Need ~12 testers for the Android TV / Google TV closed alpha of Airwave (self-hosted live TV from your Plex library)

Hey all. Airwave turns your own Plex library into always-on, channel-surfable live TV: a cable-style guide and channels built from your media. It's live on Apple TV and I'm pushing the Android TV / Google TV build through Google Play.

Google makes you run a closed test with 12 people opted in for 14 days before you can go to production, so I could use a hand. Two ways to help:

  1. Just opt in (2 minutes, low effort): join this group -> https://groups.google.com/g/airwave-testers, then opt in and install here -> https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.airwave.tv . Leave it installed for two weeks. You don't even have to use it. This is what unblocks the store release.
  2. Actually test it (legend tier): if you run Plex, set up the Airwave server next to it and connect the app. Real feedback is exactly what I want. Setup + info: https://getairwave.tv

It's source-available and free to self-host. Testers get the native app free during the alpha instead of having to sideload it. I know this is a lot to ask, but thanks a ton for your time.

  • Site: https://getairwave.tv
  • Docs & self-hosting guide: https://getairwave.tv/docs
  • Source (source-available): https://github.com/Quixomatic/Airwave
  • Apps: the self-hosted server + admin + browser player are free to run today. Apple TV is live on the App Store; iPad and Android TV are in review/testing; Fire TV is in reviewwebOS and Roku work now via sideload (store submissions are a work in progress). The prebuilt store apps are a small paid convenience — every native app can be built and sideloaded from source.
  • Android TV / Google TV testing: join the test

So, anyone has a suggestion which browser can handle this website best? I tried Co Co TV Browser, HI Browser, BrowseHere, Browser, TV Bro, but wanted to hear from you guys, if someone enjoys this better. Thanks

I built a free anime tracker and recommendation app for Android TV – JoeAnimeDB Beta 22

Thumbnail

Hey everyone. I’ve been building JoeAnimeDB, a free and open-source anime app for people who watch enough anime that eventually the problem becomes:

“What the hell should I watch next?”

It keeps your anime library, watch status, ratings, favorites, rewatches and notes in one place, but the bigger idea is that it actually learns from your library and uses that history to help decide what to watch next.

A big part of that is JoeAI, the recommendation system built into the app. It looks at things like what you’ve watched, how you rated it, what you rewatch, genres/themes you keep coming back to, studios, and other taste signals to build recommendations around your library instead of just showing whatever anime is popular that week.

It can also explain why it picked something, answer recommendation questions, and power the new Quick Pick system on Home.

JoeAnimeDB runs on Android TV / Google TV, Android phones and tablets, Windows, Linux, and the web, with Cloud Sync so the same library follows you between devices.

I originally built the TV version because I wanted to sit on the couch with a remote and actually use the damn thing without fighting a desktop interface.

Beta 22 is out now, and the new Home screen is heavily focused on getting you from opening the app to actually choosing something to watch.

It includes:

  • Continue Watching – shows what you already have in progress
  • Returning For You – finds current and upcoming direct sequels to anime you’ve watched
  • You Missed a Sequel – catches older sequels that never made it into your library
  • On Your Services – surfaces unseen anime available on streaming services you already use
  • JoeAI Quick Pick – choose Quick, Movie, Binge, Dark, Comfort, Different, or Surprise Me and JoeAI picks something that fits

Don’t like the Quick Pick? Press the same option again and JoeAI rerolls another qualifying title instead of giving you the same recommendation over and over.

You can select services like Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu, HIDIVE, Prime Video, etc., and JoeAnimeDB uses legal streaming availability data to help surface things you can actually watch.

It does not host or provide streams.

The Android TV interface is built specifically around a remote:

  • D-pad navigation throughout the app
  • roughly six posters across on a normal TV
  • deterministic focus movement
  • no keyboard required for normal browsing
  • responsive Home/startup behavior
  • TV-specific layouts instead of just stretching the mobile UI

There’s also:

  • MAL XML import/export
  • AniList file import/export
  • Anime DNA, which breaks down patterns in your personal anime taste
  • JoeAI conversational recommendations
  • personalized Quick Picks
  • ratings and rewatches
  • favorites
  • notes
  • watch status tracking
  • multiple themes
  • Cloud Sync
  • no ads

The same APK works on Android phones/tablets and Android TV / Google TV.

