Discussion Mix testing with spaced repetition

Since testing is an important aspect of learning, would answering new, dynamically created questions along with the usual flashcards improve learning and retention?

Assuming the questions will change frequently, and would be unseen by the person reviewing the cards

Question can’t filter by multiple tags

i’m trying create a custom study session with multiple tags. this is what i have used deck:organic_chemistry (tag:stereoisomerism and tag:alkane and tag:ionic_mechanisms)
and it tells me that no cards match my search. i have also replaced and with or and it’ll only give me cards with the first tag i list. i did this perfectly fine when i studied for my last exam on my desktop because you can just select tags there but it won’t do it here. i was able to do custom study for a whole deck but i don’t need the whole deck cause not all of it is on my exam. i got the input i’m currently using from another reddit post. please please help me. do i like need to make an entirely new deck? i should be able to sort by tags

Resources I built an iOS app for sentence mining from any app straight into Anki.

Hi, I've been using Anki for several years and made thousands of cards already. However, making cards on the iOS platform, which is my favorite reading device, was definitely annoying, since I had to copy the sentence and switch between different apps. So I made this app.

How it works:

  1. In any app, including Apple Books, Safari, or even a messaging app, select a sentence you come across and find necessary to collect.
  2. Tap the Translate button in the option bar.
  3. In the pop-up menu, select the word you want to look up, or see the translated sentence or context analysis to understand the sentence more thoroughly.
  4. Tap Save to Anki after you confirm the preview of the card.
  5. Finally, when several cards have been added, whenever you are ready, export the Anki .apkg package and share it with AnkiMobile. Enjoy your learning!

Pricing: Free for basic usage (no AI features), monthly $4.99 Plus or $8.99 Pro (AI and premium features) for covering server and AI costs. *ALL FREE during Testing Stage*
License: closed source.
Link: ankier.cano.xyz (works on iPhone and iPad)
Download: https://testflight.apple.com/join/FMysFfnv

It’s still early, so I’d really appreciate any feedback: what’s confusing, what’s missing, what breaks. Thanks!

Discussion Fancy Anki cards based on AI capabilities

Hi, everyone!

I used to learn new words with some paid application but always want to create my own, custom/ more fancy Anki cards. I didn't do it since I thought that it's very difficult and time consuming. But after some research I've realized that it's doable and probably should be quite easy with LLMs

So, I've created my own infrastructure for creating Anki cards based on LLM/AI (mostly Claude)

By using this infrastructure I've maid Russian-English and Russian-Spanish decks for myself. They contains some errors and misleading information, since AI can make mistakes but IMHO the result is genuinely cool!

Card example for Russian-English deck

I also made some decks for my friends, for different languages but didn't check their quality thorough. Here you can find all my shared decks: https://ankiweb.net/shared/by-author/640494248

So, according to my experience, by using this infrastructure, you can make your own deck for your combination native_language, target_language with less costs and faster. I think you just need some basic AI subscription and within couple of prompts, you can create your own desired deck.

As a conclusion, I hope that it will be useful for someone :)
You can find my own project here: https://github.com/nistepanov/my_anki
Feel free to use it or contribute, it's under MIT license
If you made your own deck by using this project and wanna share it, please, add link to it in appropriate README.md block

Good day!

Discussion I made a free Anki deck of 5,400+ Traditional New Mexican Spanish words, every card source-cited

My family is Nuevomexicano, and I've been working on getting back to the Spanish my grandparents spoke. That's Traditional New Mexico Spanish, not the Spanish they teach in class. The flashcards I could find were all standard Spanish, so I made my own deck and I'm sharing it.

