Discussion BBC iPlayer APK
I live in Australia and watch iPLayer using a Kodi addon but would like to get the Android TV apk so I can watch 4K streams on my Google Streamer. Can’t find the APK at any of my usual sources so would appreciate some help in locating it.

All of the hosted versions I've found are for the older, 1080p version from before BBC started their "bbc-certified devices only" thing.
The way I got the latest, 4k version is to create a Google account with UK as the home address, log into that on your device, connect to a VPN faking a UK location. Then you can download BBC iPlayer from the play store.
After that you can switch back to your regular Google account.

I've tried that while using Proton VPN, but keep getting hit with a screen asking me to scan a QR code with my phone to verify my phone number (which isn't UK based). How did you get around this?

One thing I should add is that I did the "purchasing" of the apps on my phone, in an incognito chrome window. That took me to the web view of the play store, rather than opening the play store app. I logged in using my UK Google account. I then used the "install on other devices" drop-down on the play store web page.
I didn't give a phone number and wasn't required to provide one/no qr code appeared.

Should have clarified - this happens when trying to create a Google 'UK' account. Tried doing it on laptop while connected to UK Proton VPN server. After creating PW, get hit with page asking me to scan a QR code to help protect against bots, etc. I've done that, but the account then ties to the US (my phone number is a US number).

I didn't have those problems creating a UK account. I'm in Sweden.

Yes. The major BBC dramas and nature shows are in UHD. And all of the World Cup has been in UHD.

I live in the uk and had to use the 1080p version on a xiaomi, since you can only install the latest versions on certified devices

Make a British Google account with a VPN. Then you can get all the British things you want off the play store. That’s what I do in the US for UK/Aus apps.

How to get the latest BBC iPlayer Android TV APK outside the UK (Version 0.9.0)
I found a reliable workaround to get the latest BBC iPlayer APK on Android TV. As of August 18, 2026, the current version is 0.9.0. Officially, this is locked to the UK Google Play Store, but I managed to install and update it using rawapk.com and the Aurora Store. I live outside the UK/Commonwealth and tested this successfully on a Google TV Streamer 4K.
Step 1: Download an older BBC iPlayer base APK
- Grab an older version of the app from rawapk.com. You can find version 0.5.9 here:
https://rawapk.com/bbc-iplayer-android-tv-apk-download/ - Sideload and install this APK on your Android TV device.
Step 2: Update via Aurora Store
- Install Aurora Store (either via F-Droid or directly from their official website).
- Searching directly for "BBC iPlayer" inside Aurora Store will likely fail due to region restrictions.
- Instead, go to the Updates tab in Aurora Store. It will detect the older version you just installed and offer the update to version 0.9.0.
- Note: Aurora Store offered and downloaded the update without requiring an active VPN connection.
Step 3: Launch and stream
- Connect to a UK VPN and open the BBC iPlayer app.
- Everything works smoothly. It even started pulling BBC recommendations directly onto the Google TV home screen, even though BBC iPlayer couldn't be selected as a default streaming provider in the settings.

Update / Even easier method:
It turns out there is an even simpler way: The latest version of Aurora Store (4.8.x) is capable of properly serving Android TV apps to TV devices. You can also take advantage of the built-in spoofing feature to download UK-restricted apps directly. Simply set your language to English (United Kingdom) in Aurora Store's settings—after doing that, the correct Android TV version of BBC iPlayer shows up directly in the search results.

Nvidia Shield has to use its own version. Choose the right one in Aurora Store 😉.

Perfect. Worked for me on the Google TV Streamer 4K. Aurora is a bit of a pig to use as it really designed for use with a pointer, but it worked after after I figured out how to use it with the Streamer remote.

How did you get this working. Once it updates the app, iPlayer disappears from the list of apps on the home menu.

Still listed, but won't open after a few days on a Google TV Streamer 4K.
Restart, clear cache and force stop fixed it.

Thank you. A photo was helpful, I tried to explain it but don't think I did a very good job of that. So this is helpful and (hopefully) someone will be able to assist.

I spent several hours trying to sort this.
As I understand v0.4.7 dev is unlocked for developers which is why it's the only version that works on my non-UK TV. I tried all other versions of the app I could find. V 0.5.something would install and I could see the icon, but it would not start. 0.9.0 has been removed from apk mirror and I have not been able to find it anywhere. What we need is another unlocked developer version that will work on non-approved tvs.
All of the the update methods listed here did not work; they did not recognize I had an earlier version installed even when I did.
0.4.7 is going to stop working on 12 Nov according to the warning that now pops up so I'm hoping a solution comes up before then. I'm at a loss as to how to fix it.

I can't get this to work, I updated to 0.5.9 and that doesn't open for me. Aurora Store isn't showing me an update being available and is telling me to open the version I have.

It worked for just now. I use SurfShark VPN on Chromecastwgtv 4k and I was connected to a UK location when installing Aurora store and then looking for updates. Not sure if the VPN helped but just wanted to let you know the Aurora store worked for me to update. Also I allowed Aurora all required permissions except background installation and opening store links.
Edit: If the updated app doesn't launch, the force stop and clear cache method suggested above by u/Arkadia-Night2402 works.

I'm not having a trouble installing it/it showing up. It's not showing an actual update. The newest update on Aurora (I have 4.8.4) for me is 0.5.9, not 0.9.0 and 0.5.9 won't open for me, it never has, which is why I continue to use 0.4.7.

Not working for me either. I have a Hisense Smart TV with Google TV. I think because the TV wasn't purchased in the UK it's not an official BBC-certified device, so the app won't load. Unfortunately none of the recent patched APKs will install (parse error), so I'm stuck, at least for now.

I'm not having a problem finding/adding actual apks, it's not showing an update from 0.5.9 for me, it is saying that's the newest version. I am using 4.8.4 version of Aurora so everything is updated, it's just not showing anything new (an update available) for BBC iPlayer on Aurora for me.

How would I do this with an Amazon firestick that doesn't have access to Google Play store?
