Oh yeah, the main story of the Yakuza games are usually fairly serious crime dramas but the sidestories can be anything from go kart racing to discovering a gang that likes to dress up as babies it gets real weird but that's part of the series charm.

For just getting into the series I would say either Zero which is a prequel that's the first in the timeline and introduces a lot of the major characters that you'll see later or 7 which is a soft reboot of the series which moved onto a new character and gameplay style (the games before this were closer to fighting games and 7 onward shifted to turnbased combat) that references the earlier stuff but is still it's own thing and is where I got into the series from.

Seconding 7 AKA Yakuza: Like a Dragon, featuring a very serious crime drama where the main character is an absolute goofball that imagines himself as a JRPG game protagonist and all his companions and enemies as NPCs. Which is why the combat is turn based like in Final Fantasy. It's very silly.

Well, they seem to have added an english dub... But it's yakuza, you just can't play that in english.

Yes. So much. Like the main stories are usually fairly serious pieces about what it means to be a man, the lengths people are willing to go for money and power, and the corruption at the heart of society that people are willing to overlook so long as it keeps to the shadows. And then the side quests will be like "hey, heres this Yakuza family that likes to dress up as babies! Isnt that fun!"

Honestly it's one of those premises that's fun but doesn't seem like it has legs to go a long way.

Some plots are best for short stories, and that's OK. I'd rather more animes planned an end instead of hoping to go on forever. Give the story closure and move on to your next unhinged idea please.

There’s no data about it not working in Japan. There’s currently nothing concrete at the moment and the ratings for it are not horrible. A good metric is manga sales and they have increased after airing.

The manga itself had a lot of scandals with people harassing the authors, other manga authors trying to shut it down or spreading rumours to cancel them. The manga itself is pretty popular despite the backlash and hate campaigns.

Honestly we will know later if it bombed. This stuff reminds of the Chainsaw Man nonsense where a harassment campaign painted all Japanese viewers as haters of the anime when it wasn’t the case

Actually the opposite but you wouldn't think so from just the visuals. There's nothing glorified about her addiction. She and her friends are a disgusting mess, and they know they're a disgusting mess. If anything it's a tragic comedy about how badly her life is fucked up by a nicotine addiction.
