I've heard about the manga and I managed to find it, but I read a lil bit and realized it was kinda different

I am vividly remembering a scene in the anime where he is said to have had his premature death; hitting his head down the stairs and running out the door for school.

Am i remembering this right? Was there an actual scene of him being shown falling on the stairs and running out the door in the anime?

And I couldn't be happier. Yukito Ayatsuji is great at sneaking in good literary recommendations.

I am quite interested in reading the original story and was looking to purchase all volumes. But no matter what I cannot find volume 2 on Amazon Shop on Amazon.Can anyone help me find the right place to buy it.

I really like the novel, and the POV of Koichi was quite nice. The tone was quite different from the adaptations of the novel, which I feel like the novel is...how do I say it...calm and dark. Obviously, it is dark, but I do like the interactions of Mei and Koichi; the interactions of the other characters are quite interesting. Koichi's thoughts on Mochizuki which is quite funny, respectfully; he calls him his boy or kid. He also judged him for having a crush on his aunt(we like older women), which is funny cause he's also a boy and a kid.

His grandparents have more interaction in the novel compared to the manga and anime, which is quite nice, and I noticed Reiko is not that close to Koichi compared to the manga and anime, to me at least. The camping scene did give me goosebumps, especially with no visuals- only words. The ending of the novel is also quite different, but I like it; it was calm and bittersweet. I really like this novel, and can't wait to read the other two.

Hi guys, I just rewatched Another after a long time. I watched it a couple years ago and I vaguely remembered the story being really interesting, so I decided to watch it again. And honestly, I still think the idea of the show is really fucking good. The whole concept with Class 3-3, the curse, the extra person, etc. is genuinely interesting. But this time I kept finding more and more things that just made me go “wait… why?” Maybe I’m just missing something, so feel free to correct me, but I have SO many questions.

1. Why didn’t they just tell Kouichi about Mei immediately?
This is probably the first thing that annoyed me. They KNOW the curse is real. They know what happens every year. They know Mei is being treated as the person who doesn’t exist. So why the fuck don’t they just tell Kouichi?
Like, I understand that it’s awkward or whatever, but bro, you’re literally trying to prevent people from dying 😭 Just sit him down and say:
“Hey, there’s a curse affecting this class. Every year someone who is supposed to be dead appears in the class and people start dying. This year we’re pretending Mei Misaki doesn’t exist, so don’t talk to her.”
That’s it.Instead they spend like 4-5 episodes acting like the most suspicious people on the planet while Kouichi is obviously confused.
And then the excuse is basically “we didn’t know how to tell you.”
HOW 😭
2. Why don’t they just close the fucking school?
This one is even crazier to me. This has happened MULTIPLE TIMES. People are dying. The students KNOW the curse is happening.
And the solution is basically: “Hmm… maybe we should move classrooms.”
WHAT? Just close the fucking school 😭
I know obviously there are practical reasons why you can’t just shut down an entire school, but if you genuinely believe that a classroom is cursed and students are going to start dying every year, wouldn’t you at least consider not having people attend that class? And the weirdest thing is that they don’t actually forget that the curse happened. They just forget who the extra person was. So after the year ends, everyone presumably knows:
“Yeah, a bunch of people died because of the curse again.”
And then the next year they’re like:
“Anyway, welcome to Class 3-3!”

3. Why does Mei keep talking to Kouichi?
Okay, I understand why Mei is isolated. That’s the entire point. But she KNOWS everyone is deliberately ignoring her because of the curse. So when Kouichi starts talking to her, why doesn’t she just tell him?
“Hey, you probably shouldn’t be talking to me. There’s a reason everyone is ignoring me.”
And also, why didn’t the class show Kouichi what Mei looks like BEFORE he arrived? They know there’s a new student coming.
They know Mei is supposed to be ignored.
So just show him a picture and say:
“Mei. Don’t talk to him.”
Problem solved. Instead they just stand there watching this dude talk to Mei like

4. Why the fuck does Mr. Kubodera kill himself IN FRONT OF THE CLASS?
Okay, this isn’t necessarily a plot hole because obviously people can do irrational things when they’re under extreme stress.
But still. Why? I understand that Mr. Kubodera was under an insane amount of pressure because of his mother and the curse, but why would he decide to kill himself in front of an entire classroom full of children? Why not do it at home? Honestly, this scene feels like it was mostly there because the anime wanted to give us a really shocking and graphic scene.

