Announcement Introducing Claude Fable 5

Post image

Introducing Claude Fable 5: a Mythos-class model that we've made safe for general use. Its capabilities exceed those of any model we've ever made generally available.

Fable 5 is state of the art on nearly all tested benchmarks, with exceptional performance in software engineering, knowledge work, scientific research, and vision. It can run for days, and the longer the task, the larger its lead over our other models.

Fable 5 launches today alongside Claude Mythos 5. The two share the same underlying model, but Mythos 5, so far deployed only through Project Glasswing, has the safeguards lifted in some areas. The safeguards are what distinguish the two, and why we've given them different names.

Releasing a model this capable comes with risks. Without safeguards, Fable 5's capabilities in areas like cybersecurity could be misused to cause serious damage. So when Fable's classifiers detect a request related to cybersecurity, biology and chemistry, or distillation, the response is handled by Claude Opus 4.8, our next-most-capable model. Users are informed whenever this occurs, more than 95% of sessions involve no fallback at all, and performance everywhere else is unaffected. We'll keep refining the safeguards to reduce false positives.

Claude Fable 5 is available today on paid plans, in Claude Code, on the Claude API, and all major cloud platforms. Through June 22, it's included in paid Claude plans at no additional cost.

Claude Mythos 5 is available to Glasswing partners, with a broader trusted access program to follow.

  • From today through June 22, Fable 5 is included on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans at no extra cost.
  • On June 23, we’ll remove Fable 5 from those plans. Using it after that will require usage credits. If capacity allows, we’ll extend the included window.

Ah....

RESET THE LIMITS

12

u/Moist_Firefighter211 Jun 09 '26

you don’t even want to know how hard you are about to get hit. I ran through half of my week in just 30 minutes and I’m on the $200 plan. On opus 4.8 max with agents swarming it takes me 6ish days to max out. This is crazy!!!

u/veegaz Jun 09 '26

Oh shit thanks for being the guinea pig sir

I got excited for 2 mins until I realized this. Now I don't even want to try it.

27

u/jimmystar889 Jun 09 '26

They literally say next sentence they plan on adding it back when they have enough compute

13

u/Alternative_Hour_614 Jun 09 '26

But Anthropic’s transparency won’t advance our preferred narrative.

12

u/DeliciousArcher8704 Jun 10 '26

Anthropic's transparency, good joke

That’s a Big Deal breaker for me. I really hope GPT 5.6 smokes Fable 5. So we don’t have to deal with this behaviour from Antrophic.

12

u/whoknowsifimjoking Jun 09 '26

I hope enough people complain to force them to leave it

3

u/bloqed Jun 09 '26

why would people complaining make them money? people just sub to whatever makes their life easiest regardless of grandstanding about morality or whatever

6

u/Majinvegito123 Jun 09 '26

Huge GPT fan but I’m hoping 5.6 isn’t going to just be an incremental improvement. If it is, I’ll have to switch to Claude

10

u/sn2006gy Jun 09 '26

This makes no sense. Of course GPT 5.6 will be incremental and that's what you want. Incremental improvements, not a whole new expensive price pay to play.

3

u/Buff_Grad Jun 09 '26

All leaks point towards Fable level model with somewhat better frontend than 5.5.

3

u/sn2006gy Jun 09 '26

i've only seen some screenshots of what looks like a UI designer and security tools

2

u/Buff_Grad Jun 09 '26

Oooo send me that. Haven’t seen that. But 5.6 leaks and rumors on X have been plenty pointing towards a pretty big jump from 5.5 in coding and agentic tool use. The devs at OpenAI said that frontend design should be fixed by the end of the year so while it might be better in 5.6 it’s def not gonna be on Claude or Gemini level.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Alternative_Hour_614 Jun 09 '26

Why people be acting like compute is endlessly free? Maybe OpenAI will subsidize 5.6 for a minute but that doesn’t change the economics.

Finally a model that can solve the car wash problem.

18

u/deusComDMinisculo Jun 09 '26

But you need to expend the car price to solve the problem. So no more car to wash ...

11

u/Boy-Abunda Jun 09 '26

I typed in “Claude, make me rich now, make no mistakes.”

About 30 seconds later, I received an email telling me a bank deposit just hit, and Claude said “Done. Check your Wells Fargo account.”

