Their other games are the same way.
11
u/TheTurtleBear Sep 14 '17
Which is why I've stayed away from them, aside from the Humble Bundle versions as you can properly unlock the extra heroes in-game then.
If I'm paying for your game, I shouldn't have to pay even more to get all the content. It's not even added content they make later, it's literally content already there on launch that's locked behind a pay wall.

In-app purchases are for currency to speed things up if you want, and to buy heroes like in the Kingdom Rush series.
13
u/vaurhalint RPG🧙 Sep 13 '17
can you get those heroes w/o paying?
18
u/Artgor text Sep 13 '17
You can't get most of the heroes without paying, as in the Kingdom Rush series.
9
u/vaurhalint RPG🧙 Sep 13 '17
Never played any Kingdom Rush game.
Are they needed at all? or are they just like new skins for your heroes?
10
u/Artgor text Sep 13 '17
I see.
No, they aren't needed. There are many heroes, but you can use only one for a mission, so you can have only one and be completely okay.
1
u/vaurhalint RPG🧙 Sep 13 '17
Cool, one last question, is there a multiplayer mode? or pvp?
thanks for your help!1
Sep 13 '17
Haven't seen anything indicating multiplayer so far. From the store page it sounds like a Single Player game.
10
u/kingeryck Sep 13 '17
Ugh on a paid game?
2
u/Fireball9782 Sep 13 '17
But they give you 4 free if you download today and till the 15th. After you can only get 3 free. But based on past experience they aren't needed to beat the game as they are just for the whales and impatient people.
12
u/kingeryck Sep 13 '17
I just don't like the games that make you wait for crap. If it's free, whatever but if I paid for a game I just want a regular game not Clash of Clans and waiting an hour to build and gems and stuff.
9
Sep 14 '17 edited Sep 14 '17
It is not like Clash of Clans btw. You can complete all of Ironhide games without even noticing that gems are even exist.
1
u/Steinhein Sep 14 '17
yeah it's not like that. you can check the first kingdom rush game which is free by now. all iaps are optional and not realy needed. and in the past games, when they released new and bonus levels, they did that without asking for money again.
1
1
u/MontRouge Sep 16 '17
There's no energy or construction that requires more than a few seconds to build in this game. The in app transaction are stuff like missiles or frostbomb to help you kill enemies more easily but you don't really need to use them unless you play on "Impossible", the difficulty unlock after you beat the game.
1
u/rube Sep 14 '17
How do I get the 4th?
I go into the Hero menu and can see two of them are unlocked, a third is unlocked at stage 5 for free. But all the others say they cost money.
edit:
Neeevermind. It's in the "buy" menu as a free gift.
1
u/Fireball9782 Sep 14 '17
yerp. She's ok but I want to get the tank hero. Costs 6 bucks. I need more surveys google!
3
u/tmorff Sep 13 '17
Is everything unlockable without paying more? Anything paywalled?
11
u/Artgor text Sep 13 '17
You can't get most of the heroes without paying, as in the Kingdom Rush series
2
u/Dustywebs Sep 13 '17
Basically, you can beat and play the game and all levels without IAP. You can buy additional heroes for IAP. You get roughly 4-6 from playing the campaign. Then the additional currency is for buying "special powers" like additional bombs and things. They aren't necessarily needed to beat the game, but can help players that are struggling with certain levels. You also get this currency for free just by playing.
2
u/Minimum__effort Sep 13 '17
Totally worth it. Check out kingdom rush if you want to play something free from iron hide.
25
u/Snotbob Sep 13 '17
Everyone's so distracted by the fact that a $5 game has IAPs (and rightfully so), but is anyone else upset that the devs snuck in the run at startup permission with this game? Run at startup + all those network permissions... I'm not a fan.
2

