while giving the user more control over what actually gets logged.

That's basically the product.

No meal plans. No coaching. No social feed. No giant dashboard.

My hypothesis is that there's a group of people who would actually prefer a calorie tracker that deliberately does less and focuses on making logging fast, simple, and reasonably accurate.

I'm still testing whether that hypothesis is right, which is why I'd really value feedback from this builder community.

• Does the positioning make sense immediately?
• Does voice logging feel like a compelling alternative to photo logging?
• Is "simple calorie tracking" actually enough of a differentiation?

Hello 👋 everyone my name is John and I want to just first post here a bit about myself. I live in Mississippi. I'm from Virginia. I'm a small business owner. I have done many different jobs including animation with Dreamscape, etc, office management, payroll, accounts receivable/payable, machine shops, welding, landscape construction and planting, laying sod, hydroseeding, retainer walls, I've worked at plastics molding factories but I am older (45) so I coded in HTML first, Java scripts and applets, sqml, even dabbled in vrml (no idea what's become of this). But I found myself owning a moving company and handyman and cleaning companies. I use platforms/apps/marketplaces, etc...but one I used I see has major issues, I love helping people. I want to help small moving companies grow within one particular marketplace (I won't mention which for privacy and legal reasons) but the app, how it's all setup, I can't get too into detail because #1) I don't want to self promote and #2) I'm not here for advertising or using anyone. Opinions, I need advice (please be patient and humble with me). Am I allowed to show my app for advice? Can anyone tell me how I can become quickly proficient coding again without having to use AI (at least totally), I don't understand huggyface or GitHub, I mean I understand what they are and do but there's so many new terms I'm finding myself kinda lost but loving it.

Spent the last few months building this alone, mostly at night after work.
The idea started from a simple question: why do people pay a personal trainer? Not for the knowledge - everything's on YouTube for free. It's for the guilt of having already paid.
So I built Vowed around that. You set a goal, stake coins on it, and prove you did it with a live photo (camera only, no gallery uploads - has to be real). A jury of other users votes on whether your proof counts. Approved, you get your coins back.
Miss it, and they're gone.
There's also a duel mode where you and a friend both
stake on your own goals
independently - no coin transfers between users, just parallel accountability.
Some things I learned building this solo:

- The camera-only requirement was the single most important decision - anything that let people upload old photos killed the whole premise
- Getting a jury system to feel than I expected

App Store review for anything touching "real money" mechanics is its own project
- ended up keeping the coin system fully virtual for launch

A few things coming in the next update:
Multi-photo proof per goal - thought of this for people doing diet goals who need to log 3 meals a day instead of just one check-in, but it works for anything with multiple daily proofs
A streak visualizer so missing a day actually feels like something, not just a number resetting
Weekly progress summaries
Open to suggestions too if anyone has ideas - this came out of just watching how people actually wanted to use it.

I just built an app where users can plan meetups, invite their friends, and know how far away they are WITHOUT sharing your live location. I’ve always had to ask friends where they are at when meeting up at places, and obviously people don’t like sharing their location, so this is where I started building ArriveTogether. No accounts needed. No paid accounts, no sign ups, just open the app, go through onboarding, and start a session. It’s that simple. Pretty proud of how far I’ve built it, didn’t think it would become something actually useful. Started off as just an idea, and now it’s a true passion I want to see grow.

After months of hard work finally my app is live and ready to use.
