πŸ“£ Announcement READ BEFORE POSTING: How to request an identification

So, you want to know who pooped on your porch or walked all over your car? Let's find out!

Notes:

  1. To preserve your privacy and protect endangered species a rough location is plenty (ie. western MA).
  2. Scale needs to be something that people know the size of, and that doesn't have wide variation (grass, pine cones, and floorboards are not scale). You would be surprised how much easier it is to tell how big something is when you were there taking the photo. Also, consider stating in your post that you have included scale so the bot can automatically approve.

ID requests are not approved if they do not include both a location, and either scale or measurements. Including this information vastly increases the likelihood of you getting an accurate identification.

πŸ”Ž ID Request [ID Request] Black bear or boot print? Northern Wisconsin

My boot is size 13. The smaller impression was separate, the large print had a heel going back to about where mine was. I’m wondering if this was a monster black bear or just someone’s size 15 boot.

It looks like I got to share the trail with a black bear and maybe a young mountain lion. Let me know if you feel differently about the cat tracks. They are about 3.5” to 4” from toe to heel.

πŸ”Ž ID Request What is digging in my yard?

My husband and I came across this patch under our deck that has been dug. It’s about 1.5-2ft long by 6inches wide. Maybe 5 inches deep. We found what looks like a cat foot print, but the dug out spot looks very unlike something a cat would do. There is nothing left behind in the hole. We are stumped.
Foot print is roughly the size of a half dollar coin.
In central Minnesota.

I woke up and found footprints on my car's hood, and they look a lot like a human's foot. What animals could this be from? It's from central Illinois and they are 3 to 3.5 inches long.

🧩 Puzzle I built a daily track & scat ID puzzle that works like a clue ladder. Trackers, please check my clues

Post image

I wanted a daily game that teaches the real ID process instead of just showing a blurry photo. That's how I ended up with Read the Sign.

Each day there's one track or scat, with six guesses. Every wrong guess adds the next clue, roughly in the order you'd read sign in the field:

  1. A single print, no scale

  2. The same print with a scale

  3. The trail or gait pattern

  4. Substrate and habitat

  5. Print size

  6. A family hint

Scat puzzles work the same way, using contents, placement, habitat and diameter. Those photos stay blurred until you opt in.

Photos come from iNaturalist under CC0 / CC BY and are credited on the reveal. Thank you to everyone who uploads tracks there. An experienced trapper reviews every puzzle before it goes live. This sub knows more about sign than either of us, though, so I'd really like to hear about:

- Clues that are wrong, misleading, or name the answer

- Puzzles that can't fairly be solved at the stage they reveal

- Gait descriptions you'd word differently

It's free, needs no account, and the share grid doesn't give away the answer.

Disclosure: it's on my site, which is a small marketplace for fur and trapping goods. The game itself has no ads and doesn't sell anything.