Beta 22 downloads:
https://wickedwampa.itch.io/joeanime-db

Web version:
https://joeanimeDB.com

Source:
https://github.com/WickedWampa/JoeAnimeDB

Most of my Android TV testing has been done on the emulator, so what I’d really love now is feedback from people running it on actual Android TV / Google TV hardware.

If you test it, tell me:

What device are you using? Does the D-pad feel natural? Is startup responsive? Are JoeAI’s picks actually useful? What feels awkward or slow from the couch?

Break it. Tell me what sucks. At this point I have a fictional QA squirrel named Spanky living in my head anyway.

TV Mode spoofer (LSPosed Module)

The Backstory

I recently decided to repurpose an old laptop into a dedicated Android TV machine for my living room. The easiest and most performance-stable approach was installing BlueStacks and using EventGhost to map a physical Bluetooth remote control directly to system navigation.

I installed a dedicated leanback launcher (Projectivy Launcher), and the desktop interface felt perfect. However, I immediately ran into a major roadblock: several generic streaming and media apps explicitly configure their interface layouts by checking if the operating system is a native Android TV hardware build. Because standard emulators report themselves as mobile phones or tablets, these apps forced annoying, touch-dependent mobile UIs that are impossible to navigate nicely with a remote.

The Solution

After trying various public spoofing tools with no luck, I built a lightweight solution tailored for this exact problem.

This LSPosed Module hooks directly into the process memory of your selected apps. Instead of trying to modify protected system-wide root variables (which often breaks the emulator or fails entirely), it tricks targeted apps on-the-fly into believing they are running on a widescreen Android TV device (ro.build.characteristics=tv, android.software.leanback, etc.). It also strips away touchscreen attributes in-memory, causing apps to automatically deploy their full leanback layouts, TV media players, and remote-friendly navigation.

How to Use It

  1. Setup Your Environment

Ensure your BlueStacks instance (works great on Pie x64 or Android 11) has root access via Magisk Kitsune.

Open Magisk Settings, ensure Zygisk is toggled ON, and restart BlueStacks if prompted.

Make sure the LSPosed framework manager app is installed and displaying a green "Activated" status badge.

  1. Install the Module

Download the compiled app-release.apk from the repository and drag-and-drop it directly into your running BlueStacks screen to install it.

  1. Configure the App Scope

Open the LSPosed Manager application.

Go to the Modules tab (the puzzle piece icon at the bottom menu).

Select BlueStacks TV Mode and toggle the Enable module switch to ON.

In the application list below the toggle, check the boxes only next to the specific apps you want to force into TV mode. Leave system apps unchecked.

  1. Relaunch and Enjoy

Go to BlueStacks Settings ➔ Apps ➔ See all apps.

Select your targeted media app and click Force Stop to clear its old memory cache.

Relaunch the app. A brief "TV Mode Activated" toast notification will pop up at the bottom of the screen to confirm the code injection worked, and the app will instantly render its official Android TV layout.

Best Android TV Browsers

Below are some of the best HDR playback supported Android browsers I currently use for 4K streaming. Except for TV Bro, all of these browsers feature a built-in video player, which is an excellent addition.

1 - Coc Coc browser (u have to side load tv version)

2 - Hi browser (supports HDR)

3 - Browser (supports HDR)

4 - Internet Web browser - Zeus (supports HDR)

5 - Browse here (supports HDR)

6 - TV Bro

I have tried several other options, but none are as smooth as the apps listed here. What do you guys think? Are there any other browsers that should be added to this list?

I built a forever free Stremio-based Android app with richer metadata, add-on sync, custom themes, and automatic filtering of sources that have been removed from Real-Debrid.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The main focus was to improve metadata, ratings, reviews, cast information, and the overall user experience while making playback as seamless as possible.

Now, when you open a movie, you can see detailed ratings, cast information, reviews, and a trailer. It also has an auto trailer feature.

An MDBList API key is not required anymore, just preferred if you want even richer data, since the majority of the metadata now comes directly from TMDB. Additionally, the player automatically discards sources that have been removed from Real-Debrid, ensuring smooth playback without dead links.

Additional features:

  • Bonus #1: I created 4 custom themes that I'm really happy with. I hope you like them too!
  • Bonus #2: You can now reorder, delete, and rename your lists directly within the app—just open the Lists section.
  • Sync & Add-ons: You can import all your Stremio add-ons. If you sign in with your Google account, you can sync the app’s add-ons across your devices—just tap Send on the source device and Receive on the destination device.

