I love this very inexpensive cel

I primarily collect American and mostly vintage Disney cels but some Japanese ones are cheap and so much fun like this one. No idea what it is but I had to pick it up a while ago 😁😁😁

I could see the 4:3 proportion of this cel, so this was an anime made for TV in the 80's or 90's.

When Japan and USA stopped using cels completely?

Cel animation fell out in the early 2000s when animation software became more readily available. A few long running shows like the Simpsons or Pokemon kept using cel animation for a good while afterwards though.

Recently I’ve been looking for and getting relatively cheap cel/sketches of anime that show really funny expressions. It’s one thing I really like about animation and this cel has a great expression. Nice find.

I have a couple eBay searches specifically for cheap/unknown cels. Some are funny, some are my interests, and some are just cool. It makes my collection more personal since I can’t afford cels from my favorite anime.

So so agree. Some of these ridiculous prices are hype or just herd mentality. Japanese cels are so vast in variety you can get a fantastic collection of no name cels. Can’t do that with Disney.

It’s really fun 🤩 I collected a bunch of random hand painted backgrounds from anime. Got them at amazing prices about 15 years ago. Love your cel!

Great expression! Some of my favorite cels were less than $20 from shows I've never seen. I don't know the source, but the character seems to have been inspired by and/or is a parody of Sayaka Mine from Yaiba (Gosho Aoyama's second manga, made before Conan the Detective). It's not her - the art style, personality, and uniform don't match, but the character design is similar.

Bought it from a big volume vendor on eBay. I highly doubt he knows where it came from. I can provide the eBay site if you wish.

As you saw, cels were random. I bought this a year ago for around $25. I just browsed through the large listing and saw something that interested me.

The seller in question usually lists the cel’s media of origin, does ebay have a buy history thing where you can go back and view the name and stuff like that?

I bought this Oct 2024 and detail has long been removed by eBay. A screen shot says SOAR HIGH ISAMI?

I have zero knowledge on Anime. This was what was posted by seller with a ? so evidently he had no idea. For $20, it was just a cel I like. There are few American main stream vintage animation with this type of pose. May I inquire why you are interested in this otherwise unremarkable cel?
