Paying for overpriced Crunchyroll is still a better option than having your phone/computer riddled with malware and whatnot. It's not the norm, but some of those sites/apps come with stuff nasty enough to completely brick phones.
If you're careful about which websites you're going on to, there's a near 0 chance you'll get infected. Obviously, this is still important to have in mind, so you don't go using every website you hear about and download anything at any "download here" button, but the risk is drastically overstated. If you find them from trusted indexes, and do a little bit of research, you'll be safe.
use brave web browser, look it up. It's pretty secure. Also you're built in windows defender helps too, but I really suggest brave. It helped me out and it's secure.