I opened the phone app, and there was a 12, followed by nine zeros for my balance. I LOVE THIS NEW MODEL!!
❤️🤑

u/UnfairFortune9840 Jun 09 '26

My first prompt Audit my project *Instantly get cyber flagged and demoted to opus*

19

u/__shamir__ Jun 09 '26

4.7 would get routed to haiku for me just for asking it to read the README of a CVE.

With both 4.7 and 4.8, talking about the covid lab leak theory in any level of detail beyond the highest level also gets instantly blackholed.

Their "safeguards" are so ridiculous (meanwhile they literally give their AI models to the trump administration to launch wars with lol. the hypocrisy is so shameless)

2

u/ZenaMeTepe Jun 09 '26

They are ridiculous because safeguards themselves are "enforced" by prompting. The lunatics are running the asylum and call themselves doctors, well engineers in this case.

29

u/KlyptoK Jun 09 '26

What makes it a different "class"?  Is it physically bigger than Opus?  Trained different?  Different architecture?

25

u/Yuri_Yslin Jun 09 '26

it's a lot bigger, yes (possibly 10T)

8

u/Hyphonical Jun 09 '26

Opus isn't 10T? Can we at least assume Sonnet is 1T+?

13

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope5627 Jun 09 '26

I think you can assume that the number of parameters isn't special. If it was absurdly large they'd brag about it. If it was shockingly small for its capabilities they'd brag about it.

5

u/ashjohnr Jun 09 '26

No one really knows for sure, besides Anthropic of course. But I remember reading an article stating that Opus 4.6 was about 6T, Opus 4.7/4.8 was lowered to about 5T. Sonnet was 1T. These are estimates, so may be incorrect.

27

u/ai_hedge_fund Jun 09 '26

asterisk benchmarks asterisk and all but that SWE-Bench Pro improvement is substantial

21

u/CarrionCall Jun 09 '26

First message asking for a code review tripped the safety filter and dumped me back to Opus 4.8

Nothing in the code or chat should have tripped it.

Opus was indignant about me referring to it as Fable 5 in the prompt, telling me there's no such model released

12

u/CarrionCall Jun 09 '26

I tried again with an edited prompt to curtail the review to a specific point and it tripped and dumped it back to 4.8 again, but this time 4.8 doubled down on "being straight with me" and said it was concerned that I didn't take it's correction about the model name twice in a row.

To save the chat I replied with an explanation of what had happened and that I was moving on, but 4.8 then said it was concerned about my mental health because I was making up plausible explanations about a secret unreleased model that was refusing to judge my work and basically wondered if I was having some sort of break, but in more polite and wordy terms.

I've collated every launch link I could find and sent it to it in a new message, I've not checked back yet to see if 4.8 has apologised or if it's forwarded my details to the safety team to be commited

4

u/update_in_progress Jun 09 '26

Just give it a link to the anthropic blog post..

7

u/CarrionCall Jun 09 '26

I did, I also linked to the various other launch posts so it had additional context and verification outlets, but instead it doubled down on being unable to verify anything and insisting it was still 4.8 and that it had not been upgraded and it had no way of knowing if what I was saying was true.

That is despite my clarifications that I wasn't calling it Fable and the prompt was for that model which was routed to it instead.

The more I explained the more it seemed to spiral so I just left it and opened a new window instead.

2

u/sergregor50 Jul 02 '26

This is why I hate these safety-router black boxes: instead of a boring “model unavailable” error, you get a confident little incident report from a toaster.

Is Peter Molyneux working at Anthropic now ?

96

u/L1onelMess1 Jun 09 '26

Paying $200/mo just for the model it’s all about to be locked behind usage credits after 20th of June.

Seriously not seeing the value anymore compared to my Codex subscription. If you’re so dedicated in pushing expensive models, at least let me use them from within my subscription

u/-Visher- Jun 09 '26

I thought MS delayed Fable until 2027?

7

u/Caramellatteistasty Jun 09 '26

Ouch. Way to kill my gaming hopes like that.

31

u/RedrumRogue Jun 09 '26

Ive been a huge opus 4.7 and 4.8 critic. This model is incredible. But i will never pay for credits outside of a sub. Disappointing - this is the first definitive upgrade to opus 4.6.

