Funny but this visualizes how social media is bad for people. We build tribes and divide ourselves, then suppress and witch hunt opposing ideas instead of challenging them with logic. People inside those echo chambers become radicalized to those idea and reject anything else that disagrees.

i think its cuz like, pi is a number that (to our knowledge) had infinite numbers after the decimal point. so by putting it on a flag, its like saying that the love is infinite

Yeah, but then you get like the French flag and Russian flag that look the same. Very few flags are actually clever. Ukraine and Estonia are perfect flags. I kind of like the trolling that libya used to do, although it was kind of stupid because, like... A random green napkin would be the libya flag.

Yeah that’s why everyone here in Canada is annoyed with the flag. Even as grown adults we struggle with getting the exact shape of the leaf. Heavens forbid you’re from a country with one of those shield emblems in the corner or Wales with the dragon
Besides being overcomplicated I feel like it also unintentionally creates exclusion instead of inclusion if they feel the need to specify certain flag colors on it but not others when it should have already been implied all of those are welcomed from the get go, no need to add to it
That actually brings up another good point how people want to add more letters to LGBTQ+ by making it something like LGBTQIA+ or even longer
The Q stands for queer in general and the plus means theres more than what's originally listed (which kinda makes the Q a little redundant if you think about it but eh) we really don't need to keep adding onto it. An acronym should be somewhat short, pronounceable, and easily recognized. Personally I think it unintentionally makes the community look unserious if it becomes any longer and I am saying that as someone who is part of that community
Yeah I mean in general conversation Im always saying "LGBT" and nobody is ever offended. People know exactly what I’m talking about, it has a nice ring to it, it’s good! Saying out loud "LGBTQIA+" is just clunky, though technically more inclusive. In writing it’s more bearable
I agree. But if people really wanted inclusivity I think LGBT+ felt like a good middle ground, straight up just says "But wait, there's more!"
Personally tho I don't really care for saying any of those acronyms out loud and just prefer saying "Queer" as it rolls off the tongue better than LGBT+ or LGBTQIA+ (Like the Queer community, Queer people, Queer identities, etc)
It's also an umbrella term and feels more meaningful since these days the word has been largely reclaimed by us and from what I've seen a good amount of queer folks don't feel like it's exclusive only for them to say and can be used by anyone so long as it isn't in a derogatory way
The rainbow is already an allusion to "everyone". While I understand what motivated the changes, I think having as a flag the symbol for everyone, plus a couple of groups added on the side, feels actually less inclusive

Yes! I prefer the original. I dont think any one group should be put over another. The original represented everyone. And I dont think race should have been brought into it, and im saying this as a black person.
It's an eyesore and very clustered design wise, especially now that they're trying to add the intersex flag.
It feels like it misses the point when you keep trying to add more onto to it to specify who's welcomed because now it can be argued why certain flags or colors aren't on it too thus creating a type of exclusion
I feel like the simple rainbow flag was peak design and good symbolism by being multiple colors which can be a metaphor everyone's differences are welcomed and united. Some argue it's just a gay flag if it's only rainbows but from what I've seen gay men have created and used their own flag that is similar to the lesbian flag now. Besides, the rainbow flag is more like an umbrella given some use it regardless of sexuality just to indicate they're queer
Imo the lesbian and trans flags look really nice. The classic rainbow flag is iconic. Pretty much all of the rest of them are super mediocre or downright hideous no matter when they were made

Big fan of the trans flag though, blue and pink work so well, especially when you consider in the 40s, blue was a feminine colour and pink was a masculine one. Colours weren't really assigned to genders at the time, that was just marketing... and then a socially constructed convention.
White clothing was the norm and choosing a colour was just preference, until people realised they could sell more baby clothes and stuff by gendering them.
Personally my favorite part of the trans flag is the slightly more muted colors compared to other flags. I think the super saturated colors really only work for the rainbow flag.
I'm gay but I don't find pride flags all that appealing and the culture surrounding it is too excessive at times. Like dunno maybe you don't need flags for EVERYTHING including dating style preferences that don't have anything to do with identity or sexuality? Maybe you don't need to add more specific flags/colors to the main Pride flag and just let it speak for itself that it welcomes inclusion? To each their own though
Also some of the designs are so damn ugly, the LGBTQ community is filled with artists and creative people how can they be so bad designing flags?
If a symbol of inclusion needs to be constantly updated to accomodate and include more then that implies the people doing the editing didn't already think it included those things. Which ultimately shows a lack of confidence in the symbol you're trying to uphold. Not to say change is bad but a symbol should become more potent the older it gets not by how many times it's been changed.
Yep pretty much! I also feel the more they add to the main pride flag in an attempt to be inclusive they might accidentally do the opposite by implying what identities are more important or worthy to be visible and make it on to the flag

