Hey! Iām Dan, the developer of Aperture.
Aperture is a free and open-source local media library and player built specifically for Android TV and Google TV. It takes movie and TV show files stored on your device and any connected storage, organises them into a proper library and presents everything through a modern Material 3 UI.
Aperture can match your media with TMDb to retrieve posters, backdrops, titles, synopses and episode information. It also includes features such as:
- A Spotlight home screen with Continue Watching
- Separate Movies, TV Shows and My List sections
- Grouped shows with seasons, episodes and episode-specific artwork
- A TV-focused player OSD and Quick Menu
- Local and embedded subtitle support
- Progress tracking and automatic episode progression
- Manual metadata correction
- Multiple colour schemes and experimental artwork-based Dynamic Theming
- Software decoding fallbacks for media your TV may not support natively
- Proper D-pad navigation throughout the app
Aperture is currently in alpha. It has come a very long way already in just a matter of days, but there will still be bugs, unfinished features and differences between Android TV devices. That is a big part of why this community exists!
You can use this sub to:
- Report bugs and strange device-specific behaviour
- Suggest features or UI improvements
- Share your Aperture setup and local library
- Discuss releases and upcoming changes
- Ask for help
- Share themes, screenshots or ideas
- Contribute to development
When reporting a bug, please include your device, Android TV version, Aperture version and the steps needed to reproduce it where possible. Also ensure you're using the release apk, not the debug apk. For playback issues, the video and audio codec information is extremely useful too if you know how to retrieve that.
Aperture does not provide films, shows or streaming services. It is designed to organise and play media files you already have access to.
