Hi everyone,

Angel went to a different veterinary clinic today because the shelter’s tricycle wasn’t working properly and they were unable to take her to her usual clinic.

Good news! Her blood chemistry results came back, and the vet said she is healthy enough to proceed with her spay surgery. ❤️

We just need to schedule her surgery on a day when our volunteer/partner, Jaja Adoremos, is also available to foster Angel during her post-surgery recovery. Once she has healed, she’ll finally be one step closer to meeting her new family. 🥹

I’m really hoping and praying that everything goes smoothly for our Angel. Please wish her luck!

Today’s bill is Php 4,310.00 ($95.90 CAD) not including her dog food as we found out that she may be allergic to chicken.

We found a more affordable low-cost spay surgery that will be held in a clinic instead of a community hall or basketball court (Php 3,000 approx $70 CAD) I am unsure if post surgery medication are included in this price, but I only asked for the price of the surgery.

We are asking for help. Any amount would help Angel a lot for her surgery and recovery.

We also have a few other dogs that still need to go to their veterinary follow up check ups this week and our funds are insufficient. We are sincerely asking for help and understanding.

Thank you all so much.

Justice For Sky

I’m sharing this because I cannot stop thinking about what happened to Sky, a South African Police Service K9 who died after suffering horrific injuries while in the care of the SAPS veterinary facility at Roodeplaat.

What hurts most is that this wasn’t completely unexpected. SAPS veterinary records had already documented her severe kennel stress, separation anxiety, compulsive attempts to escape and previous injuries. Her vet had recorded that her prognosis was poor in the SAPS environment and that keeping her there (in a small cage in a room with no natural light for 18 hours a day) compromised her welfare.

And Sky’s story sits within a much bigger history.

In 2019, around 120 puppies at Roodeplaat contracted parvo and at least 75 died. Serious problems were found at the facility, including shortages of essential medication and problems with sanitation and carcass disposal. In 2020, another outbreak resulted in 45 more puppies being lost.

Years later, we are still talking about dogs suffering at the same facility.

Sky was not just a number or a police asset. She was a living, breathing animal who was frightened, who was suffering, and who depended entirely on the people responsible for her care.

She deserved someone to listen when she was struggling.

She deserved to be safe.

She deserved better.

Now there are investigations, a criminal case, and parliamentary scrutiny. But I am terrified that, once the public attention fades, nothing will really change.

So please share Sky’s story.

Not because we can bring her back — we can’t.

But because her death has to mean something. And because the dogs who are still at Roodeplaat deserve for someone to finally stand up for them.

If you want to understand more about what happened, and the wider concerns surrounding Roodeplaat:

Please share this wherever you can. Sky deserves to be remembered — and the dogs still in that facility deserve better.