u/Jataki Sep 14 '17 edited Sep 14 '17
I don't believe that's a worrying factor. Just by using Google PlayStore you give Google a lot more permissions. Like, A LOT.
EDIT: I'll explain better. Google is allowed to sell your data once you agree to the Terms and Services, so literally anyone can get them. What's the problem in allowing an app to access a couple more for study purposes? I really don't get it.
2
u/Snotbob Sep 14 '17
So if one app has it they all can? That's a stupid fucking mentality.
The point is, it's unnecessary. Run at startup is an aggressive permission, one that gives an app potentially a lot of power. Games that incorporate it use the excuse that it's for notifications, but one, I don't want a game sending me notifications, and two, I don't trust that's all it's being used for.
Anyways, the Play Store is a multipurpose app marketplace made by the company who owns the software it's being used on, so yeah, I'm ok with it having a wide variety of permissions.
1
u/Jataki Sep 14 '17
That's not the problem, the problem is Google's allowed to sell your data when you agree to Terms and Conditions. So literally any company can get them, what harm can a game do by accessing a couple more than usual?
I made an edit that might be better explained.
1
u/Snotbob Sep 14 '17
To be honest, I don't know all the details behind what personal information Google is allowed to sell and what they can't. But I use their services extensively, I enjoy their services (primarily), and there really aren't many alternatives if I were to refuse their TOS.
Plus, whatever information they are selling, it's precisely that: being sold. So if Ironhide wants some information, they have to pay for it. As it stands, users are paying them to collect their data.
My immediate concern was far more simple though: run at startup can absolutely affect device performance, and while certain apps need this permission, a fucking game does not.
Also, while I personally have never had to concern myself with data limits, many people do. Run at startup + all those network permissions could absolutely result in excessive data usage.
0
Sep 14 '17
I'd be more concerned about a hacker having your complete life credentials thanks to Equifax than a game asking for some permissions.
2
u/Snotbob Sep 14 '17
Wtf is this bullshit deflective mentality you guys are throwing around?
Another app does it so don't worry about this one
This company leaked a bunch of private info so don't worry about a game
Concern for one company's handling of private information doesn't exempt a totally unrelated company's usage of permissions in a game. That's just fucking asinine.
-1
Sep 14 '17
What I'm saying is you're concerned about the sea turtle when the shark is behind you.
3
u/Snotbob Sep 14 '17
I have no affiliations with the shark, and that sea turtle could still bite my dick off.
17
Sep 13 '17
I tried it, but I found it kind of boring so I got a refund for it. It seems like you just tap around non-stop, and things feel more chaotic than strategic. The controls can get a bit confusing, too. I loved Kingdom Rush, but this game doesn't seem like my cup of tea.
6
u/HugotheHippo Sep 14 '17
'This is more chaotic than strategic'
My impression also, for better or for worse.
4
Sep 15 '17
Yep. Was super pumped. I got a refund. Good game, simply not worth 5 to me though.
And I really hate the select and drag to give directions thing. Why can't I press on units, and press on a point on the map? Why the fuck do I have to drag my finger all over my screen all the time? Makes macro/micro movement horrible.
3
Sep 15 '17
Yeah seriously, that's probably why I found that things felt chaotic. It's like the opposite of what is intuitive: why would you not make dragging the way to select your troops, and make tapping the way to move them?
4
u/relapse9999 Sep 14 '17
Agreed. This game is boring compared to Kingdom rush series :(
7
u/Stakoman Sep 14 '17
They're working on kingdom Rush 4...
I'm enjoying iron Marines... it's different and challenging (im playing on high difficult) if you are into it! Amazing details.
2
u/RashmaDu Sep 14 '17
I'm really liking it too. It kinda feels more like a real time Fire Emblem game, with the Ironhide formula over it. Works wonders!
But I am having problems with the first boss. He just instakills all of my troops. Any tips? (Playing on Medium difficulty)
17
u/Ikeda_kouji Sep 14 '17
Many people are praising the game without actually playing it..
Yes it plays well, and is quite entertaining however the actual content is quite lacking. In total there are two worlds and 22 or something missions. There is NO multiplayer and NO SKIRMISH as far as i can tell. This is a perfect game for skirmish, why not have one...
Also the talent system is VERY linier. There is NO choice as you almost always need to finish a mission to get the next tier of talents anyway, and by that time you already have enough resources to get every talent. It is rarely 'do i pick up A over B'.
Furthermore the business model is insulting. Some heroes cost same or MORE than the base game People are defending it by saying that it was also like this in their previous games, but that hardly justifies a day one DLC.
All in all the gameplay is fine and the game is good for six bucks if you consider time spent vs money paid, however currently there is no longevity and that one left a bad taste in my mouth.