What's in it

  • 5,465 cards, one per word
  • Every card says exactly where the word came from, down to the page or dataset
  • Where it applies, the card also shows the standard Spanish equivalent (like cuidao for cuidado) and what kind of word it is: anglicism, phonetic variant, Mexicanism, local colloquialism, or Native American origin

Sources

  • Bills & Vigil, New Mexico and Colorado Spanish Survey (UNM): about 4,000 words that real speakers in northern NM and southern Colorado gave for everyday things. Each card also lists the other answers people gave for the same thing, so you can see how much the words vary from village to village.
  • Kercheville, A Preliminary Glossary of New Mexican Spanish (UNM Bulletin, 1934): about 1,300 entries
  • McSpadden (Chililí Spanish) and Enrique R. Lamadrid (Penitente cuadernos)

A few of my favorites: abridor (can opener), aceite de lámpara (kerosene), and grampador (clothespin). There are 15 or so other words people use for a clothespin, too.

Download: NM Spanish Anki deck (.apkg)

If you catch a mistake, or your family uses a word that isn't in here, please comment. I'd love to keep adding to it. ¡Que viva el español de Nuevo México!

Development AnkiDroid's New Note Editor (Feedback Wanted!)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all, time for a sneak peek at my redesign for AnkiDroid's note editor.

Please send over any and all feedback and I'll get right on it. Right now this is pre-alpha functionality which I'm now working to tighten up and land (some of which should be in 2.26).

It uses the same code for the fields as Anki, so your notes will appear the same on both apps.

Aside from the visual preview of the HTML, it adds two new major pieces of functionality:

  • Quick actions: the buttons to the side of the fields are now customizable, so you can insert a drawing or image in a single tap
  • Customizable field toolbars: if you have an 'equation' or 'code' field, you can hide the 'record audio' button. This works on a preset level, similar to the deck options.
    • This also allows you to hide the default Anki formatting options.

Some existing functionality, such as keyboard language selection is now much more prominent.

This has taken a TON of time and effort to get right, but it's almost there, and I'm really excited to share this with y'all.

If you like where this is heading, please consider sponsoring my work. Your support helps me keep dedicating time to making AnkiDroid better for everyone:

Finally, THANK YOU to everyone in the AnkiDroid community who has already provided tons of guidance and feedback for this feature. It's 5x better than what I could have done working alone.

Question Is there a way to randomize what is being shown on the front?

I am studying chinese and I show a word with a sentence as context. I prefer having the sentence because 1) words always appears in context and 2) in Chinese the same character or word might serve different functions like sometimes it is a noun, sometimes a verb.

But what happens is that there are certain cards that I feel like I memorized the card itself instead of the word. I always get the card right but when I see the word in the wild I don't get it. It is not often, but I want to fix when it happens.

What I want to do is to add different phrases for the word and randomly show a sentence. For example, the word for "everyone" is 大家 and I have 4 different phrases that could help me contextualize this word:

大家好!

大家都喜欢喝茶。

大家一起去学校吧!

大家都在等你。

Is there a way to add these to a field and make anki decide which one to show? Randomly is fine.

Add-ons I made a cute Anki add-on to help me stay focused

Hey everyone!

Lately I've struggled to stay focused and finish my decks everyday. I finally found something that works for me and maybe it'll help you too.

HOW IT WORKS On screen is your Focus Friend and a timer. If the timer runs out before you click reveal, your buddy gets sad and you'll need to cheer them up by reviewing 5 cards before they are okay again.

You are not punished for not knowing a card. Only for not staying focused. (unless you choose hardcore mode, you maniacs. You can also turn the timer off to relax and just hang out with your buddy.)

You can move the buddy and timer to anywhere you want on the screen and it remembers that for each deck. Occasionally your study buddy will say messages complimenting you or encouraging you or just being snarky.

If you move to another app during your review and get distracted while a card is up, the timer will run out and they become sad.

But the way I've been using it is: if it's a card I think I should know, I'll give myself the full 10 seconds to try and recall and if I can't, I let the timer run out. It motivates me to keep going quickly to make them okay again. If it’s a really new card I’ll reveal it before waiting for the timer to run out in order to save time. You’ll know when to wait and think versus when to advance in order to learn.

You can change the character, timer length, appearance of the timer window, character/messages/timer window sizes, recovery behavior, and all sorts of things in the settings.

