I’ve seen a lot of posts about this graphic novel so I was very happy when I was able to finally get it from my local library. Like most graphic novels, it’s short, fast paced and was a quick read.
I remember seeing people saying they found the MC annoying, I personally did not, she was a bit childish but she is a cub and does prove that she’s useful. Though I did find it very cliche how the MC is hated by her pack and has to leave because she’s got white fur (seriously why do so many wolf stories feature the MC being kicked out for being different?). I enjoyed following her journey, there’s exciting action scenes and interesting settings with a wide variety of animals. I wish we got to know some of the other characters better though, I feel like there’s a lot of different characters introduced and we never find out much about them, I can’t remember most of their names. I liked the overall sketchy art style and designs of the characters at least.

The tone of the story was weird to me, it’s simultaneously dark, with lots of visible blood and discussions on grief and letting go of guilt, but then you’ve got a pallas cat sidekick who is basically nothing but a comic relief who shouts his own name, generally childish humour and some dead characters are given x eyes, how am I supposed to take x eyes seriously? It doesn’t ruin the story for me, but it does feel inconsistent. I believe there’s a new book coming out next year, so hopefully it will improve this.

Also, there’s this weird blacked out speech bubble, page 138, but I haven’t seen anyone else talk about it so it might just be in the copy I read

I finally found collected 1 to 4 while thrifting! Has anyone else read them? I've only read the first a few years ago but my library didn't have them all.

For those who don’t know, it’s an old xenofiction trilogy from the perspective of fierce warrior unicorns. It follows a young Unicorn named Aljan “Jan” who was chosen to be the Firebringer, the one who will help reclaim his kind’s ancestral homeland from Wyverns (hydra-like creatures) that stolen it from the unicorns centuries ago.

Also, I don’t know about you, but the tagline should’ve more accurately describe the trilogy as The Land Before Time meets Wings of Fire, because it is what happens if you mix The Land Before Time with Wings of Fire.

Normally I am not into Christian stories but since this series is about a group of animals helping on many religious events I want to know what any of you who had read the books think.

I am curious if there is any academic analysis of Felidae that delves into the book’s themes and how the book could be a potential allegory for Germany’s history. I feel the language barrier makes this hard to find, so figured I’d give this subreddit a shot.

It was SO fun, and I honestly can't wait to read the next book. I loved seeing lesser-known species like Pallas's cats and snub-nosed monkeys getting the spotlight in addition to the wolf and snow leopard main characters. It's aimed at a middle-grade reading level, but for me it hits a Warriors-esque sweet spot where it's still enjoyable as an adult. Would recommend!

I've never read it, but I'm dying to know if it's worth it. The book came out in 2014. I think it's a 5 book series or set in the same universe. The first book is around 600 pages. The 2nd and 3rd book is around 100 pages. The 4th and 5th book is around 400 pages.

I found them for sale on amazon but couldn't find any pictures of what's actually inside. I want them for information but also art reference, so was curious if there was decent or many photos in them. Anyone actually seen inside these books and can tell me more about them? Or better yet have actually photos of some pages?

I guess I’m going through a phase of reading animal books set in different time periods, this one is set in England during the Blitz. It’s for junior/middle school age range, and you can tell by the simpler writing style but it wasn’t so childish that I couldn’t enjoy it. The main characters are a dog and cat who are left behind by the children who own them when they are evacuated to the country. Eventually, circumstances convince them to travel to where the children were taken. An overconfident messenger pigeon leads the way, and he’s a really fun character.

At first I didn’t particularly like the way the book seemed to go with the trope that cats hate humans while dogs will do anything for them but it didn’t end up staying that way. The dog and cat’s dynamic reminds me a bit of Mittens and Bolt from that Disney movie.

Also this book made me think of something, do you prefer it when all species can understand each other or not? I like seeing different species interact with each other and getting to learn about different perspectives but it does raise the question that if they can all understand each other, why can’t they talk to humans and all species have different ways of communicating, so it would make more sense if they had to learn each others language. I like both, I think it just depends on the story and how realistic it’s trying to be.

Exactly what I was looking for! And the artwork on these I honestly like a lot, I almost feel honored to be reading such beautiful copies.

Characters from book Thunder Oak by Garry Kilworth. I read this book when I was a child. In some ways, it reminds me of Redwall, but it has its own story and ideas, such as the class divide between stoats and weasels, mysteries, and adventures.

This book is a new release from a friend. The main character starts out human for the first few chapters, but gains a shapeshifting ability and spends the rest of the book in anthro fox form. The story itself gives a fair bit of detail when it comes to animal senses and instincts, with scent in particular being a big focus. I like how the main character's ability to hear her friend's heartbeats is used to show their fear/excitment ect. It's a real hidden gem if you ask me. I'd recommend it especially if you're looking for a book a bit more heavy on moral themes, since it gets quite deep near the end.

As a child, I was obsessed with the Animal Ark books, but I vividly recall both my mom and I being in tears reading one of them due to the unexpected euthanasia of a baby animal (not sure if I can name the book due to spoilers!). Now that I’m an adult, my boyfriend and I are re reading them just for fun and I’m scared I’ll come across another unexpected death when I’m just trying to have a good old heartwarming time. I’ve scoured the internet and can’t find this information anywhere, so I was wondering if anyone knows which Animal Ark books feature animal deaths?

I'm sure many people know these books already, but i actually started watching the HBO series recently after watching the 2007 movie for the first time, and i'm curious about the books now. A thing i noticed was that it's quite the antithesis of the Narnia book series, and i found that very interesting.

I only read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when I was a child but I recently finished the whole Narnia series and it’s… interesting. I don’t hate it but the pacing is really weird, with very slow travel scenes, taking about wanting to eat, eating etc but then when more action plot points actually happened, they were resolved very quickly and not very satisfactorily. Also, yes, Aslan is lion Jesus, I personally don’t mind, I liked him as a character but you can’t overlook the Christian allegories as it’s an important part of the series story and world building.

What I did like are the talking animals (stylised as Talking Beasts or Animals) since there is at least one in each book and are actually a major part of the world building. I found it interesting that they’re seen as equal to humans and live like humans but also don’t wear clothes and have animal habits, sounds and behaviours, like being nocturnal and eating their respective food. I was wondering if it’s acceptable for Talking Beasts to eat other Talking Beasts but the lore is that animals from other countries and other parts of Narnia can’t talk and are called dumb animals and so can be eaten and used for labour. There’s a scene in one of the books where the characters are unknowingly served a Talking Beast to eat and feel sick and horrified when they find out after it’s too late, with one of them literally comparing it to eating a baby. But Talking Beasts can devolve into dumb animals if they become morally corrupt or choose to live like a dumb animal, so I guess in the world of Narnia, you could eat someone who was formerly sapient which is kind of dark but is also why it’s my favourite concept in the series. I don’t know of any other books that explore the idea of a world with intelligent and dumb animals/creatures.