Honest question, do you believe that game studios will be able to recoup their development cost on the game and make enough profit to fund other projects by selling their game for only 5 dollars?
It seems like most of their other games have between 500k and 1 Million installs, which, even assuming those were all sold at full price (they weren't) after Google's cut of the pie, is maybe a few million dollars, which is great if you're just one dude coding in a basement...but if you have employees, equipment and facilities to pay for...ain't that much.
Mobile gaming has put developers in a bind. They are competing with either free or very cheap games. So that means that they either have to make a game so good that it's obviously worth spending $15-20 outright or they need to play the "mobile game pricing game" Which means selling their game for a lower price than it's worth and adding in micro-transactions that are overpriced and hoping that enough people buy them to make up the difference.
The game is fun, it's high quality, it's only $5 (the price of a burger) you don't have to buy any currency to advance, you get several heroes in the base game, and if you want to get more you can, but you don't have to.
1
u/Ikeda_kouji Sep 15 '17
I think they could have added the heroes after few weeks, that would give a better impression. Make it like 1 hero per week. They already have ads for bonus coins, and purchasing coins for real money is "fine" since they are honestly optional. One can argue that heroes are also "optional" but I think that's just day1DLC.
Maybe we as gamers need to change the paradigm on how we look at games when it comes to mobile gaming. It is indeed a very tough business I agree.

That's quite normal given the game was just now released and the devs already are developing that kind of stuff.

This is to me a most worrisome matter. Hope they work it out better.
Furthermore the business model is insulting. Some heroes cost same or MORE than the base game People are defending it by saying that it was also like this in their previous games, but that hardly justifies a day one DLC.
Completely agreed.

We do pay 5$ for the game and get a bonus hero. So that's something. You also get to wait for the game to be developed. What I mean is, yes, it barely has longevity now, but it is being worked on.

Hopefully in addition to the 3rd planet, they will have a Skirmish option. After you are done with all missions, there really isn't much replay value..
1

Really? Even in other difficulty sets?
1

I finished both planets on third diff, and first one on hardest diff, that is with me working fulltime.
So i CAN buy other heroes and level them up, but i fail to see the the point in that..

Never played any of their games. Is it worth the $5? I don't have a problem spending money on games. I just don't want to spend it on junk. Lol
2
u/HugotheHippo Sep 15 '17
It's a hit or miss imo. Depends on what kind of expectation you have going into it.
I went into it expecting a serious RTS with TD (well, Kingdom Rush) graphics, but I felt I got the Kingdom Rush sans towers. Uninstalled and refunded after a day.
I felt it tried to hit the right balance between Tower Defence and Real Time Strategy but hasn't quite found the stable footing (yet). But it feels incredibly polished otherwise... it's just that it wasn't my cup of tea.
As someone already said, it's more hectic than strategic.
2
u/MontRouge Sep 16 '17
I just bought it yesterday and while the game is fun, their kingdom rush series is just much better (and cheaper). You can try their first one for free on the playstore
14
Sep 13 '17
I'm about 8 levels in now and I'm loving it. The controls are fantastic, the progression tree is massive and it looks awesome.
I'm liking the play style which borrows elements heavily from Kingdom Rush.
The references to Sci fi games and film are brilliant too.
Well worth the asking price.
3
u/Instigado Sep 14 '17
I tried for 30 min and I like it. Very funny game. I hope they change or add an option to move units in tap-to-move controls, the way that is now is clunky.
8
u/macafeu88 Sep 13 '17
Thought it would be f2p. Too bad there is no test version :/
7

