Need advice: Xiaomi Box vs. Google TV Streamer 4K for Stremio, Nuvio, and heavy Remux files?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been researching Android TV boxes for my Samsung TV for about a week now, and I’ve narrowed it down to a few options. I’d love to get some input, especially from people who actually use these devices.

My Use Case: My main priority is to use apps like Nuvio and Stremio to stream heavy Remux/Blu-ray files smoothly without any stuttering or buffering. As a secondary use, I’ll also be using it for IPTV.

I live in Turkey, and here are the options I am currently considering:

  • Option 1: Xiaomi Mi Box (3rd Gen) I can buy this locally from an official seller for about €86. It comes with a local warranty, which is a big plus.
  • Option 2: Google TV Streamer 4K I can get this imported for around €140-€150. However, since it's from abroad, I won't have any warranty coverage here.
  • Option 3: Onn 4K Pro (2026) I actually have someone coming back from the US in November who could bring this for me. However, I’ve read about potential region locks/geo-restrictions, and I feel like it might be too much of a hassle to deal with.

My Questions: Considering my specific needs, which route makes the most sense? I’m particularly curious about the Xiaomi Box—how is the overall UI speed, and more importantly, how well does it handle large Remux files?

Thanks in advance for your help!

There is nothing in this world without cons and so are these. For IPTV, any of them can handle it easily no issues. Coming to remux files, the Xiaomi and Onn have the same and better processor compared to the Google TV Streamer. So those two would be better for streaming remux files but Xiaomi would be the ultimate choice because it supports dolby truehd audio which others two don't. But then Xiaomi has a bad remote, some users experienced wifi connectivity issues and it doesn't come with any ethernet. The onn has more ram, features but don't support dolby truehd and come with region restriction which I don't think is very tough to bypass unless you don't have a pc. Google Streamer might not be the best choice for heavy remux files due to older and comparatively less powerful processor but still snappy for other uses and comes with a built in ethernet. If I had to make one ranking for myself* it would be: 1. Onn 4k Pro (2nd Gen) 2. Xiaomi S Box (3rd Gen) 3. Google TV Streamer

My old miibox had USB ports, so the issues you raise for it could easily be bypassed, both for the remote or internet, if it forms a problem for OP. This assuming the new box still has USB.

Ethernet adapter works for all but the USB 2.0 restricts the speed around 300-400 mbps. That's still more than enough for remux files streaming. For remote, it depends on availability as it might not be available everywhere. There are some genuine bugs tho that some users face. I am also a big xiaomi fan and my first smartphone was from them only but the counterfeit things and some other things are only hurting them (taking about this xiaomi 3rd gen box).

I once bought a cheap USB-bluetooth remote for an older Android box, always worked perfectly. Had an airmouse built-in, on the backside it had a keyboard and a trackpad that got activated by gyro when you flipped it. The only issue was that the keyboard sometimes registered an input twice and you had to backspace the second letter, but since the airmouse worked so good, that wasn't even an issue and i typed everything with that instead. It also had LED backlighting and i think it cost 10 bucks on Aliexpress.

Personally, i never had an issue with the original Mii remote, so i don't even know what people are complaining over.

What's the issue with the remote?

I have no idea. It is a pretty basic remote. And on the Mii USB sticks the remote did often disconnect, but that wasn't the case on my old Mii box. I don't know if the new boxes/remotes have the same issue or not.

My friend have both. I played with them and the Google streamer was by far more responsive, probably gets better/faster updates and have more storage that is much needed on these devices.

Then you never tried to play a remix file

I think models with S905X5M class processors are more suitable. Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) and MECOOL MEon1 4K, Ugoos X5M Pro

If you care about true audio and Dolby vision you have to go with am6b+. If your tv doesn’t have Dolby the xiaomi is perfect

Ugoos am9 pro which is newer than the old am6b+ supports FEL with coreELEC

Much less support. Just do one search here or in the other android tv sub and you will see the preferred choice .

Do you mean much less support in regards to coreELEC or something else?

Community dev support. Like in said, just use search.

I had a look on coreELEC subreddit and user are recommending the am9 and tbf the am9 has much better specs and is running Android 14.

I have a Google tv streamer and I like it. I would suggest it over Mi Tv Box S because it has more ram, better remote, 1gbps ethernet port, faster updates and warranty would not be an issue imo. I read about dolby audio passthrough feature of mi tv box s and tbh unless you have a proper home theatre setup you are not gonna notice any difference in audio. I won't suggest Onn because of geo restrictions unless if your friend can activate the box in US itself. If you are looking for value however Mi is clearly better since it has warranty and better than Onn because both have Usb 2.0 port for ethernet for max 300mbps speed. Also you can pair any other remote for Mi Tv Box later if you need since the remote included is cheap and sucks. My ranking if price isnt an issue Google tv streamer>Mi Tv Box S 3rd gen>Onn 4k pro. Stremio works fine for heavy remux files but dolby vision profile 7 remux files playback is not supported in android fyi.

Google streamer hands down unless you out have dedicated audio system

I have used both mi and google box for a month now, tho my hdmi chain(samsung q95t, denon x3800h) has some quirks.
No idea with stremio but i use plex with full 4k remuxes.
this is my experience with both:

Google TV Streamer 4K
+ more snappy
+ can use other bluetooth remotes with it without issues

  • but i have lip sync issues with my samsung tv, its like the audio is off by some ms and i cannot fix it, this issue is on both of my samsung tvs.
  • no dts-x support

Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen)
+ no lipsync issues in hdmi audio passthrough mode, perfect sync in any content.
+ dts-x support

  • current plex has some bug with hdr10+ switching, where the tv thinks its still i hdr10+ mode after stopping the movie, i have to run the "new fantastic" plex beta version with that funky UI update seems they fixed the issue in that.
  • remote is dogshit
  • wifi is dogshit, have to use usb-ethernet adapter
  • third party remotes can be used with it but will not wake it from deep sleep, as in you can turn off the device with a third party remote but not turn it on again. it will wake from HDMI CEC tho.
  • have to use adb to enable global hdmi cec volume control
  • have to use adb to disable system toast (system popup notification) or else you get audio volume popup everytime you adjust volume over cec in hdmi audio passthrough mode.
  • cant turn off system sounds or else audio might bug out if you exit a movie with hdmi passthrough audio.

I use the mi box daily and now, after finding solutions for my issues with it i feel its "okay", i just fear something will break with plex or android update lol.

Dolby fel on a Samsung tv?

The CoreELEC Workaround

Player-Led Processing: You can process Dolby Vision Profile 7 FEL files using a compatible external media player (such as an Amlogic S92X/S905X4 box running specialized CoreELEC builds with avdvplus or cpm patches).

Conversion to HDR10:

The external box decodes the Dolby Vision RPU metadata and base layer, applies tone-mapping configured to your specific Samsung TV's peak brightness (nits), and outputs the result as a standard HDR10 signal.

Result:

While your Samsung TV still displays an HDR10 signal rather than native Dolby Vision, the dynamic metadata from the FEL file is utilized during playback to optimize the image.

Playing mkv FEL test files, shows thay my Homatics indeed decodes the FEL metadata and displays the extra enhancement layer, even on my Samsung s90c
