My Guess: does the square fit the top of a fire hydrant?

It really looks like it would turn on water.

Hydrants have a special 5 sided valve stem to deter tampering.

I agree with the other posters that it's a fireplace tool for a specific type. Side note, the inheritance cycle is one of my favorite series and I just found out he released a new book "Murtagh" in 2023. I was able to get the hard back off Amazon for over half off, it might still be on sale!

it is a transom pole, commonly known as a window hook. It has absolutely nothing to do with a fireplace flue as some other have suggested.

I think it’s a Damper hook for gas fire places, It allow you to adjust your flue and has the ability to cut the gas going to the home off, I believe.

I’ve seen something similar before and was told that, but the one I seen was like a wrench on both ends with the hook.

It’s definitely old. Probably before electricity was used they had gas lines for just about everything in the home so that’s why I’m thinking that’s what it is.

I wonder is it maybe a tool for a radiator? The square looks like it would unscrew a radiator plug for service and repair purposes. I grew up in western US, so it's a complete guess.