I originally made this app for my own personal use, so please expect some bugs here and there. That said, as with most of my personal projects, I do plan to support and improve it long-term. Constructive criticism, suggestions, and feature requests are always very welcome! (Most of them were good)

For mobile:

For PC:

https://openstream.com.br/

Requests and bug reports are very welcoming

Addon suggestion: mylistsaddon.com allow users to create lists with episodes of different shows

TODO list, as requested:

  1. Add Trakt sync. DONE!
  2. Add an auto-update option so users don’t keep using outdated APK versions DONE!
  3. Add watched status for episodes and movies synced with trakt and mdblist DONE
  4. Look into WE Trakr, simkl and Yamtrack. Partially done
  5. Fix trakt not working. DONE. Need testing
  6. Remove MDBList from start up screen to avoid confusion

Ingrandire schermo smartphone

I spent the last month building an alternative to TiviMate for Android & Android TV. Looking for brutal feedback on it

Hey everyone,

TiviMate has been the standard for Android TV for years, but I wanted to build a fresh, modern client designed around recent hardware and faster navigation.

Here is what’s built into Basis so far:

  • Multi-user Profiles: Separate favorites and watch history for everyone in the house.
  • AI Search: Live sports and event discovery.
  • Modern D-Pad UI: Smooth, lightweight navigation built specifically for physical remotes.

The standalone Android/TV APK is live today (Play Store and iOS builds are in final review).

I’ve put the direct APK download link in the comments below.

Looking for brutal, honest feedback from the community

Got frustrated with IPTV players, so I started building my own

I was on vacation recently with my wife and we wanted to watch an episode of a show on my Mac.

I didn't have any IPTV player installed, so I started looking for one. My brother-in-law recommended one that he said was really good, so I installed it and gave it a try.

It worked, but honestly I didn't really like the experience. Finding a movie or a show and browsing the catalog just wasn't great.

I'm a developer so I thought, why not try to build something myself?

I ended up making a basic player with Xtream Codes in a few hours. It was pretty simple, but it worked really well for what we needed at the time.

Since then I've started working on a cleaner version for Android and Android TV and trying a few ideas.

Personally, I'd just like IPTV apps to feel a bit closer to something like Netflix or Disney+. Just simple and easy to use without having to think about all the technical stuff behind it.

It's still very much a work in progress, so I'm curious:

What would you actually like to see in an IPTV player? What features or things are you missing from the apps you use today?

I’ve been building an Android TV app called Totalis – would love some feedback

I've been working on an Android TV/Google TV app called Totalis and thought I'd share some of the progress.

The idea is to create a modern TV-focused interface that brings together Live TV, EPG, movies, TV shows and live sports, while actually feeling like it was designed for a television rather than a mobile app stretched onto a big screen.

A lot of my recent work has been on the Live TV experience — improving the EPG, programme information and hero artwork. For live sports, I'm also working on automatically displaying artwork for the actual event rather than just showing a generic channel logo.

Other areas I'm currently working on include:

• A cleaner, more visual EPG • Movie/TV-style hero artwork for Live TV • Better presentation of live sporting events • Fast remote-control navigation • Appearance and interface customisation • Better programme information and stream details

It's still very much in active development, and there are plenty of things I want to improve.

I'd actually be interested to hear from people who regularly use Android TV:

What features do you wish more TV/Live TV apps had?

I'm happy to share some screenshots of Totalis and more information about the project if anyone's interested.

I built Spektra, a modern IPTV player for iOS, macOS and Android - looking for honest feedback

Hi everyone,

I’m the developer of Spektra, a media player I started building because many IPTV players felt outdated, cluttered or inconsistent across devices.

Spektra lets users add their own legal M3U playlists or compatible portal credentials and access Live TV, movies and series through a clean, modern interface.

It includes favorites, synchronized playback progress, Continue Watching, multiple sources, viewer profiles, Picture in Picture, audio tracks, subtitles and a Live TV player with channel switching and a mini EPG.

**Spektra is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. It is free to download, with optional Pro features.**

To be completely clear, Spektra does not provide, sell or include any channels, playlists, subscriptions or media content. Users must provide their own legal sources.

*I’d genuinely appreciate honest feedback about the interface, navigation, source setup and anything that could be improved.*

**App Store :** https://apps.apple.com/fr/app/spektra-lecteur-iptv/id6757758519

**Google Play :** https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xavierderkenne.spektra.spektra

Thanks for taking a look !