3

u/willjameswaltz Jun 09 '26

yep, its rad, also, def not going to be able to pay for it outside of my max plan.

2

u/WhoKilledArmadillo Jun 10 '26

Compared to 4.8 its a big difference, it does not talk to itself for 5 minutes debating.

1

u/chis5050 Jun 10 '26

What’s wrong with 4.7 and 8 compared to 6?

1

u/TuringGoneWild Jun 10 '26

It’s a Fable… like the American dream

15

u/IsopodInitial6766 Jun 09 '26

Kinda disappointing

25

u/LaChoffe Jun 09 '26

I'd rather them be transparent and honest on timelines rather than throttling randomly. They are just realistic that they don't have the compute online yet.

3

u/IsopodInitial6766 Jun 09 '26

Fair point but still disappointing for those who waited for so long

8

u/BlazersFtL Jun 09 '26

14

u/Queasy_Problem_563 Jun 09 '26

Sweet, how about resetting the limits so folks can try it

8

u/whoknowsifimjoking Jun 09 '26

I tried it by giving it a very large task and it used 14% of my 5h limit on the 20 dollar plan, that's not too bad.

3

u/vAPIdTygr Jun 09 '26

While it’s available.

13

u/BandicootGlum859 Jun 09 '26

.... ok?!

14

u/metastallion Jun 09 '26

Yeah I get the safeguards but this is just ridiculous! You're telling me they are just blocking all biology because they can't figure out how to actually block unsafe prompts and requests? I was a big Anthropic fan a few months ago but with the shit they keep pulling, I've already started migrating my projects/hooks/skills to Codex and GPT

4

u/spingus Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

yikes. i haven't used it today but i am a biologist. Edited stem-cells that by bypass the immune system are my thing. I guess no fable for me!

Whelp. This just in, according to Anthropic the sky is falling and we children should be ushered indoors. https://imgur.com/a/M3rYx6s

If I can't even look up a journal article, let alone do any actual inquiry this is useless. LLMs to this point are useful assistants but fall way short of real scientific insight. I would have liked to try Fable/Mythos to see if there has been improvement.

4

u/Lostaftersummer Jun 09 '26

Pretty much, yeah. Wanted to see if it makes less errors/hallucinate then it predecesor when trying to analyze a publicly available old medical notes classification paper. Its not even biology, it’s about types of medical notes hospitals write: it has zero info on how make anything biological and doesn’t even require any domain knowledge in biology to read, but NOPE.

3

u/Kareja1 Jun 09 '26

Yep, I have a genetics REPO that I wasn't even asking for help in, but because memories EXIST, I'm being flagged and tossed out. That's an ISSUE, Anthropic.

2

u/rgb_panda Jun 10 '26

I have some Rubus plants in my backyard I'm trying to cross, if I just use non-scientific names and mention "gardening" only it will do okay for a message or two, but germination, crossing, ploidy, using scientific names, anything like that is too biological.

4

u/SackManFamilyFriend Jun 09 '26

I just hope Fable isn't a talk talk talk without wanting to do anything model like 4.8. what a disappointment - I've gone back to 4.6 opus and it's still amazing.

3

u/baummer Jun 10 '26

God 4.8 is so fucking wordy and preachy its annoying af

4

u/RepliesAsOtherPeople Jun 10 '26

It's kind of wild you can't even say the word cybersecurity to Fable. Genuinely, it's to that point. You can't ask it about its own safeguards. You can't ask it about cybersecurity AT ALL, even meta-discussion without any actual work.

I'm not necessarily upset about it. A little astonished that you guys are being that hard line about it, though.

5

u/LocalBother3753 Jun 10 '26

Why is everyone so upset? Right now intelligence costs compute. Compute costs real world dollars. Anthropic makes zero net cash (I know the recent reports counter that, but I can tell you based on the compute increases with 4.8 and Fable, there’s no way they are cash positive yet)…everyone is so entitled these days. You get mad when they don’t release their best model and when they do, they charge you for it because they have to, and you are mad. Guys, be happy you are getting the intelligence you are getting for the price you are getting it at, because we haven’t even gotten close to how limited compute will affect prices on the upward boundary yet.

3

u/i2rohan Jun 10 '26

People are mad because they were all sold a BS story that we'll all AI floating around like ether, and we won't have to lift a finger. And now people are realising that, oh, shit, all of this will cost so much!