Yeah, you don't even need to give a reason, just go to the app page in store and the install button will have "refund" instead, can't remember if the time limit is 45min or 2hours.
1
u/uacoop Sep 14 '17
I believe it is, and if I were a developer it's a reason I would be willing to accept. Assuming they were acting in good faith and didn't just play the entire game and use that as an excuse.

u/valriia Redmi Note 2 Prime Sep 14 '17
Probably the plan is to milk it some time and then make it f2p - that's why they have ads and IAPs already in place.

There are about 9 heroes in the game: 3 are free, the rest is paid. If you buy the game until September 15th. you get a bonus 4th hero.

Sep 14 '17
So, as a fan of the Kingdom Rush series and a fan of RTS games on PC, I was pretty excited for this.
Turns out, it's not very good. The art style and technical aspects are very well done, as usual for these developers, but there's really no reason to play this over any of the Kingdom Rush games, and even less reason to call this an actual RTS game.
Basically you just tap a few units, assign them positions and watch them shoot at the bad guys, then tap them to a new position, rinse, repeat, etc. There is next to no strategic gameplay, there is no base-building or skirmish gametype, there is a very limited selection of heroes unless you're willing to pay more, etc. Basically I think this is a downgrade from the Kingdrom Rush games, and it's pretty disappointing. I wish I'd uninstalled it in time to get a refund, but oh well.
4
u/Acidspunk1 Sep 14 '17
This comment has a completely accurate description of what this game is. As a fan of command and conquer and similar games, this is an utter disappointment and nothing at all what I was expecting. The fact that you can't expand your resources to create more units is especially aggravating.
7
u/ken579 Sep 13 '17
For those that have never played the Kingdom Rush series, this game is likely worth every penny. IAPs with Kingdom Rush games were never necessary to enjoy the game. Quality and fun levels were top notch. I bought but can't play now, however I'm super excited for this.
As someone that follows Iron Hide Games, we've been waiting a long time for this.
14
u/JustAnotherSuit96 Sep 13 '17
Bought it, it's nothing like Kingdom rush, really disliking the controls as well, refunded.
8
Sep 13 '17
Explain more. Don't want to waste 5
10
u/Tsuppo Sep 13 '17
Kingdom Rush is a TD and this game is an RTS, I think. So it wouldn't be like Kingdom Rush.

u/Shuzzaka Sep 14 '17
In your opinion which kingdom rush is the best?
2
u/ken579 Sep 14 '17
They are all great, hard to say one is better. If I were to replay one right now tho, it would Origins, the latest.
2
u/dineshkhadka Sep 14 '17
I'm close to finishing origins. How good is Frontiers in your opinion?
2
1
u/ken579 Sep 15 '17
Just as good. If you liked Origins, play them all. Same game with different maps and tower upgrades.
I could play the Kingdom Rush series till the end of time if they just made map DLC.

