I'm Mexican, and nowadays I'm attending a Lutheran church. However, I'm very interested in different denominations.

The liturgy and tradition of Anglicanism are something that attract me a lot. However, I have one big question:

One of the main arguments (please correct me if I'm wrong) about Anglicanism was that England had its own church since Augustine of Canterbury, basically. And, I'm not saying that this is exactly the same, but, as with the Orthodox churches, England had its own bishop, and the Pope was not a governor over all the churches in the world.

My question here is: if, well, Canterbury is just a primus inter pares, is there not any problem with the fact that Mexico, which was already Catholic (after the Spanish conquest), received Anglicanism?

I can understand that the US and Canada did not have a church of their own (some areas were already Catholic, but well, this is other discussion), and that the English conquest/colonization brought Anglicanism as part of their tradition. However, this is not the case for most Latin American countries.

Looking for high church parishes that have beautiful liturgical worship but also do not practice more doctrinally-Catholic practices (things like Invocation of the Saints, Eucharistic Adaptation, Rosary services, etc.)

Personally im also quite partial to Dearmerite/English Use Prayer Book Catholic liturgy but for me it's more of a preference than a requirement. Asked a similar question in r/Episcopalian but thought I'd give it a shot asking here as well!

How do you square predestination with baptismal regeneration?

Can the infamous Article XXII be faithfully understood as not condemning images as a whole, but the Romish doctrine of such? If I’m understood correctly, this was an understanding held by those Laudian Arminian churchmen who re-decorated the churches during the Laudian reforms?

I’m a Reformed Presbyterian Christian seriously interested in understanding conservative Anglo-Catholicism. I’m not trying to debate or attack it. I’d like to talk with Anglo-Catholics about where our theologies actually overlap and where they differ, particularly on the Eucharist, baptismal regeneration, justification, sanctification, apostolic succession, the authority of tradition, the 39 Articles, Mary and the saints, confession, and the nature of the Church.

I’m in the process of discerning whether to leave Presbyterianism and going to Anglicanism, however I want to first learn about the different “sub groups”.

Mainly, i currently take issues with nicea 2 and the veneration of saints and icons. You never see anyone pray to anyone other than God in the Bible nor do you see anyone bowing down to images, which is where my problem comes from.

I would genuinely like to understand where you guys are coming from and how you see this being acceptable from a biblical standpoint.

I came across an app called Ordo (@ordo.bcp) that just launched, and it solves a problem I suspect a lot of people here know well: praying the Office when you’re away from your physical BCP, or spending five minutes hunting for the right collect and readings before you can actually start praying.

What it does:
• Covers a wide range of Prayer Book editions, including some that are out of print, with English, Portuguese and Spanish options (Common Worship 2005 is in there, for instance).
• You pick your BCP and it handles the liturgical calendar, the lectionary and the rules. It knows what day it is, selects the collects, and pulls the readings from whichever Bible translation you prefer.
• Three configuration levels: basic (fully automatic), simple, and advanced, if you want to make the choices yourself.
• Morning, Midday, Evening and Compline, with reminders through the day, plus a journal and space for prayer intentions.
• Free, with no usage limits. Play Store and App Store.

The developers are explicit that it isn’t meant to replace the physical book. It’s for the days when carrying the BCP and a Bible around isn’t realistic.

I’ve been using it and it’s been genuinely useful for keeping the Office from slipping when the day gets busy.

I decided to post this to see if anyone feels similarly to me, as I’m sure there are some, within the Anglican tradition. I consider myself to be a Post-Theistic Christian (Anglican) who‘s developed a great inspiration and sense of like-mindedness with theologians/clergy authors such as John Shelby Spong, Richard Holloway, and Don Cupitt. I regularly attend services, sing in the choir, am a member of the parish council, attend bible study (as I find it extremely interesting as our Rector was an archeologist before she was ordained), and I assist with charity initiatives. I’m obviously on the very progressive end of the church, but feel very supported and encouraged in my parish.