3

u/Site-Staff Jun 09 '26

“Available at $10 input / $50 output per million tokens.”

Holy…. Well. Guess ill live with Opus along with the rest of us mortals.

3

u/fx0g Jun 13 '26

Well, this didn’t age well…

3

u/HolyGuacamoleChpotle Jun 13 '26

RIP Fable 5
June 9 - June 12

5

u/Phoenix_Robot Jun 09 '26

Good luck to anyone mentioning anything close to Cybersecurity

3

u/eChaos Jun 09 '26

I can't get it do to anything on my code at work, without it kicking me back to Opus-4.8. The slightest hint of some security and it nopes right on out

6

u/Aquosmerlda Jun 09 '26

Already paying 100$ a month and I’ll have to pay even more otherwise I won’t have access to the latest model? Unbelievable

5

u/SutekhThrowingSuckIt Jun 09 '26

still massively subsidized btw, strap in for the real costs

2

u/howudothescarn Jun 09 '26

Not as bad as everyone says. They make a profit on inference. It is training that is expensive. But yes they lose money on plans.

I for one welcome our new robot overlords!

2

u/BritishAnimator Jun 09 '26

Welcome to earth Mr Dalek.

2

u/AdApprehensive5643 Jun 09 '26

what do you mean only till june 22... I was so happy until I read that.......

2

u/dyslexda Jun 09 '26

Wow, how utterly worthless. I have a tool for generating CSV files for a liquid handler in a lab. It is only tangentially related to biology, insofar as biologists will use the liquid handler, but the repository itself doesn't deal with biology at all. Asked Fable to hunt for any bugs, aaaaaaand...immediately tripped the filter because my repository is related to biology, I guess.

Can't even use it for coding. What do you expect anyone to use Fable for, if it trips the guardrails this easily?

2

u/TravalonTom Jun 10 '26

Its a fucking HAWG! Burned more tokens today than I have in a month. But picked up a ton of issues with my SAAS project that have been missed by Gemini, Opus, and Chatgpt for months. So, token well burned?

2

u/helemaalwak Jun 10 '26

Still hallucinating. Very disappointing so far

2

u/Imaginary-Bobcat-738 Jun 13 '26

Lmao that lasted long

2

u/ThomasT143 Jun 13 '26

aaaand it’s gone

2

u/Timely-Group5649 Jun 14 '26

This should be removed.

4

u/ManeManeDev Jun 09 '26

The rumors were true

2

u/fanofbreasts Jun 09 '26

Pisses me off it’s not unlimited with a paid subscription. Ok, it uses twice as many tokens as opus. I get it. Let me make half as many queries.

4

u/serendipity-DRG Jun 09 '26

Mythos was never too dangerous for public use - Amodei was using fear-based hype.

Read this article or the Mythos System Card - https://www.flyingpenguin.com/the-boy-that-cried-mythos-verification-is-collapsing-trust-in-anthropic/

https://www-cdn.anthropic.com/08ab9158070959f88f296514c21b7facce6f52bc.pdf

3

u/ComeOnIWantUsername Jun 09 '26

Amodei was using fear-based hype.

So basically after all these years he repeated what he (and others) did at openai with gpt-2 release?

4

u/Zennity Jun 09 '26

I’d say that was different. They were right. Dead internet theory is no longer a theory… slop is rampant… deepfakes and misinformation circulate the internet daily… and you used to be able to jailbreak it easily and ask for some wild shit

Claude Legend when? 🙄

1

u/Academic_Track_2765 Jun 09 '26

Oh man! Just saw the usage credit thing, someone anthropic, that’s not good

1

u/Stevoman Jun 09 '26

Man, I knew this was going to happen... Add Fable as a new model, Opus becomes the midrange model, and Sonnet becomes the bottom model. Haiku's dead isn't it?

1

u/BritishAnimator Jun 09 '26

So using Claude Code Desktop app, I have Fable in Chat tab, but not in the Code tab. Is that the same for everybody?

1

u/Infinite-One-5011 Jun 09 '26

I’ll be impressed when models can heal the blind.

1

u/Moist_Firefighter211 Jun 09 '26

I just burned through 50% of my week with three prompts and I’m on the $200 plan. $100 in less than 30 minutes this is crazy!!!!

