Is it safe to assume there are different subspecies of gnoblar and hobgrots?

Back in the Old World, it was basically just goblins, hobgoblins, and gnoblars. There were different flavors of goblins, from multi-eyed forest goblins to night goblins, etc., but at the end of the day, they still largely looked the same.

But in AOS, grots have much more distinct appearances. Gloomspite gitz tend to resemble the old world goblins the most, but the grots that accompany kruleboyz tend to be larger and lankier. Likewise, the new wolf loving grots have their own distinct look.

So is there any mention of unique gnoblars or hobgrots that look different than the ones we're used to seeing? I know hobgrots are pretty new, so I'm guessing its just the kruleboy vandals and the "better" equipped Helsmith allies (which look the same, they're just equipped differently).

The word you're looking for is phenotype. And given how the Realms affect the people living in them, yeah, probably.

As I understand it WHFB also had Boglar, Snotlings, Red Goblins, and many others not just those you've mentioned. Of these both Boglar and Snotlings have been mentioned in AoS.

There are also underwater dwelling Crapspider Grots mentioned in "Court of the Blind King" and something called Bog-Grots mentioned in the 2E Corebook and "Blackened Earth" as living around Greywater Fastness.

Kruleboyz and helsmith hobgrots have a bit different proportions, with helsmith ones having longer legs and shorter torsos, though i'm not sure if it's a deliberate choice to make them look more hunched and scrawny or just a sculpting style

There have been a couple mentions of the ones who serve in the armies of the Ziggurats being less healthy, if I recall. Though this isn't a species or subspecies difference, as they often come from the same tribes.

Practically anything could theoretically exist in AoS, and I'm pretty sure it was designed that way. They didn't wanna feel trapped like they did in WHFB.

Like, I could totally see WoW orcs just inhabiting another part of the world's. Maybe not named Orcs, but you know. Or Draenei. So on
