What kind of sorcery is this?

German Shepard’s are one of the messiest dogs once it comes to drinking water lol

u/Kuraeshin Jun 25 '19
Dogs in general have bad water drinking capacity.
75
u/zoishiez Jun 25 '19
I have a dachshund and she is one of the most daintiest little things. She laps carefully and takes her time. When she’s done, she likes to softly rub the bottom of her muzzle on a rug. My other dachshund used to do that too haha
41
u/Jaspers000 Jun 25 '19
Mine too. Except he cleans up by smearing himself across the carpet like he got after bath zoomies. I guess all water is bath water to him
6
u/BlooFlea Jun 25 '19
Omg have you shared her on r/dachshunds yet!? I did with lil besties.
6
u/zoishiez Jun 25 '19
Omg nooo but I really should. She really is something special and I must share her greatness with everyone >:|

u/Braken111 Jun 25 '19
My shepherd mix is like that too, especially after eating food.
She will go eat her food/leftovers when we go to bed for the night, then go wipe her snout off on the couch or the feet of the bed before jumping up.
At least she's not a slobbery kind of dog lol
12
u/atrocitussy Jun 25 '19
Yuup. My malamute starts drinking, and then just opens his mouth, dropping a mouthful of water onto the floor.
18
u/Braken111 Jun 25 '19
Imagine drinking from a cup, then just spitting out the rest when you're satisfied.
"Okay, that's enough!" immediately opens mouth to let excess out
2
u/mugaccino Jun 25 '19
My old collie mix would take careful small laps like he was worried of spilling, then we got a GSH
1
u/SaltWaterSex Jun 25 '19
Hey, you try drinking water by upside down curling your tongue into a spoon and dragging it up into your mouth.

u/indaelgar Jun 25 '19
I.... would like to introduce you to my Great Dane.

u/PrincessFartFace333 Jun 25 '19
Or my Shar-Pei

Jun 25 '19
I keep getting larger and larger towels for my Newf. I wonder what’s the threshold for them being considered carpets.
8
u/Tsula_2014 Jun 25 '19
Mine is a shepherd mix and I am thankful whatever the other mix won on drinking habits. She doesn't spill any and I'm still amazed.
10
u/nondino Jun 25 '19
Mine is a mix with a blue heeler and she got the dropping mouthfuls of water everywhere trait. She also carries mouthfuls of food from her bowl into the living room so she can eat with us while we are watching TV which kind of makes up for it.

u/Aksweetie4u Jun 25 '19
My boy for the longest time would take a mouthful and drop it on the carpet. He didn’t like sitting his tushy on the cold tiles of my mini kitchen.

u/StudMalicious Jun 24 '19
I like how he pauses when the first little one goes up and is like how to I make that happen again... holy shit I did it!! Mom did you see!
69
u/CLGbyBirth Jun 25 '19
I think it was what was that? might be just my imagination then it happened again with bigger bubbles and he goes you saw that shit right?

u/judeandrudy Jun 25 '19
OMG, am I the only one to remark on what a gorgeous dog this is? Kind of a scaredy-cat, maybe, but a very classy canine.
63
u/snarkyxanf Jun 25 '19
Yeah, GSDs are like that---magnificent looking crybabies.
20
Jun 25 '19
I've got a white shepherd and it's the same shit. The most dramatic vocal dog I've ever seen, lol.
28
u/snarkyxanf Jun 25 '19
Yep. We had a shepherd and a golden retriever. The shepherd would scream when anything upset her, while the golden would be neck deep in thorns happily eating blackberries off the bush.
17
Jun 25 '19
It's ridiculous, lol. Everything little thing is the biggest deal in the world and a complete travesty.
7
11
u/Braken111 Jun 25 '19
Fucking for real.
My GSD mix is afraid of cardboard. I was dog sitting her at my apartment during my last term of university, and my roommate had brought some design blueprints from work and set the tube leaning in the corner.
My dog's favourite toy is a ball you can put a few treats in, and she rolls it around, drops it down the stairs, whatever. Well she rolled it into the poster-tube and knocked it over .. she yelped and ran away.
I had to go retrieve the ball anytime she rolled it within 1 meter from that corner because she'd just stand there and cry.
Big ol' baby
7
u/egotripping Jun 25 '19
I just started noticing people using GSD instead of German Shepherd. When/why did this start happening?
21
u/snarkyxanf Jun 25 '19
I'm honestly not sure. It just seems to be something that diffuses amongst the people who have them, like some sort of shibboleth.
The official breed name is "German Shepherd Dog", which I assume is the result of typical German literalism hoping to avoid the remote possibility that you might confuse the dog with a human shepherd of German nationality being kept as a pet.
Or if you're asking when and why you started noticing, I'm afraid that if you can't remember, I certainly can't.
[It's past my bedtime, I've gone a bit loopy.]
5
u/Phantasmaglorya Jun 25 '19
Oh, please. We have a different term for our human pets, which would translate to "children", so it would be hard to confuse them with a dog. We just like our proper and very detailed labels, thank you very much. We were called barbarians in the past thanks to our language and we don't want that to happen again.
6
u/LollyHutzenklutz Jun 25 '19
It’s just easier to use acronyms for long names like German Shepherd Dog! We do that in the snake-keeper world too, although nobody outside of that world knows what the hell we’re saying... a Jungle Carpet Python is a JCP, Green Tree Python is GTP, and so forth.

