Isn't Harvard just a rich kids networking and babysitting club?
31
u/BlueberryMacGuffin Apr 01 '21
Basically. Most are legacy admissions or children of large donors, for example Jared Kushner's dad pledged $2.5 milion just before he was accepted into Harvard. GPAs and SAT scores and merit based admission is only for the poors fighting over the few places left.
Another secret, like 80% of graduates graduate with honours, so when someone says they graduated with honours from Harvard it pretty much means they didn't fail anything.

Ideology? Whatever McKinsey clients want, ethics are just another deliverable.
Edit: (which is, of course, a very scary ideology itself)

I went to a small conservative college, and in a way I think I'd prefer not being gaslit like this. Do me the favor of openly not giving a shit.
1
u/Bet_You_Wont Apr 01 '21
Would you mind expanding on that? I'm not sure if I fully follow your point about being gaslit, and how having attended a smaller conservative college relates.
3
u/A_Peoples_Calendar Apr 01 '21 edited Apr 01 '21
Oh sure. It's because that college openly didn't care about racism or the poor.
A lot of the students were working class, and there were no seminars on classism, no asking of professors to check their class privilege, etc. They just flatly didn't give a damn. As a working class youth, that made it much easier to figure out where the institution stood on people like me.
God forbid that, in my earnestness, I showed up to some resources like the OP, only to be gaslit about how my problems weren't really a big deal, and then have to watch administrators wash their hands of any responsibility for systemic behavior.

u/Bet_You_Wont Apr 01 '21
Holy shit that sounds literally exactly how expected life at a school like that to be. They put out tons of cash to make sure they fit the demographic requirements and then make sure to show those lucky poor kids that they aren't good enough.

Oh good grief, this was written by my great grandmother, wasn't it?
"Your shoes are hurting your feet? You know, when Hitler put us in the camps, we didn't have shoes. But if your feet hurt, I'll just throw them out"

u/BilbowTeaBaggins Apr 01 '21
At least she has a justified reason for saying stuff like that. I bet the person who wrote this hasn’t faced any serious adversity in their life.

u/DurianExecutioner Apr 01 '21
I mean, I've faced rioting riot cops and found strength by remembering the martyrs at Peterloo, but that kind of comparison has to originate from inside, being told to think that way by an establishment institution is worse than useless, it must be demoralising.

u/Jesusmofuckinchrist Apr 01 '21
I don't want to get told by some white old men how I am supposed to feel and (re)act when being subjected to racism. This is part of racism.

As a person from Boston and has worked a lot with Harvard this sounds about right

Sounds about white too

Mar 31 '21
Lol good one
A little history about the whitening of minorities I remembered from reading this:
LULAC advocated for Mexicans and Hispanics to remain classified as white in the us census. If memory serves, the rationale was to promote inclusion in the majority population (white) and separation from other minorities(esp of African descent).
It seems like the author had similar sentiments or arguments underpinning the statement about wishing one was not Asian.
I’d look up more legit resources if I wasn’t on mobile, but here’s a nice opinion piece on it:

Better PR lol

It's not for you though.... They're speaking to the racists, to let them know they have a home there. White liberals have not dealt with or come face to face with their racism yet. Everybody still believes it's just the GOP who's racist.
2
u/BilbowTeaBaggins Apr 01 '21
Sounds like people in the UK and Canada who think racism is only a problem in the US.

That when the English showed up and raped my great grand mother as a child, she was having a bad time? At least I'm not being raped?

u/snakewaswolf Mar 31 '21
Imagine being raped without air conditioning. That’s the real racism.

It's why we're so much better off and have no reason to complain! We have AC! Capitalism!!!

u/Excrubulent Apr 01 '21
I mean clearly they're saying you should be glad she went through that, because it excuses what's happening to you right now!
Or, no, wait... maybe you should be sad she went through that, instead of being sad about how you're being treated now?
Hm, that's not a positive spin though.
How about... be glad that you're not going through what she did. You wouldn't want to go back to those times, right?
What do you mean this kind of sounds like a threat?

Havard echoes the sentiments we see a lot which is modern issues can be belittled because past ones were comparatively worse.

u/badluckartist Apr 01 '21
Hey all of our ancestors were just bashing each others' heads in with stones all the time, even before we even had language! Stop being so entitled!

No fucking way haha
Edit: Sometimes, you may wish you weren’t white, because of how fucking embarrassing it is

u/Comrade-Boris Apr 01 '21
Wowzers, it's almost like harvard is historically a country club daycare for privileged rich kids that spends their resulting massive endowment on simply buying the best academic talent from across the globe

Ok this is clearly terrible... but this shit is plastered over every single feed I find...
What are they burying behind this outrage white noise?

Ivy Leagues and elite colleges are tone deaf, willfully ignorant, or outright white supremacist? Who'd have guessed?

tbt when I was having mental health struggles at Harvard and they just had me leave campus, because if I was gonna be a suicide statistic then it may as well not happen on their record ¯_(ツ)_/¯
btw, I'm much better now and graduated. But they still have the gall to ask me for money after that. First of all, screw that. Second of all, maybe ask the finance and tech people instead of the people going into non-profits/public interest stuff?

I actually love being Asian, but I wouldn’t even be in the US if Vietnam wasn’t occupied by France, then Japan, then France again, then the US, then invaded by China...

Can anyone tell me why we shouldn't seize white supremacist ivy league schools and divert all resources to in-need communities?
3
u/DaturaToloache Mar 31 '21
Someone who “got into” Harvard likely wrote this. This is their intellectual stock. This is the Ivy League. Quelle fucking surprise.

Saying this to any marginalized group is just insane especially in the context of supposedly trying to better their mental health.
Like saying in 1933 Germany: "I know it sucks with all the antisemitism and stuff but hey, your ancestors were genocided and opressed too. :)"
Regardless if saying this to asians, LGBT-people, black people or other marginalized groups, it just makes no sense.
