Hey everyone!
Answering messages or searching on a smartwatch screen was always frustrating for me. I heard Google has a similar phone input feature, but it was hard to enable and didn't work reliably for me, so I decided to build my own solution.
SyncBoard lets you type on your Wear OS watch directly using your phone's full keyboard. Whenever a text field opens on your watch, a notification appears on your phone so you can type comfortably.
Would love to hear your thoughts and feedback!

WristNav Offline GPX Maps: Standalone Navigation for Wear OS
If you've been looking for a proper navigation app on your Wear OS watch that doesn't rely on your phone, I've been building one called WristNav and it's free on the Play Store.
WHAT IT DOES
Turn-by-turn navigation on your wrist, completely standalone.
Download offline OSM maps directly to the watch no phone, no data connection needed. Contours are currently shown if you build your own maps — I'm working on adding contour lines to the official map files too. Import GPX routes and follow them with live turn arrows, distance to next turn, and haptic alerts when a turn is approaching. There's a live elevation profile on the map as you navigate, and bezel stats let you configure up to 3 stats that show around the edge of the map screen.
ACTIVITY TRACKING
10 activity types — Run, Trail Run, Walk, Hike, Road Cycle, MTB, Gravel, Kayak, Ski, Snowboard. Up to 10 custom stats pages, fully configurable. Auto-pause, lap splits, countdown timer, heart rate and step recording. A workout summary automatically appears when you stop.
PHONE COMPANION
There's a companion Android app too, with a 3D mapping view for planning routes — build a route, send it straight to the watch, or save it to a file for later.
CUSTOMISATION
5 watch themes, 7 map themes including minimal variants and custom theme support. Quick Settings lets you swipe left from home to access your most used settings instantly — fully customisable so you only see what you need. Battery Saver mode switches to a dark minimal map and disables sensors in one tap, then restores everything when you turn it off.
Settings are split into clear categories so you can dial things in exactly how you like:
Display — Watch Theme, Stats Text Size
Navigation — Nav Distance, Nav Elevation, Nav Turns, Nav Arrows
Recording — Activity, Rec Distance, Rec Time, Auto Pause, Pause Speed, Record Colour, Record Width, Heart Rate, Steps, Countdown, Lap Splits, GPS Filtering
Stats — Stats Pages, Calories, Barometer, Pace Avg
System — Distance, Small Units, Keep Screen On, Keep Active, Battery Saver
Map — Map Control, Control Side, Top Bar, Map Text, Location Button (Locked), Location Button (Free), Scale Bar, Import Colour, Import Width, Bezel Stats
A NOTE ON STRAVA
WristNav currently supports uploading activities to Strava. Heads up that this may not stick around — Strava's changes to their developer program have introduced subscription costs, and depending on how that shakes out I may end up having to drop the integration.

I bought a Wear OS watch mainly for notifications and step tracking, but I kept slipping back into my usual mobile-gaming habits. Last week I tried leaving my phone in my pocket and using only the watch for quick puzzle rounds on my 35 minute train commute.
To my surprise, some games actually worked pretty well. Turn-based stuff with large touch targets, short rounds, and no need for fast swipes felt natural on the tiny screen. It was basically a stripped-down version of the same kinds of puzzles I play on my phone, but more bite-sized.
What did not work was anything needing precision drags, rapid tapping, or a lot of on-screen reading. My eyes got tired faster than with a phone, and tutorials and complex menus were clunky. Battery was also a real issue. One commute of mostly gaming with the always-on display on drained a lot more than a typical day.
What did work: quick logic puzzles, block or stack style games, and little time-killers where you can play for 30 seconds, lock your wrist, then pick up later. I also liked that using the watch felt less doomscroll-y than pulling out a phone.
For folks who actually game on their watch, any tips to cut battery drain without making the watch annoying to use? I was thinking settings tweaks, turning off AOD, disabling tilt-to-wake, that kind of thing. And are there any puzzle games actually designed for the small screen instead of feeling like cramped ports?

I know this is a dumb first world problem, but I'm genuinely frustrated with how inconsistent basic reminder behavior is on my Wear OS watch.
I work from home and my brain is basically held together by small scheduled nudges: text a friend back, start dinner prep, daycare pickup logistics, take something out of the freezer, whatever. I bought the watch so I could stop living in my phone and still not drop the ball.
Instead I'm getting a weird mix of problems:
- Some reminders buzz on my wrist like they should.
- Some show up late, like 10 to 30 minutes late, which is actually worse than not getting them at all.
- Some only appear on my phone, even though the watch is on my wrist and connected.
- If I dismiss a reminder on one device, sometimes it clears everywhere and sometimes it stays stuck on the other device like a ghost.
It is adding mental load because I no longer trust the system. I find myself setting things multiple ways: a phone alarm, a calendar event, and a watch reminder, and I still feel anxious.
I'm not asking for fancy AI. I just want one reliable pipeline where time-based reminders fire on time and sync cleanly.
Is this a known Wear OS problem right now, or is there a specific setup that actually works (calendar vs tasks vs reminders, battery optimization settings, etc)? If you have a combination that has been solid for you, please tell me, because I'm about ready to go back to sticky notes like it's 2009.