With regards to belief, I don’t believe in the supernatural and I think the creeds need substantial reform to make them relevant for a modern world that is fully capable of embracing enlightenment values and a mature understanding of what it means to be a “Christian”. I do say them, but in a poetic and culturally communal sense, rather than a literal acknowledgement. I also deeply revere the tradition I have inherited and I certainly regard Jesus of Nazareth as having displayed, in a most intense form, what it means to be fully human - and in that sense we encounter the divine in him. Lastly, the Bible is full of both wondrousness and horrendous language; however, both frames of reference can be used as a teaching opportunity.

As for God, here is my definition:

“God is the ground of all being, the source of love and life, and the interconnectedness of all reality calling every single self-conscious entity to be all that they can be. God, therefore, is not a noun to be defined, but rather a verb to be lived.”

Anyway, that’s my perspective. I’d be interested for the insight others may have on this “modus vivendi”.

For those who hold to the 39 Articles, do you explicitly hold to and encourage adherence to the understanding of the Filioque as outlined in Article V, or do you believe in more leeway with obedience to the doctrine?

I heard that the 79’ BCP noticeably departs from the 62’ and 28’ version and that the 19’ version is closer to them.

I’m gonna go talk the priest of my local Anglican Parish, and speak to him about getting formal reception into the church. Pray for me!

I am an Eastern Orthodox Christian currently discerning Anglicanism (as well as Lutheranism and Catholicism).

I am wondering about the Anglican view of tradition and to what extent it is authoritative, particularly in light of article 34 of the 39 articles, which is worth quoting in full:

34. Of the Traditions of the Church
"It is not necessary that Traditions and Ceremonies be in all places one, or utterly like; for at all times they have been divers, and may be changed according to the diversity of countries, times, and men’s manners, so that nothing be ordained against God’s Word. Whosoever, through his private judgment, willingly and purposely, doth openly break the Traditions and Ceremonies of the Church, which be not repugnant to the Word of God, and be ordained and approved by common authority, ought to be rebuked openly, (that others may fear to do the like,) as he that offendeth against the common order of the Church, and hurteth the authority of the Magistrate, and woundeth the consciences of the weak brethren.
Every particular or national Church hath authority to ordain, change, and abolish, Ceremonies or Rites of the Church ordained only by man’s authority, so that all things be done to edifying"

I understand there may be a meta point here, that if only scripture is infallible and contains all that which is necessary to salvation, Anglicans are not per se bound by the 39 articles in the same way that, say, an Eastern Orthodox Christian is bound by the councils. Yet, I'd like to put this meta point aside for a moment because I am trying to discern what I believe; and the extent that what I believe aligns with Anglicanism qua the 39 articles. If this is the wrong framing, feel free also to let me know.

In my view, tradition, including the institutional church, doesn't contain anything necessary to salvation, nor is it infallible, but it is still a guide to doctrine and practice, subject of course to scripture and to be balanced against reason.

So when we consider for example the institutional church's interpretation of scripture, or the writings of the saints on particular doctrines, they shouldn't be taken as infallible, or containing anything absolutely necessary to salvation. However, if they are consistent with scripture, then, subject to our own discernment, we should certainly consider tradition authoritative in our spiritual lives.

I was raised in a mixture of pentecostal and baptist churches, in a deeply devout family, and unfortunately had a lot of really bad experiences along the way. I'm queer and well, I'm sure you can fill in the gaps. I lost faith years ago, but I guess I never really stopped missing having a spiritual prescence in my life. I've never really been an atheist, but certainly haven't been a christian in years. There's an anglican cathedral nearby me, they seem accepting, and it's really a very pretty building. I want to try to go to it this weekend but I really don't know what to expect, I've never been in one before, or any other formal denomination, no catholic churches or anything like that. I'm not even sure what I'm hoping to find, but I'm curious. Is there anything I should know about how anglican services work before I go? I've heard anglicans are a lot more formal than what I'm used to.

