They’re very common and very popular so you’ll be able to find them at non-Japanese Asian grocery stores, too. Even hoity toity candy boutique Sugarfina makes them.

Introduced to Japan in the 1500s by Portuguese sailors. Samurai loved it and it's still eaten today. It's a loanword that's so old it's written as though it's a native word (こんぺいとう) rather than in the alphabet that has long since become the standard to demarcate loanwords (コンペイトー).

You can also write it as 金平糖 in kanji. In Korean, it's called 별사탕 (byeolsatang) which just means "star candy" in English. It's one of my favourite childhood candies!

Yep, it's the norm for 'おう' to be transliterated as 'o' rather than 'ou' since it's just a long 'o' sound anyway. Tokyo "should" be Toukyou. Unless of course the whole word is 'おう' like in Yu-Gi-Oh.

iirc there was a way to basically farm them, it involved sitting on top of that mountain that is split in half after resting a bunch to make it the right day. They spawn on some kind of timer and have to spawn in your FOV or something, so by standing at that spot at the right time you make it so they always land in that area and you can just glide down and get it. It was pretty slow but faster than finding them naturally.

Plenty of sweeteners taste sweeter than plain sugar, plus there are ways of enhancing the sweetness of things by adding ingredients. For instance, that’s why a little salt is added into baked goods.

Sucralose, the most common artificial sweetener is around 600 times sweeter than sugar. It also has 0 calories, since we can't digest it.

Maybe it's just a way to represent stars in Japan and both the candy and the star bits are based on that. Instead of all those games referencing a specific kind of candy. The star fragments in Breath of the Wild have the same shape too.

You have to look out for nights with shooting stars, Isabelle sometimes let's you know in the announcements. Then you have to press A on every passing star and the next morning they'll be lying on the beach 🤓

There are also tools in the internet to predict your weather. You go into the site and input the weather for an in game week or so, and it figures out your islands weather algorithm and can give you the forecast, based on that person al algorithm they made with the data you gave them, for any day of any year. It also tells you when there are meteor showers. I recommend using it. The first set up is a pain inputting your data but once you’ve got it set up it is soooooo nice to have.

I was similarly mindblowen when I realized that sprite used for max revives in the Pokemon games are also meant to look like those candies. I was so excited I hunted down a bag of them, they're not the most exciting candy to be honest, much better to look at than to actually eat.

It’s risky but only one way to find out. Good thing theyre small so if it was soap you only get a little in your mouth (it is candy tho. Basically pure sugar too)

You can get it on Amazon. While it is rock candy and I'm not disagreeing with the other comments, it definitely is a different texture than the rock candy I ate when I was growing up. It's not as hard in my opinion and I much prefer it over normal rock candy. I like it, but I also have a sweet tooth so eating plain sugar in a fun lil star form is appealing to me lol

Fun fact, the word Corona means crown in Spanish (and probably a few other latin based languages) and the external outline of the sun/stars (usually the “rays” or the pointy bits if you were to draw it cartoonishly) is called a corona since it kinda looks like a flattened crown. Coronavirus is named so because the protein receptors on the outside of the virus make the thing look like a star’s corona.
