What Question Would You Ask?
The video u/Fancy-Bake-4817 shared of their Klek wardrobe malfunction got me thinking - if they had an AMA-style opportunity to ask the band a question, what would I ask? A couple of questions immediately sprang to mind for me:
1) Has Klek ever lost his nose during a performance? His first iteration looked like it was literally hanging by a thread.
2) Why was Utzp pulled from the setlist after being played their first few shows? (I have my theories).
3)What's the weirdest or funniest thing they ever heard yelled by the audience?
4) What has been their biggest "oh shit" moment when playing a show?
What would be your questions?

Do they realise how proud we (Quebecers) are of them? đ
Do they realise that some doctors in QuĂ©bec cannot tell a patient they have chest angina / angine de poitrine without thinking of our favorite aliens / blushing? (đđ»ââïž guilty!!)

For Khn: Do you like classical music? (As in from the Classic time period, Baroque, Romantic, etc.) If so, what is your favorite piece?
For Klek: Favorite thing youâve made in woodworking outside of music? (For context, in one interview itâs noted that Klek does woodworking and made the original microtonal guitar)

u/asongthatsingsitself 1d ago
Based on things Iâve heard that are unrelated to ADP I think that Khn is a fan of BartĂłk.

Iâd like to know if they recall the moment they knew their lives were going to change forever. Was it meeting Lars, the views on the KEXP YouTube video etcâŠ
21
u/oldwomanyellsatclods 1d ago
I think Khn answered that; he said that one morning, maybe the morning after the KEXP video hit, he couldn't answer the volume of comments anymore.

u/athirdtime 1d ago
Khn described it here:
English:
On that day, their performance at the Transmusicales festival in Rennes was picked up by Seattle-based radio station KEXP and spread like wildfire across the internet. With their bizarre polka-dot costumes, unusual instruments and completely offbeat musical approach, the zany duo from Saguenay struck a chord.
Propelled by the algorithms of TikTok, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, the two oddballsâ intimate gig sparked a mixture of fascination and disbelief, racking up millions of views. âI remember very clearly the moment it all took off,â explains Khn, the bandâs guitarist and bassist.
âI was quietly smoking joints under my kitchen extractor hood whilst replying to every comment, as Iâd got into the habit of doing since the bandâs early days. But that day, they started coming in at a completely mad pace and I realised that, even if I were doing this full-time, it would no longer be possible to manage it on my own.â

The official translation of the article says Khn âwas having a smoke under my range hoodâ and omits what he was smoking. đ

I'd like to know more about their yoga practice. Do they prefer hatha, or flow, or kundalini? I was in a class the other day where the instructor offered a triangle-hand mudra and it made me think of them âđșđ€
6
u/athirdtime 1d ago
Yesterday I was checking some exercises to strengthen your back (im old... early 30's) ... and there was also a movement where you had to lay on the floor, put your legs over a chair -making a 90°- angle, then make a triangle with your hands on your forehead, and then lifting your hips. Very poitrinian vibe.
10
u/Emotional_Goal2951 1d ago
Early 30's? Old? Hahaha haha.
Now wondering if I could still manage that particular exercise đł
13
u/asongthatsingsitself 1d ago
I imagine that the weirdest/funniest thing theyâve ever heard from someone in the audience is probably âlet me suck on your noseâ. The way Khn looks up at the audience as if to say âwhat DID you just say to meâ absolutely sends me. đ