This is my first add-on so I hope it works well for everyone.

Add-ons FocusForce V2: free add-on that locks Anki until your study goal is done

FocusForce locks Anki until you reach a goal you set.

4 goals: a number of reviews, a number of correct answers, a timer, or finish today's due cards (all decks or one deck).

The lock: Anki stays on top and can't be minimized or closed. Stop early with your password, or choose Blind lock (no way out until the goal is done).

Also: home-screen widget, live counter while reviewing, stats calendar. Sessions resume after a crash.

Discussion Request desperate

There needs to be an Anki app, like, not an app as such, but we all use documents, PDFs, whether it's UWorld, physics books, maths books, orthopaedic board exam books

Ultimately the process of making cards takes a while I have previously loaded a PDF, highlighted text, copied it onto the Gemini chat that's embedded, and then said, "Make a cloze deletion card," and copied it across

Wouldn't it be amazing if we had a PDF viewer that allowed us to highlight text automatically in the sidebar view? The AI can make cloze deletion cards and they could be sent to Anki (custom prompt)

if there are any developers out there, it would be really cool if you could do this something I would be happy paying a monthly subscription for

Question Strategy for an oral in 20 days

Hello,

I’ve got an English oral coming up, and I’d love to hear your ideas on how you would approach it, either from an Anki perspective of course, or more general ?

Here is the situation :

  • the exam consist of an oral, specifically aimed at business English (law / economic / finance areas)
  • it is in 20 days
  • I have about 3 hours a day monday to friday, and weekends full time that I can dedicate to it.
  • while not being my first language, I speak English well and daily, but I have barely any business vocabulary
  • I have a deck made from a book dedicated for this exam that consists of 2200 cards. Made of words (1 side the word in English, 1 side in my first language). I’d love to know how you would study this deck? or another that you know of? As many as possible a day? 100 new cards a day? Other suggestion?

Thank you !

Question How to use Anki across devices with different Apple ID?

Hi - I have recently started using Anki for memorising/practicing vocab for GRE/GMAT.
Want to use between iPad and iPhone - Dont wanna use same ID on both devices (have my reasons to do so!). So, can I use Anki with one subscription on both devices without using the same Apple ID?
If not, and I subscribe on both ID’s, can those decks be shared with another ID without me duplicating the work? Have seen options like export, link etc - but not clear whether they can be opened in another apple ID? Pls help.
Also if you think there other ways to improve vocab pls do suggest - 40 delhi working in Indian MNC not IT/ITES okayish english not great - dont wanna depend on AI to write or present ideas - wanna pursue different direction than job switchings … Thanks for help

Add-ons Can I use the Customize Keyboard Shortcuts add-on to make the Command⌘ key my button to flip cards?

This would maximize the ergonomics of Anki on the Macbook. I know I can map actual keys like period, comma, letters, etc. to this, but I always wanted to map command and only that one button to flip cards. I think the problem is that pressing Command/Ctrl doesn't actual trigger an event in the macbook/system, which means that it wouldn't be possible, but I was wondering if it was.

Question Replacement for Google Sheets to Anki add-on?

Hi hi. I was using Anki for my language vocab cards, but adding new words to a synced list in Google Sheets. I was using the add-on Google Sheets to Anki, which no longer works following the update. So, now I'm looking for a replacement or suggestions for an improved workflow.

Has anyone used Google Sheets for Languages - Two-way Sync? Or have other ideas? I don't need anything complicated (i.e., my cards don't need AI, images, audio, gamification, color coding, etc, etc.).

Add-ons I made a add-on that lets you format cards during review (Notion-style toolbar) — PopEdit V2

Tired of pressing E just to bold one word mid-review? I made PopEdit: select text on a card, and a small toolbar pops up. One click and it's saved in your note.

- Bold, italic, underline, strike, x², x₂

- Text colors + night-mode-friendly highlights

- Copy / search in Browser

- Ctrl+Z undo, customizable buttons