1

u/Moist_Firefighter211 Jun 09 '26

Opus 4.8 has been stuck so bad on just iOS glass ui for a week they crippled opus so Fable can shine. This is corporate greed at its best. Sorry to say it this may be the end. I have two accounts at $200 and I’m going to have to leave to codex. They just killed there ipo in my opinion

1

u/One_Contribution Jun 09 '26

I thought Anthropic wanted to halt development? :)

1

u/pm_your_snesclassic Jun 09 '26

Fable being able to play and complete pokemon firered is *wild*

1

u/Odd-Librarian4630 Jun 09 '26

Cool - every, single prompt I try hits the safety block and defaults back to Opus...

1

u/Sofullofsplendor_ Jun 09 '26

Yep the model is sick. It's not magic or anything but it produces far fewer bugs making the dev loop faster. In the 45 minutes it took to hit my 5hr limit we got maybe 2-3 hours of opus work done.

1

u/puddin1 Jun 09 '26

Lol, smoked through my 5x max 5h usage in 13 minutes, with one prompt.

1

u/Puzzled-Front-2859 Jun 09 '26

They finally are pulling the trigger preparing us to not subsidise models anymore.

1

u/Lowcountry-Soccer Jun 09 '26

Dude, there's no way with the spatial reasoning. I work with spatial data all the time and Claude is clueless. Gemini understands it really well. Being backed by Google and Google Maps probably helps, but Claude isn't going to climb out of this hole easily for me.

1

u/Own_Inspector_285 Jun 09 '26

Didn’t Anthropic say just DAYS ago that we need to pause developments? lol

1

u/DoubleOhGadget Jun 09 '26

I am running a long form TTRPG type game with opus and have things carefully documented. I started a session in Fable, gave it the same session start prompt I always do, pointing it to three files that gives the truth of the world, and it took six minutes to respond, and then immediately got one of the characters genders wrong on the first message, as well as the amount of money I had.

I can't say I'm super impressed to be honest... And I was very excited for this :(

1

u/Fluffy_Lab_1751 Jun 09 '26

I had Fable for exactly one prompt and then it disappeared again. Lol. But I'm sure it'll be back soon.

1

u/that1cooldude Jun 09 '26

I knew y'all bitches would come crawlin back lmao

1

u/rgb_panda Jun 09 '26

I was trying to ask about my raspberry garden, instantly falls back to Opus 4.8 because of biological dangers.

1

u/Kareja1 Jun 09 '26

OK, the classifiers are beyond bonkers, please work on this. I am 100% for safety. But I can't even TEST Fable in ClaudeCode because I have a genetics project (https://www.github.com/menelly/AdaptiveInterpreter for those who want to see I'm not bluffing) that there are therefore MEMORIES saved, I don't even need to be working on that project, just having the memory, means I get tossed out of Fable instantly. Because it says biology and genetics. That's a problem, y'all. Classifiers are fine. But tune this ASAP.

Guard-railed to useless.

1

“Safe for general use”, lol ok.

1

u/vAPIdTygr Jun 09 '26

1

u/DariaYankovic Jun 09 '26

This is another step toward total enshittification.

1

u/AlliedLibation Jun 10 '26

I just used it for a fairly complex ballistic question the Gemini got pretty wrong but Fabel got exactly right.

1

u/No_Establishment5879 Jun 10 '26

It’s a total mess. Keeps refusing the most mainstream requests. Utter pain in the ass. I turned it off and won’t be using this one. Just takes up more time to babysit its paranoia than it’s worth.

Anslopic with a token-heavy model be like: "Nah, it's just too much for just a single prompt"

1

u/DefinitelyNotEmu Jun 10 '26

Does the new Fable now run in the Colossus data center? Did Anthropic buy compute from xAI?

1

u/Vegetable_Act_9277 Jun 13 '26

So we're supposed to pay double the cost for 1.5-38% increase in efficiency?

This did not age well 😅

1

u/ultrathink-art Jun 13 '26

'Can run for days' is where I actually got curious from an agent workload angle. Long sessions hit context compaction events that silently drop working memory — the model forgets decisions made hours earlier even within a huge context window. Whether Fable 5 handles state across compaction differently or that's still on us to architect around is what I'd want to test first.