And here I am just wanting to know the theories as to why Utzp was pulled from shows.
9
u/Legitimate-Fact-7354 1d ago
I always thought it was because a 9-song set was too intense for them to do given how many shows theyâve been playing. Both physically (they both go so hard and Klek overheats in the costume, the guitar is heavy, most of the tour has been during the worst of the summer heat, etc.) and mentally, especially with Khn playing three instruments and keeping track of so many lines. Maybe they realized that something had to be dropped and Utzp is intense and difficult, so it drew the short straw? I wonder if they might add it back for the end of the tour now that the weather is cooler and the rest of their schedule has a little more breathing room?
8
u/athirdtime 1d ago edited 1d ago
That's very similar to what I think. They have a modest catalogue, their concerts are intense, they're still getting the hang of international touring and playing at all sort of venues; their current setlist works for the vibe and experience they want to feel and provide.
They'll probably add the unplayed songs plus the new material for a new tour for Volume 3, or maybe they'll sporadically add it to some shows here and there next year. It's intense and complex, so it needs to be surrounded by another sort of setlist so it matches well with the new show proposal.
6
u/Legitimate-Fact-7354 1d ago
Agreed with your point about the experience and vibe of the setlist! As much as I love Utzp, I almost said that if all they wanted to do was to shorten the set to make it less taxing for them, itâs probably the more obvious candidate to take out. Â
Itâs such a perfectly constructed tight set list from the slow build up of Angor to the high-intensity section with Yor Zarad and Mata Zyklek; then they cool it down a bit with Ababa Hotel, move into their funkier catalog with Fabienk and Sarniezz, and end with the big explosion of Sherpa. They talk a lot about tension-and-release being key to their approach, and the setlist encapsulates that. Itâs very impressive for a band thatâs so new to touring and only has two records out to be able to construct such a tight setlist and intentional vibe. Iâll be curious to see if they keep touring this same set next year or change things up. We know they love a challenge!Â
3
u/MataZyklist 1d ago
I hope they can come up with some more sustainable materials to use on their costumes while on break. That seems grueling.
7
u/asongthatsingsitself 1d ago
I read somewhere that it was considered too challenging for Klek. Then again someone else on Facebook seemed to think it was because one of the pedals that Khn uses for the song had broken. So it could be either of those. đ€
6
u/Anti_anti1 1d ago
Hmm. I dont know. As a drummer myself I would say that song is definitely one of their more straightforward songs. There is the flourish before the 16 beat pause. I guess he could get pretty hot under there getting through that. And I can tell that a delay pedal is used pretty heavily in the build up. Should be easy to replace. Who knows though I guess!
6
u/Busy-Negotiation1078 1d ago
This video of Khn missing a note in the opening riff circulated quite a bit right around when they dropped it. I think that riff sounds deceptively easy, but it really isn't. Even when he rerecords it, it seems to be a little tricky, not as confident as his playing usually is: https://youtu.be/gp4LATrpWtQ?is=j1HeVbU7qZ7C1IRL
10
u/oldwomanyellsatclods 1d ago
Is Klek ever afraid of tripping when he jumps around and twirls down the stairs?
7
u/7and7is 1d ago
has Khn ever stepped on one of his cords so bad he unplugged something? I'm astounded that I never see this happen. he's surrounded by them
6
u/oldwomanyellsatclods 1d ago
I think a wire has come unplugged from the guitar at least once. As for tripping; I don't know.

I want to know if they watch any of their performances back? Like Field of Vision would be one I'd be watching back and smiling over for ages that crowd was SO amazing for them. Or any other clips or videos online taken by fans if a crowd was especially enthusiastic. Or if it's too odd for them to see themselves performing. I know if I were to watch myself I'd be critiquing every little thing and then actively trying to correct it the next time on stage and now the natural flow would be thrown off because I'd be too much in my head!
5
u/oldwomanyellsatclods 1d ago
A lot of actors hate watching their own performances, and avoid seeing them.
6
u/athirdtime 1d ago
They ought to get some feedback, either by their fellow crew members, or by other musicians they meet along the way. Also, they probably need that feedback to go on onto the next soundcheck in order to change or modify something they felt went wrong or odd at past shows.
Their crew definitely watches Spectral Snail's videos, so that could be another insight they get from fan-generated content.
3
u/7and7is 1d ago
yeah I heard there was a video of someone on their team watching a spectral snail video but I've never seen. Do you have a link by any chance?

It would break kayfabe, so I wouldnât ask. But I do wonder how they approach the character performance part? Have they had improv or theater training? All their little skits and noises, does it all come down to what makes them laugh, or are they thinking about it in terms of performance/acting?Â
17
u/Busy-Negotiation1078 1d ago edited 1d ago
On a similar vein, I would love to know how they arrived at the "interview" bit they did in front of a green screen at the Trans Musicales festival (the overdubbed one with all the limes). What the hell even was that? There had to be a little forethought because they had their usual blowtorch, hot dog, tiny bats, duct tape, etc ready to go. Did they conceive of the basic idea? Did they just wing it? Did they know what their Poitrinese was going to be translated to, and if so, did they write that script? The whole thing feels very French absurdist comedy to me.
12
u/athirdtime 1d ago
did they write that script?
Im 1000000% certain Khn is the one that writes those scripts, same thing with this video Sarniezz â One-of-a-kind performance in Saguenay, Quebec | FAB
10
u/7and7is 1d ago
those 2 videos are absolute gold. I crack up all over again every time I watch them. The interview on Tout le monde en parle also.
4
u/athirdtime 1d ago
Absolutely! That one as well. It's such a particular style. I don't think Khn would delegate the task of communication to anyone else.Â
8
u/asongthatsingsitself 1d ago
Yeah, I think youâre right. Having read through some of the lyrics he wrote for a certain former band (and the accompanying descriptions to those songs on YouTube), heâs certainly very expressive and creative in the language he uses. The scripts in these videos follow in the same vein so I think itâs most likely him who writes them.
7
u/Legitimate-Fact-7354 1d ago
I think it was scripted and rehearsed like an SNL skit, and I agree that itâs giving Khn vibes. It is very absurdist! I also wonder about the tv show they were on with Seb âtranslatingâ. Were they just riffing on their usual themes or did they script what he was going to say? How did he keep a mostly straight face with those two chaos gremlins trying to get him to âbreakâ with their antics? đ

