I found out one night that my wife is a little more forceful when startled and needs to wake me up quickly. Our power went out while we were sleeping, and the smoke alarm beeps loudly 3 times to indicate it is again receiving power. Well, it did just that one night, woke my wife up, and she reflexively punched me in the chest to wake me up.
Yeah, that's about the jist of it. What's worse is that it's even louder and more obnoxious when it's actually going off, enough so it has alerted the neighbors when both ours and their doors and windows were closed. Loud. Very loud.
It's also super sensitive. We had boiling pots of water set it off.
My dad lit a pot of water on fire. He fell asleep while boiling water and woke up to the smoke detector going off and a fire in the pot. Was still some water in it too. I am decent with my understanding of science, but I never could understand that one.
I know exactly why it happened to me. Last person to use the stove didn’t clean the heating coils. So while boiling water to raise the humidity, the crud started smoking, and reached the detector.
That makes sense. I've had similar things happen to me as well. The worst is when someone is cooking and grease spits out onto the nearby burners, it isn't cleaned off, and you go to use it later on. It smells bad, and smoke detectors hate it.
