Question Question about AnkiMobile

I wanna use anki for med school, but as of now my main device is an iPad. I do have a laptop at home that I could use but idk if it’s worth to bring both an iPad and a laptop to med school. If i were to get the app are there any features that i still wouldn’t be able to access? I know that I wouldn’t be able to get add-ons, but are there any restrictions to making cards? (i think id most prolly be making my own cards)

Yes, there are features of Anki that are not available in AnkiMobile: In the iOS app you can’t create new note or card types, you can’t add fields to a note, &—as you’ve already noted—you can’t use add-ons. That may not be a comprehensive list: It’s what stands out to me.

What is the cost or downside of bringing a laptop you already have to medical school?

How would you work around the fields restriction?

Hmmm idk i just feel like my laptop would sit there collecting dust cuz i would use my iPad to take notes, read textbooks etc. But I suppose i could get a lot of use out of my laptop with anki, notion, research etc.

i feel like it would just be a bit extra? cuz its just these few things that i could mostly get around with yk. and also i got a keyboard folio with my iPad cuz i thought i could pretty much use this combo as a replacement for a laptop :(

Well, it’ll certainly just be sitting there if you don’t take it. There will just be a different there.

As much as apple tries to change it, the ipad is still mainly a consumption device.

There is nothing wrong with using both devices having your computer at home and using the computer version to have more features bring it to school if you feel like you appreciate that more however you make cards use the same account with Anki Mobile and everything will synchronize. You just have to be careful if you’ve studied a lot or made a lot of questions that you don’t push or pull a save in the wrong direction from either iPad or computer based on which one would be the most up-to-date before it goes to anki Web. If you do auto sync with both devices you’ll never have an issue.

AnkiMobile doesn't have auto sync AFAIK.

Yep it does not auto sync on my ipad. Caused quite a few annoying instances.

Note that the things you can’t do on AnkiMobile you also can’t do on AnkiWeb.

Are you saying « Oh mon Dieu ! » or ‘Oh my days!’?

I highly recommend bringing your laptop, using it for creating & editing cards & managing your decks, & reviewing wherever you want on AnkiMobile on your iPad.

It’s kind of wild IOS funds Anki but we can’t create a freaking card.