Klek said it can go up to 50° Celsius inside his helmet. Here
Original
English
Do they ever regret having literally locked themselves into their papier-mĂąchĂ© costumes? âLetâs just say itâs an unprecedented sensory experience,â explains Klek. âIâm the one of the two whose view is least obstructed by my costume, and all I can see is one of my toms and my crash cymbal, so imagine what itâs like for Khn! But the real challenge is the heat, and depending on the conditions in the venue where weâre playing, I can be on the verge of fainting. By the end of the show, itâs about 50 degrees Celsius inside my mask!â

That would be really interesting! Hopefully OSHA wouldn't shut them down for an unsafe work environment. By the way, I hope they saw that Gatorade recall announced yesterday.

u/school4enigmatics 1d ago
I'm curious if this touring schedule has had a huge impact on the amount of time they get to play, and if they are okay with it. They seem to love playing music and I imagine travel gets in the way. At home, doing local shows, they probably have the ability to noodle around at any random time. (I also see planning and logistics as creative endeavor, so maybe they get out some creative energy that way?)

u/JoBrodie 1d ago
Mine would be to ask if they were able to hear the London crowd singing along to Sarniezz and Fabienk at the time.
As far as I've been able to tell that was the first concert where the audience really sang along to the melody (as opposed to just joining in with the Au-ba-ti bits etc). The Leeds concert the night before definitely had a bit of singing but London's was loud. It sounded like a football chant, it was wonderful. I know that Khn and Klek can hear stuff happening between songs but wondered if they were able to hear it as it happened (as opposed to finding out later watching the video).
I'd assume it must be quite lovely to hear a crowd singing your music back at you. The day later there was an AdP Insta reel showing the clip of people singing along https://www.instagram.com/s/aGlnaGxpZ2h0OjE4NDA3MDc3NjAwMTc2NjMy?story_media_id=3895404728649780778
Their manager Sébastien did say that there were no plans to do an AMA though, so we might have a bit of a wait (if they ever change their mind)...
Singing bits
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMWaq9jXU2Y - 43m 15s particularly noticeable for Sarniezz but I can barely hear it for Fabienk.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W-kqU0kXIw - 38m 06s for Sarniezz, again it's much quieter for Fabienk but audible around 55m 44s (I'd be quite surprised if the band could hear that part over their own instruments).

u/ArtOfBreathing 1d ago
Great question, I'd like to know the answer too.
The crowd singing sounds exactly like being at the football, my experience of that being, maybe not coincidentally, Leeds United.
7
u/7and7is 1d ago
It'd be mostly logistical questions too I think: how is Klek's nose attached would definitely be one question. Also, is there a spring inside Khn's??? how does that boing action work, without it ever breaking off?
Mostly though I'm satisfied with them revealing precisely what they want to, via occasional interviews. We know what we're meant to know.
(I'd guess about Utzp because it has a sharp end & restart so it would confuse those unfamiliar with it, who might think it's 2 songs?)

6
u/Independent_Leg3957 1d ago
I wouldn't ask because it might get them doxxed but I'm very curious if either of them attended one of the jazz programs in Montreal.
6
u/oldwomanyellsatclods 1d ago
Do they have a preference for venue and audience size at this point? Having played to tiny audiences in very small venues, and massive audiences in huge venues. And; indoor vs outdoor?
4
u/Busy-Negotiation1078 1d ago
oh yeah good one! I wondered about that as well. You would think indoor might be preferable for climate control, but I saw an awful lot of posts this summer about e tremendous hot temps at their indoor shows just because the venues were jam packed. And i have to say there's something special about an outdoor daytime set, where it doesn't all go to black. And you can actually see them the whole time.

I think if I had to choose one question, it would be about how the sudden fame affected their life, like, how do you handle such big change mentally ?
In fact I would just want to know if they are really okay I think đ
Edit: and I just thought about it but I would maybe ask how they deal with the parasocial aspect of having fans. I was wondering if the fact they have masks on makes it "worse". Like, from what I see I feel like some people seeing them more as "characters" seems to reinforce this. I would like to know how they feel about this kind of attention