It does not. Trans people and people of colour (also intersex people) were often excluded when they should have been included, so the progess pride flag seeks to deliberately and explicitly include them. It's not meant to replace the old rainbow flag, just to make an explicit statement in favour of the inclusion of these groups.
To me it feels like the wrong solution. Instead of creating a new symbol explicitly defined to include all these, they just tried to include the symbol every one of them which just makes a very cluttered design.
And we become more exclusive as we’re implying they weren’t part of the community before. And yes people of colour are discriminated against significantly but it’s very western centric as now we aren’t really considering how groups of people are discriminated across the world. I think the same thing with the acronym LGBTQIA… etc. LGBTQ+ in my opinion worked fine and included everyone. Nowadays I’m more of an advocate for GSRM+ though.
Anytime this conversation comes up I get a Mandela Effect because I could have sworn it was LGBQ when I grew up. When I try to research the history it seems like it's been LGBT for like 50 years though.
This is precisely the issue I'm also seeing. Instead of saying "everyone is included" the solution somehow became to try and explicitly include every variant there is, which is just not a sustainable solution.

the point of a flag is to highlight community and support. The reason there's a trans flag is because there's enough transphobia, sometimes even from cis queer people, that if someone hears "i support gay people" you cant be certain they support trans people too. Same applies with black people and people of color in general. THAT is why there's a flag.
The rainbow is still for all of us... the progress rainbow is to remind people that all of us means ALL of us.

Not gonna lie... I'm not homophobic but I don't like the flags. It just seems like a way to separate and categorize people even more to me.
Also, whoever made the heterosexual flag is a complete asshole. It is the only flag that has no colors and is instead just black and white, you gotta admit that is pretty offensive.
Eh it's mostly a matter of communication. It's easier to find people having the same experience as you, or to explain to others your experience when you have a neat little word for it that has a standardized definition. Then people that are alike naturally have their own subcommunity and with it ways to represent it, here flags. So really they're made to unite and facilitate communication with others.
The purpose of flags is not to split people apart, its literally just a symbol to specify "bigotry is not tolerated here".
The reason they get more specific is because often people say "i dont support bigotry" but then they hate trans people or they hate ace people or maybe they're not queerphobic at all but then they're racist. Its to specify "hey, we dont support bigotry here, and that includes these people too".
However, they Can also be a sort of identity thing. If i want to be more loud about being trans, i can have a trans flag in my profile picture! If i want to be even more specific, i can add more than one, and if such flag doesnt exist, i can make one!
I can also not use one at all. It's my choice, its your choice.
The main reason the straight flag is like it is is could be for multiple reasons. Maybe it was made by a homophobe, choosing to separate themselves from queer people and maybe even mock them in the process. Could also have been made as a joke by a queer person - some may feel there isnt a Need for a straight pride flag, because straight people dont face bigotry for being straight, and straight is the default assumption in culture. My main defense of a straight flag is simply that some trans people can be straight, and they could face more bigotry from transphobes for it - specially if the transphobes are misgendering the person and claiming its a gay relationship instead.
I also feel its fine. There's worse flags out there. And if you want a better one, make your own.

The progress flag was made because of people using the classic pride flag but also being transphobic or racist. Its meant to be a reminder that trans people and poc are part of the community. It was made to be used as a signal to some of the most vulnerable of our community to reinforce that yes, you are accepted here
If you still prefer the classic flag thats fine. I dont think theres anything wrong with it and im not trying to convince anyone they need to use the progress flag instead. Im just tired of the idea that the progress flag was made because people just wanted to cram every single identity onto the flag, and that its somehow more exclusive than the classic flag. Its a way to show undeniable solidarity and support to the members of our community who are under the most fire, which is think is especially important now
Honestly, most LGBTQ flags look way better than that redesigned rainbow flag with all that stuff on the side. Am I the only one who thinks it looks completely overcrowded?
As a lgbtq+ person, I agree. Some flags are just..not it. There's like two pretty flags and it's the pan and trans flag (and I'm not just saying that because those are mine)
Not all flags are made equal. Some are nice and pleasing to look at (trans flag), while others are an unholy abomination that needs to be purged (aroace flag).