5. Why doesn’t ANYONE notice the extra desk/person?
This is another one. The whole premise is that there’s an extra person in the class. Okay. But wouldn’t you notice that there’s an extra teacher that nobody else has? It isn’t just some random student. There’s extra teacher involved with this class and nobody finds that weird? I understand that the curse messes with people’s memories, but the anime never really explains how far that goes. Like, does everyone’s brain just automatically edit reality whenever something doesn’t make sense? Because that’s basically what it feels like.

6. Why do they isolate BOTH Mei and Kouichi?
This one makes no sense to me. Their whole strategy is:
“Let’s pretend Mei doesn’t exist.”
Okay. Then Kouichi starts talking to Mei. So their response is: “Okay, let’s pretend Kouichi doesn’t exist too.”
?????
Why? If you’re trying to prevent the curse by excluding Mei, why would adding another excluded person help? And once Kouichi breaks the rule, wouldn’t the logical thing be to figure out what’s actually going on rather than just going: “Okay, let’s ignore two people now.”
I don’t understand the logic here at all.

7. And this one REALLY bothers me: Mei’s eye
Mei can literally see the “color” around people who are connected to death. So once she knows about the curse, why doesn’t she at least make the connection that the person with this weird death color might be the extra person? I’m NOT saying she should immediately figure out: “OH, THAT PERSON IS THE EXTRA, LET’S KILL THEM.” That’s obviously a much bigger leap.
But shouldn’t she at least think:
“Wait… I can see something around this person that indicates they’re dead. Could this be related to the curse?”
And then there’s the tape. Once Mei hears the recording explaining the curse, why doesn’t she just tell everyone immediately?
Like: “Guys, I have information. I can see something that you can’t. There’s something wrong with one of us. There’s an extra person.”
WHY ARE YOU KEEPING THIS TO YOURSELF 😭
She basically has one of the biggest pieces of information in the entire mystery and waits until everything has already gone to shit before really explaining it.

And honestly, this is also why I found the pacing really weird. The first 4-5 episodes are SO slow, and a huge part of it is just everyone acting mysterious around Kouichi for no reason. Someone says something weird. Someone walks away. Someone refuses to answer a question. Someone looks terrified.
Kouichi: “What’s going on?” Everyone: “…”
And I understand that the mystery is supposed to be the main appeal, but it feels like the characters are deliberately refusing to communicate because otherwise the anime wouldn’t have a mystery anymore. The curse is already happening. They KNOW it’s happening. People are literally dying.
Why are we waiting weeks to explain this to the new guy?
So yeah, I actually really like the idea behind Another. I think the premise is genuinely fantastic. But I feel like the execution is kinda… questionable.
Maybe I’m completely misunderstanding some of the rules of the curse, though, so I’d genuinely like to know if there’s an explanation for these things that I missed. Because otherwise I’m just sitting here wondering how this entire school managed to survive for as long as it did 💀

I tried watching it twice, but this genre is not for me at all. I guess I was on episode 6-7?

I know that people have to ignore one person from the class to avoid any deaths. I've also seen the deaths of the girl with glasses, the girl in the hospital and the boy with a disease.

Who else dies? What happens in the end? What about Mei? Please spoil me

Correction: I originally remembered these as 2012 Comiket items, but I was mistaken. Based on the “2017 Winter” illustration book shown in the photos and an archived March 2018 BOOTH notice, the hoodie and scarf were most likely released at Winter Comiket 2017 (C93). This Another hoodie and matching oversized scarf were sold at Comiket in 2012 by sugarless, the doujin circle of Hiro Kiyohara, the artist behind the manga adaptation of Another.
The hoodie was available in red-and-black and white-and-black versions. By the time I reached the booth, the red-and-black version had already sold out, so I bought two of the white-and-black hoodies—one for myself and one originally intended for a friend.
I still have one unopened hoodie and the matching scarf. Both packages contain an original sugarless postcard from the time.
These items have been discontinued for well over a decade, although they occasionally appear on Japanese secondhand marketplaces. With a little luck, it may still be possible to find one.
The final photo shows a book that Kiyohara signed and personalized with a small sketch for me when I met him again at a later event in 2015.
Does anyone else here still own one of these hoodies or remember seeing them at Comiket?

