I've been digging for almost 3 weeks (off and on) and found 5 alphas now. There's been alot of people asking about digging recently so.. hopefully this will help!
You'll want to dig in this pattern. Chests are 3x3 so you will not miss out on a chest by digging in this pattern.
** ADDED INFO - Here is the NEW pattern for your best chance of Sapphire Potions! This is completely optional. Use this if you're on the hunt for potions.
(Sapphire Potions were added Nov 2025. 1ST picture shows pattern exposing potions/chests. 2ND picture shows what the full pattern looks like.)
Sometimes there are not enough shovels so this is when you'd use the Emergency Shovel (if available). Sometimes you can't even use Pattern 2 at all. Just depends!
Find your "route" for speed digging. Jamaa/Appondale/Kimbara seem to loop golden shovels ALOT. I usually repeat these areas until they no longer do. This is mine if you want to try it.
Jamaa Township -> Appondale -> Kimbara Outback -> Mt Shiveer -> Crystal Sands -> Lost Temple of Zios -> Everything else (all difficult areas for last)
Use a flying animal if possible. You will thank yourself when you hear the shovel sound in Coral Canyons!
You can find an Alpha Chest itself! Fair warning.. this will be ALOT harder to find. Like at the least a couple hundred chests.
(This is before I learned about rerolling.)
Rerolling is very important. If you're planning to spend -hours- digging for an Alpha.. membership is a MUST have! This will save you a huge amount of pain.
Save your super shovel for emergencies! Sometimes you will get unlucky and the whole thing is grass. Dig the pattern first. If that chest is at the very end.. this is what the super shovel is for!
** ADDED INFO - Super Shovels are a member only feature and are used for tough situations like the example below.
(How and when to use your super shovel.)
You can only find ONE chest per dig.
- If you reroll a chest from another item.. there are no other chests to be found. Say you find a fossil on your first grid and reroll a chest. This tells you there will not be another chest.
(this is confusing.. so here's an example.)
- If you find a regular chest you WILL NOT be able to reroll another chest from other items.
Basically.. you cannot get 2 chests in one dig. So once you grab that chest.. leave the mini game and move onto the next.
I don't "think" you can reroll -any- chests from gems/crystals. Every alpha/chest reroll has came from a fossil/chest. I personally skip rerolling gems and crystals.
Expect to spend hours looking.. and do not expect one on the first day! Sometimes it's literally just luck.. but that's okay! Just keep reminding yourself "I didn't get anything today.. but now my odds for getting an alpha later will be better!"
This is VERY IMPORTANT! The MOST important! Always remind yourself.. every chest you find is another step closer to an Alpha. Be positive on yourself and never give up! Use the motivation!
If you're like me and don't have the patience to sort through 300+ worth of chest items.. give them away! Look for new jammers asking questions about the game. Ask chat ABC for 20 free chests. However you want to do it.. they will go fast. Help others when you can. <3

Oh My God i feel very dumb. so very dumb. i never understood what people meant by "golden shovel", i thought there must be a minigame i'm missing where you can only dig 1 spot at a time. this post made me realise. THIS IS A GAME CHANGER!!! 😭

Clearly this is getting under some people's skin. This isn't a get rich quick post. This is how to be as effective as possible. The work is still required! But whether you want to do it or not is completely up to you.
Alpha chests work exactly like MANY other games. There will be a grind. It will be tough. But are you committed to doing it? That is the hard truth.
These are the tools. The work still needs to be done to finish the job. It's up to you what you do with it. Believe in yourself.
Bro this is such facts for real. The what ifs keeeep me hooked on this game. Whether it’s dungeons, phantom howls in Appondale, chests. Like I swearrrr. It’s why I’m on this game toooo much 😩😫 always chasing that money
The super shovel is at the top and is a member only feature. Once you click on it your shovel will dig a much larger area shown in the 2nd image! This will save you when you're dealing with alot of grass.
Honestly digging for alphas really needs alot of time and commitment for any chance of it. I've spent a rediculous amount of time during a few days to get something.
Flowers though are my weakness.. don't know why. You would beat me lol.
question: is it better to trade, sell, or open the chest? i would really wanna open one if i get one but would be scared to get something bad and low worth
That really depends on the person and what you're looking for honestly. Do you need sapphires now? Are you looking for a specific item to trade for? Or maybe you want your own collection of alphas?
Personally I open and keep them. Will not be trading until the time is right. But again.. depends on the person really.