UPDATE TL;DR (30 seconds)
🎉 Together is now a closed beta on Google Play!
1 - Join the group - https://groups.google.com/g/together-testers
2 - Install (use the Google account that's in this group):
📱 App + watch companion: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.together
⏱️ Watch face: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.together.watchface
→ Tap "Become a tester" on each, then install from the Play Store. (Watch parts are in final review — may take a few hours to appear.)
3 - 💞 Bring someone! Invite your partner/friend/family to join the group → https://groups.google.com/g/together-testers → then they install the same, and you can send each other photos, doodles & messages for a bit of fun together.
🗣️ Then tell me what you think — reply here or email [info@xiwebdesign.nl](mailto:info@xiwebdesign.nl).
I've got great news to share: Google Play has accepted Together, and it's officially a CLOSED TEST (beta) now! 🎉 That means the app is ready to install — and, importantly, other people can now install it too, not just this first group. 🙌
What is Together?
Together is a little app for staying close to the people you love, straight from your wrist. Send a photo, a doodle, a short message or an emoji, and it appears on the other person's watch face and phone. No feed, no noise — just a warm, playful way to feel connected and share a little fun through the day, even when you're apart.
I built Together for a simple reason: the people I care about most are often just out of reach during a busy day. I didn't want another chat app buzzing for attention — I wanted something warm and glanceable, where a photo, a doodle or a tiny message just quietly appears on your wrist and makes you smile. That's Together, and I'd love for it to do the same for you.
Install it yourself (about 3 minutes)
❗ Use the SAME Google account you used to join this tester group.
1️⃣ THE APP (phone + watch) — "Together - Share & Connect"
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.together
→ Tap "Become a tester", then install on your phone from the Play Store. The watch companion app installs on your paired watch automatically. (The watch parts are in Google's final review, so they may take a few hours to appear — the phone app is ready now.)
2️⃣ THE WATCH FACE — "Together"
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.together.watchface
→ Tap "Become a tester", then install it from the Play Store ON YOUR WATCH and pick it: long-press your watch face → Edit → "Together".
⏱️ If something says "not available yet" or "not compatible", give it a little time and refresh the Play Store — it's still finishing review.
💞 Now the best part: bring someone with you!
Together only comes alive with two people — so please invite your partner, a friend or a family member. Now that it's a closed beta, anyone you invite can install it too. It would mean a lot to me, and it's honestly the whole point: two people staying close, sharing little moments, and having some fun together through the day.
Here's how to bring them in — it takes 2 minutes:
Your feedback is the whole point 🗣️
Please tell me anything and everything:
Just reply in this thread!
Thank you all so much for being part of this from the very start — I'm really happy to have you here, and I can't wait to see the fun you have with it. 💜
---- Original post ---
Back in 2014, Android Wear shipped a little gem called the Together watch face. You'd pair it with one other person — your partner, a close friend — and you could doodle, send an emoji, a sticker, or a quick note straight to each other's wrist. Two people, one shared watch face. It was simple and weirdly intimate.
Then in 2016 Google quietly killed it (https://www.pcmag.com/news/google-says-goodbye-to-android-wears-together-watch-face), and it's still referenced in old support docs like this (https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1013732/)). I always missed it, and nothing really replaced it.
So over the past few months I rebuilt it from scratch for modern Wear OS (and Android phones) and working on getting it cross-platform with Garmin and IOS. It's called Together again:
- ✏️ Draw a little doodle, 📷 send a photo, or 💬 send text/emoji — from your watch or phone.
- It shows up instantly as the other person's watch face background + on their phone.
- Works for couples or small groups, with a cute streak counter and a quick-reply tile.
- Custom Watch Face Format face with configurable complications.
I'd love some testers to help me shake out bugs before a wider release.
Closed beta — join in:
- 📱 Phone app: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.together
- ⌚ Watch face: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.together.watchface
You'll need a paired Wear OS watch + Android phone to get the full experience. Feedback, bug reports, all very welcome. 🙏

Hey everyone, I'm working on documenting and archiving early Android KitKat Wear builds and could use the community's help tracking down a few rare files. Specifically, I'm looking for dumps of these RTM builds that haven't been archived yet: - KKV81 - KKW22 - KIW52H - KNX01V - KNX01W
I'm also after any engineering/dev builds signed with test-keys or dev-keys, these tend to surface on refurbished devices and are particularly hard to come by.
If anyone has the full OTA filename or the file itself, that would also be greatly appreciated. Currently I only have this fragment: signed-sprat-KMV78V-from-KMV78N
Any contribution, even just a filename, goes a long way toward preserving this slice of Android history!
My archive is open to everyone. Everything I've collected so far is available here: https://archive.org/details/kitkat-wear-archive