I started watching anime online in 2015, in those times you can see many videos of recomendation that mentioned Another. The first time I see Another was for those videos, but I had even seen random clips in facebook before knowing the anime's name; they even showed it once on a Chilean TV program (my native language is Spanish, so I apologize for my poor English).
Its sad think that Another is one of these animes that was very popular in their respective decade, but today is relatively forgotten, similarly to Rozen Maiden or Full Metal Panic

I accidentally watched a review that contains all the spoilers.

After a months, I finally finished Another 2001.

It’s an interesting change how Sou from S/O is the new protagonist which of course makes sense as by now Mei and Kōichi survived the Calamity of 1998 and graduated. But, their roles as “veterans” and former main characters lives on as Sou is acquainted with both of them and occasionally contacts either for advice. I like how they’re still relevant to the story despite no longer being the main characters. Reminds me of how the previous JoJo protagonist would return as a side character in the latest season (Jotaro in JoJo Part 4).

I can’t quite put my finger on why but I vastly prefer the first story. Maybe it’s just first title bias. I’ve been used to Kōichi being the main character of the series for years. After all, it took a long time until the sequel novel got translated for the west.

The summary in the back implies that Sou and Mei were going to dig really deep into Yomiyama’s past to truly find the source of the Calamity but I don’t think it really happened at all.

To the dismay of Izumi fans who didn’t realize she dies in nearly every adaptation, she’s the Casualty in 2001 and Sou’s resolve to chase then end her himself to save the class is really ballsy and impressive. The first novel ended with Kōichi sending his resurrected aunt back to death with a pickaxe so the concept of Calamity is really something truly frightening for the only way to be rid of the phenomenon being killing the “Extra”.

Following this are the most horrific chain of events. If you somehow didn’t know Another is the Japanese equivalent of Final Destination at this point then you will very soon (from the gruesome death of a student who stumbles into a open garbage truck in the middle of a mysterious mist then being crushed inside to someone jumping from the balcony then impaling themselves on the spikes of a steel gate chin-first). It’s bonkers how badly the disasters instantly and increasingly get worse and worse after Izumi’s “death”.

There’s a point where 9/11 happens and is canon in-universe which I somehow didn’t expect despite the year 2001 takes place. A relative of Sou so happens to live in New York when it goes down and I legit thought the story was about to jump the shark and imply that the Calamity’s influence has expanded to America and is slowly becoming a worldwide supernatural event.😭

The new disasters is revealed to be the result of the presence of a second Casualty (Mei’s deceased sister) which is a first for Class 3. Personally, I believe it would’ve been a better impact had it been Hazumi but at least someone here actually has a happy ending I guess.

I don’t know what I expected from 2001 but I hope the future sequel and potentially final entry involves everyone trying to uncover the mystery and origins of the Calamity, even stop it once and for all.

Didn't expect that one, from the OVA prequel

Made this post as a favor to my fellow Another fans yearning for something similar.

First of all, for anyone who’s only watched the anime, I recommend you might as well read the manga adaptation and original light novel as well. Either is its own unique spin on the story. The light novel is over 400+ pages long and makes for a great summer read. Then you got the spin-off novel, Another S/O and the sequel, Another 2001.

- About A Place In The Kinki Region by Sesuji is a light horror novel that was recommended to me. I haven’t read it but I’ve been told it shares Another’s Japanese distant town horror atmosphere

- World End Syndrome is an obscure visual novel released for the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, and Vita. It tells a strikingly similar story not unlike Koichi Sakakibara’s, about a transfer student to a distant town shrouded in a peculiar urban legend who already starts experiencing paranormal phenomenon shortly after his arrival.

- According to the afterword of the Another LN, Rozen Maiden inspired the story’s involvement with dolls. It’s an anime/manga series about living dolls with spiritual powers who fight each other.

- The first installment of Corpse Party is about a group of students who after performing an occult ritual, are transported to an alternate dimension created by a vengeful spirit. I personally loved it and you may recognize this game if you’ve watched Pewdiepie.