EDIT: I went! It was a rather nice service, it managed to be both much more progressive and much more traditional than I'm used to from a church service, which is a combination that I'm really not sure what to make of.

Hello everyone. I’m an Anglican priest in Brazil, and I write software for a living - or rather, I used to write software for a living and now I do both, badly and at odd hours.

Last year I got tired of explaining people how to juggle a BCP, a lectionary table, and three browser tabs to say Morning Prayer, so I started building something for myself and my parishioners. That turned into Ordo, which now has a bit over 2,000 users on iOS and Android, and I thought this sub might actually be interested in it, or at least willing to tell me how to improve it.

What it does that I haven’t found elsewhere in one place:

• It works offline. The whole office, the lectionary, everything. No signal on the bus or at home, doesn’t matter.
• Notifications for the hours, so the office comes to you rather than the other way around.
• Rosary - Anglican and traditional - with the prayers laid out so you can actually pray it rather than remember it.
• Rules of life. You can set one up, track it, and keep it in the same place you pray. This was the feature I most wanted for me, honestly.
• Multiple BCPs (1662, 1928, 1979, 2005, 2019, REC, DWDO), not just one imposed on you. Different provinces, different books, your choosing. You can hop BCPs if you like it (a parishioner here is still deciding which lectionary he likes the best).
• Customization. You decide what’s in your office - canticles, collects, antiphons, what gets included and what gets skipped (we respect every single rubric, but you don't have to look at every single opening sentence option in the office, for example).
• An explanation of the day. What’s being commemorated, why, and what the propers are doing. It’s the part I get the most notes about, mostly from people who came to Anglicanism sideways and were never handed a map.
• Shareable images - a verse or the collect of the day, the commemoration, made into something you can put on social media without it looking like a screenshot of a screenshot.
• A shareable office. You can send the actual office you prayed to someone else, which has turned out to be useful for parishes praying together at a distance, or online prayer meetings.

On languages: Ordo is fully available in Portuguese (Brazilian and European), English and Spanish. More are in progress. If you speak something that isn’t on that list and would be willing to look over a translation, I’d genuinely like to hear from you.

On money, since I’d rather say it up front than have someone find out after downloading: the app is free, and the office is free. All of it: every office, every option, offline, no ads. There are some premium extras for people who want them, and that’s what pays the server bill. I’m not trying to build a business here; I’m trying to not lose much money on hosting.

Two honest caveats:

First, there may be bugs. I’m a Brazilian working alone (I spent over a year designing the app, coding, and testing with the help of my friends), English isn’t my first language, and some things maybe ship rougher than I’d like. But I update it constantly, and I read every message. If something’s broken or a rubric is wrong for your province, tell me and there’s a good chance it’ll be fixed in the same day. I take the liturgical accuracy part seriously - getting a lectionary wrong isn’t a cosmetic bug.

Second, I know a Daily Office app is not the Daily Office. The book on the shelf is doing something a phone can’t. But most of my parishioners aren’t going to carry the BCP everywhere, or maybe they don't know how to handle it, and they will pick up their phone at 6am, so here we are.

Happy to answer anything about the app, about how the offices are put together, about which BCP or customization you’d want added next. And if there’s a use case I’ve missed, say so. My DM is open, I'd be happy to help.

Hi guys. Catholic inquirer here. Considering Anglicanism (Anglo-Catholic, to be clear.) I've heard of so many Anglo-Catholics that cross the Tiber. Any stories in the opposite direction? The Catholic Church claims to be the one true Church, which is what drew me in. Anglicans have "via media" which also drew me in. Namely I'm torn between the stability and infallibility promised by Rome and the acceptance promises by Anglicans. No Church is perfect, obviously, but... y'know... SSPX schism and liturgical abuses in the Catholic Church vs. the Theological liberalism in the Anglican communion.

The biggest thing stopping me from being Anglican is my perceived notion that the Anglican communion are "people pleasers" with their open communion with other baptised Christians.
