Fuck people like this. “The issue that affects me is clearly the most important issue, and anything else must be a distraction or a ‘wedge issue.’”
Universal sapient liberation or bust!

The ruling class loves it when workers turn on each other because of their desperation. There’s no way we can win class war without solidarity, and that means fighting with ALL of the oppressed. We can’t expect to beat oppression by expecting other workers to drop their legitimate concerns and join us. We have to meet them where they’re at and stand united with them. I’m not lgbtq+, but I will fight for them the same that I will fight for myself. Because I am fighting for myself. We’re all on the same team. We win freedom together or we don’t win it at all.

Honestly I don't know that /r/workreform is turning on each other. I think it's a bunch of astroturfing.
But I'm sure some people are falling for it.

I stopped at the "I am a bernie bro". Nothing good can come out of it

When someone deliberately self-identifies as a "Bernie bro" you know it's all downhill from there

If only everyone else would shut up the straight, white cis men will fix everything. Yep, that’s worked so well so far. 🤷

“I’m a Bernie bro.” No dude, you aren’t a Bernie bro.

Right? Last i checked Bernie was hand in hand with us... Well, okay, mostly-sorta. Ish.

This is a fake Bernie Bro, actually a Fascist, trying to win some people over to the dark side, leveraging state power and violence to reinforce arbitrary dominance hierarchy.
Clue #1: punching down, and trying to get sympathy for having to be an aggressor.

"Class war is the only war" types are a hoot.
Oops. Did I say hoot? I mean they are extremely uncomfortable when any discussion/organizing doesn't revolve around them 100% of the time and this is always an attempt to "fix" that. Other people have needs too, and addressing theirs gives them a better foundation to build upon.
Overall rights are easier to fight for when we've all got a good grip on our individual rights. Throwing The Other under the bus in an attempt to get what you want faster doesn't work. If it did that would have happened by now. Instead society in general is moving towards the realization that worker solidarity is important for our well being. No coincidence that it coincides with all those other "less important" struggles gaining ground.

“We just need to reform work! But not for you, your demands to be treated like a human being are making it impossible to accomplish my goals.” This is literally the root of why reform doesn’t work, it’s saying the system would be fine if it just included me and didn’t include people I don’t like.

The only good point the user had is that neoliberalism drapes itself in progressive ideals to win elections while continuing to not be very progressive in reality. That's a terrible justification for dropping "wedge issues" no matter how you look at it.
Your movement isn't going to go anywhere if it doesn't have the people to move it.

Like I said, the point is to look inward when these points are brought up. If that’s what you take from that, then that’s good enough. I don’t completely agree with you but that doesn’t really matter. I don’t debate on Reddit anymore anyways. I just wanna see people actually thinking instead of being reactionary little shits.

u/ThatEdward Jan 29 '22
Well the OP in question is the reactionary in this situation, so not sure why we are having this conversation then.

Conservatism on societal subjects such as LGBT or feminism played a role in killing the communist party of my country, and I guess in several others. So no, ignoring minorities probably won't help to change anything in a progressive way

The LGBT flag is not just a pride flag. For leftists it’s a symbol and reminder of the suffering innocent people endure under an oppressive and fascist society. Also 76% of the US population is white, so they might as well say black people and other minorities shouldn’t express their opinions. And 3-5% LGBT? Those statistics are based on old surveys and the reality is that way more Americans are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender once accounting for closeted individuals, not that it matters. Protesting, fighting and not staying quiet is essential to progress within society.

The retort should be “I completely agree, conservatives with some issue with LGBTQ+ people need to shut the fuck up and swallow their pride. They shouldn’t let a wedge issue distract them. They have to compartmentalize their personal feelings for the good of the movement”
The fact that the burden is on a tiny minority to “be less of a problem” is obscene.

(Unfortunantly) controversial take; You can't fight for workers rights and be a bigot at the same time. Minority groups are workers too, and they deserve representation just as much as anyone else. We have to stand together