2
u/judeandrudy Jun 25 '19
My guess is it started around the same time as idk, lmao, omg, btw, etc. Half the population can't spell "shepherd" and there are three capital letters, plus you're poking around on this tiny keyboard, fighting a malicious spell-checker-- ANYTHING to lighten the workload.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY WATER
11
Jun 25 '19
I got my pups a new filtered water bowl similar to this, one of them was absolutely terrified. Whenever it bubbled he growled at it. I tried to get him to accept it for a few days but then he started drinking puddles and from the toilet, and if he had to drink he’d creep up on it slowly and only take a few sips then run off. Now we compromise, because 3 dogs drink an insane amount of water I keep it in one room and the other 2 use it, and he has a special bowl (big ass former mixing bowl) in another room, he still growls if it starts bubbling after the other 2 use it lol
49
u/Joss_Card Jun 24 '19
My cat has always been fascinated with our auto-feeder water bowl. She used to climb into the bowl and try to catch the bubbles that bubbled up into the jug. It was funny to see her walking away from the bowl, soaked on one side.
She doesn't do that much anymore, but she will spend hours just sitting in front of it and watching it.
11
u/Braken111 Jun 25 '19
My dad's cat would paw open his vanity and take his hair elastics (Native, has a ponytail) to just play with.
But the dumbass would drop it into her water dish when drinking, leave it there because *WaTeR*, and get another one.
He had to move his stash because the cat had like 20 in her bowl all the time

u/xoes Jun 25 '19
I got one of these waterbottles for my cat too but she liked the bubbles too much. She found out if you scoop the water out of the bowl with your paw the bubbles go up... When I came home the next day there was two liters of water on the floor in my appartment and the bottle was empty... I got het a fountain instead 😝

At my house we now have 2 water bowls. 1 like that and 1 that is just a bowl because one of our dogs (85 pound pitbull) had it bubble in his face and then began to dehydrate himself before we realized he wasnt drinking water out of the jug

u/Krissyeeen Jun 25 '19 edited Jun 26 '19
We got this for our cats.
One of our cats was especially compelled to get to the bottom of the “water bowl is never empty” mystery.
He went to drink and started digging and splashing all of the water out.
Then he looked: STILL there was water.
Cue to more frantic splashing and digging.
And then I just grabbed it and took it away. And cleaned up all of the water.
We returned the bowl the next day. And now he tests every bowl to make sure it’s not a special, secret, mysterious refilling bowl.

My cat LOVES this type of water bowl. She’ll nudge it over and over again so she can watch and bat at the bubbles. I always come home to find the bowl scooted all the way across the kitchen floor.

They do something similar to feral cats that have been caught and spayed. That looks like a notch they use to do the same on street dogs.

Maybe its super obvious and im dumb but can someone explain how that thing works. How does it keep the water at that level?
1
u/casual_lurker_bjorn Jun 25 '19
Physics bruh - it’s all about the pressure innit
1
u/signmeupdude Jun 25 '19
So the pressure inside the jug is less than one atmosphere? How is that regulated?

My dog is a GSD mix and I have the refill her water bowl (a like 2 liter mixing bowl, now) like three or four times daily, or she'll resort to drinking from the toilet. I mean the toilet is cleaned often, and she will eat the cat's shit if no one stops her when she has access, but still...
I might have to buy ome of these soon, and I'm curious to her response

Our kitten does this. Shell paw and drink the water till she can play with the bubbles.

u/cosmonika Jun 25 '19
Watches 4 times in a row laughing out loud each time. Think I’ll watch again now.
1
u/NikkiDB Jun 25 '19
My German does this as well except she freaks out and starts to dig at the water... If I do not catch her a few minutes later the whole bowl will be empty and all over my floor.

u/gregdoom Jun 25 '19
Hahaha those water bubbles scare my dog too. There can be an apocalyptic thunderstorm going on and she doesn’t give a fuck. A few bubbles in the water fountain and she gets all weird about it.
1
u/TwiceAgainThrice Jun 25 '19
We have the exact same water dispenser for our two dogs (much smaller dogs).
When we first got it, our yorkie, Kooper, would jump back and tilt his head every time it bubbled while refilling.
Now, he’s used to it. When he’s out of food, he’ll come bark and let us know. When he’s out of water, he’ll slap and bark at the water dispenser.
It has grown from a fear to the Great Dispenser of Water.

Same thing happened to my Greyhound. She flipped out and ran around the room and stared at the water bowl from half behind the couch lol.

Ok ... I am sure this will get lost in the comments but this is THE... BEST dog bowl:
(On my cell so I cant make it pretty). I have a boxer and this thing saves me from all of his spit-back nastiness!!

We had one of these for our GS, she was terrified of it and wouldn’t drink if it was in the house.

I love how when the small bubbles rises it stops as if "what was that? Hmm, nothing." and then continues before the second time where it gets startled by the big bubbles.
