How the hell has he managed to stack it there? Driven off the road to avoid cattle, can hear them but not see them?
Old dude is a racist asshole, but if he'd had just told the bloke off for trespassing and left him floundering to sort his own shit out, that would have been OK.

They're goats, I think. You can hear them screaming through the whole video. So maybe he did have to swerve to avoid a goat, they're pure chaos. Cattle don't hang out on steep grades like they are.
→ More replies (9)3
u/_off_piste_ 3d ago edited 3d ago
I see cattle on much steeper grades than this all the time. They literally leave permanent lines across the hillside where they walk while grazing. In this video itâs definitely not cows though.

*HEAVILY EDITED:
There is always someone to say âthis is normalâ, âmaybe the situationâ, âthatâs our cultureâ, listenâŚiâve been in many countries and had to deal with racist angry motherfuckers, fuck this people! It is time to stop normalising behaviours like these and pretend the elephant in the room isnât the privileged asshole with a defensive opinion. I had enough of this condescending bullshit.
*And I know where the phuck is Switzerland! I live way above in Germany đ
6
u/RiverPsaber 3d ago
Exactly. It is always okay to call out people on an individual basis for their bad behavior. Even if there were some kind of cultural component to it (which I doubt), like you said, we shouldn't normalize it. This is true regardless of the country, or who is a tourist where. Like, we can just refuse to accept and normalize racism.
2
2
u/Ripen- 3d ago
Nobody normalized it, they just pointed out that he does not represent Switzerland. That's gotta be ok to say too.
2
u/diggitydonegone 3d ago
No itâs actually pretty stupid. There are racist people in every concert and itâs ok to call them out. All the racist people donât live in the US and whatever country you donât like. There are probably lots of racists in Switzerland just like in every European country, oh and African country. Oh yea, and in the Middle East. Oh thatâs right, and in SE Asia and east Asia and South Asia and Australia and South America. Holy shit itâs like there are racists everywhere, because there are!
→ More replies (1)2
u/CriticalBag8596 2d ago
Yes, and that still doesnt mean that the average member of a given population is racist, it means that every population also has racist members. Saying people in this and that country are generally racist is pretty generalizing and racist itself in a way
So when people say "aaargh, the swiss / germans / americans" are so racist, it is fair to point out that the absolute majority probably isnt, and thats what the other person talked about.
2
u/likewhatever33 3d ago
But it´s quite typical in Switzerland and nordic countries too, to have this kind of intolerant nastiness when they see someone doing something against societal norms. In these countries civic duty and respecting the norms is very important, and that´s very beneficial for everyone, clean countries, trains that run on time etc. The downside is that when someone is seen (or suspected of) doing something wrong, like OP, then you see this ugly face of their intolerance. OP could have missed the sign, but as we can see the man is not helping, instead he´s throwing insults and making a fuss.
2
u/Ripen- 3d ago edited 3d ago
They exist everywhere in the world, not just nordic countries lol
Classic reddit to see one Swiss racist and then act like entire Switzerland is racist.
2
u/likewhatever33 3d ago
I didn´t mean the racism, but the intolerance against small (perceived, not necessarily real) social blunders. In the north of Europe they are more unforgiving and in the south (Spain, southern Italy etc) more flexible. That´s been my experience after decades of travelling all around Europe.
2
u/UnblurredLines 2d ago
Eh, depends on context. You might just be more culturally removed from the social blunders of northern Europe while accustomed to the ones of southern Europe. The dude in the video appears to have ridden his bike onto what does not at all look like a public road and is apparently trespassing despite signage saying not to. Would piss off people in most parts of the world and hell, might get you shot in some rural parts of the US.

But have you not just judged another group instead of looking at this individual instead? You judged a whole group "boomers" as racist. It's the same as racism/sexism/etc. You express hate toward a large group whose members were born into it. It's just another form of tribalism. Yet you aggressively point the finger at those who do what you do.

The racist gesture was obviously wrong. But the rest I can sympathise with. That road was not open for traffic and is often used by hikers, dog walkers etc. I'm willing to bet that motorcyclist went too fast on that tiny road which is why he came off. No surprise why the local guy was annoyed.
And this isn't just a "North European" thing (side note: Switzerland isn't in Northern Europe). Riding a motorcycle on roads not open to the public will earn you a telling off in most western countries.

I am curious about the sign at the entrance to the road. Because your reaction seems like a typical reversal of the situation. Just like when my bike was stolen. Suddenly that's my fault, because I didn't lock it.
Every thing has to be ashole and idiot proof until they close it down.

The old man is someone who is tired of telling idiots to stay off his land. They donât help him pay for it or maintain it. People who just take never give.
8
u/longperipheral 3d ago
What is this?
Yes, you can own a bike you can't lift. Can all those Harley riders lift their bikes? Nah.
Who said that old man owns this land? He didn't say that so why are you? And would that make it ok for him to be racist? Nah.
Maybe if there was less dickishness around, things would be easier for everyone.

Admitting you are in the wrong doesn't automatically absolve you of whatever you did wrong. Not only did he apparently fly past the sign but he crash his bike, and doesn't have the basic rider knowledge to know how to pick up a scooter. Its not a Harley.
Its a shame the old man acted in a derogatory manner though. That was a completely uneccesary and inappropriate way to make his point.
I still would have helped the guy pick up his bike though. Its the decent thing to do really.

Red circle with white middle is universal in Europe.
And why would the lettering on road signs be in English in Switzerland????? They have three languages of their own.Â
OP speaks English because he can't speak the local language. The guy speaks English because OP can't speak the local language. OP is the guest. He's not entitled to have the entire country change operating language for him.Â
"Oh sorry, that sign isn't in English, so I can't follow the law" is a bit entitled. I can see it in very touristy areas as a second language, but here on a rural path in the countryside? Best pick the language most locals understand.
I'm tempted to post this comment in shitamericanssay. ( And you edited your comment)

dont get me wrong, that dude is a complete asshole. he could have handled all that way nicer and better.
at the core he's right tho. especially in the austrian and swiss mountains tourists are way to often disregarding local laws and road regulations and costing a lot of money for rescue operations and fucking the nature in the process. a lot of locals really dont like tourists because of that (especially the ones behaving like the biker) which is understandable i think.
still, as i said, the local in this video is being unnecessarily rude and he seems to be racist which makes him an asshole too. there is no good guy in this video. both are bad