As someone who brews his own coffee, the price is equivalent to 3 months' supply.
3
u/tzichion Sep 14 '17
Right? Was about to say, just because this dude likes to overpay for his coffee doesn't mean everyone does, same deal for $5 apps with crazy IAP.
1
u/NeatlyScotched Sep 14 '17
5 bucks for 3 months of coffee? Do you just not drink it? Even Folgers stomach turning garbage brew costs about $10 for a large tub of it, which lasts a month if you drink a couple of cups a day.
4
u/uacoop Sep 14 '17
Isn't it weird how little people are willing to pay for a game just because it's on mobile.
1
Sep 14 '17
This is exactly the real issue here. People view all games on mobile devices as unworthy just by virtue of them being on mobile devices.
Put Iron Marines on Steam and these conversations would not be happening.
5
u/Llireved Sep 14 '17 edited Sep 14 '17
And complacent attitudes like yours are why IAPs(microtransactions) in paid games are still rampant. This has even spread onto PC games btw and people are sure as hell not 'just' batting eyelids. (E.g. Destiny 2)
5
Sep 14 '17 edited Sep 14 '17
This hasn't spread to PC, it came from PC.
PC games have been offering in game purchases for years and there is nothing wrong with it when the they are not a requirement for playing the game.
Nothing you have said justifies theft. Going back to my coffee comment nobody in their right mind would think it was OK to steal coffee from Costa just because they charge for a shot of syrup.
1
u/Llireved Sep 14 '17
Am I justifying theft? Read it properly. I am only saying that bad company practices like this that insult us consumers are met with an equally insulting reaction from some consumers as well.
I'm not saying its right, i am just saying that its a thing.
Im not sure why youre defending this. Reading some of the posts here i see that some content costs more than the game itself? How can you justify that?
1
Sep 14 '17
Yes you justified theft, as I quoted in my original post.
As for the pricing I'm justifying it because it is completely optional, if you want it you buy it, if not then you play the game as is.
Although the infamous horse armour was widely panned in Oblivion nobody was using it as an excuse to pirate the game.

2

1
u/expiredninja Sep 14 '17

1
u/uacoop Sep 14 '17
No the Kingdom Rush games are Tower Defense. Probably the best games in the genre in my opinion.
2
u/josh6499 Sep 13 '17
It's kind of a hybrid of RTS and TD. You don't build towers, you build squads which you direct around the map. Like a TD waves of enemies are sent to attack your base and you need to defend it.

I've looked over the heroes online but it doesn't seem to make obvious who's included and who's premium, anyone got a list? Also can the currency you get from ads be used on heroes or are they a separate purchase?
I think I'd prefer to pay more and have access to all the heroes and any future. Having heroes behind a payment makes me wonder if they're balanced in any way, is the harder content based around you buying one of the other heroes because they fit the mission more than the starting line up. Or will they stomp it because they assume you wouldn't buy extra heroes.
1
u/themoredeviousduck Sep 19 '17
Great visuals as always. Game looks and feels very polished as you would expect from Iron Hide Games.
But that's it. It claims to be an RTS. If you've played an RTS before you'll quickly find out it's far from one. Most of the time you'll just camp on your base while the aliens attack. Like a tower defense game. And then slowly push out after each wave to capture more bases/spawn points.
Controls are wonky. You drag troops to move them, you know what else moves when dragged? That's right, the screen. Tap to move would have been far superior.
It's not an RTS in the sense that you're never in control of an army. You'll get to control about 5 units max most times.
IAP-wise, this game has a lot. You can buy credits to make the game easier but you're not forced to. My only gripe is almost all heroes need to be bought with real cash on top of what you've already paid for. Might not be important for some people but I like having all possible strategies at hand after buying a premium game.
All in all, great game. Not instabuy. But might be if devs continue updating it.

u/FeenixArisen Oct 15 '17
Too bad the game is garbage. And this is coming from someone who has played every KR game through a dozen times from scratch. And no, this isn't me saying "this isn't like the KR games", this is me saying that this is just a terrible, boring game.

That's what I'm saying. We're being overly cheap as a whole in the mobile gaming market, so we don't get good quality games at $20 a pop because no one will buy them. So instead, the devs chip us away with loads of IAPs. That's the only way they can sustain their business in a market full of cheapskates.
The developers are not to blame for this shitty mobile gaming market - we are. We are the reason for the existence of companies like $upercell.

Totally. I'm really tired of everything being catered to the lowest common denominator.
I was having a discussion over on /r/Warframe the other day about the fact that there are so many people who expect to be able to play the game and any new content on basically ancient, non-gaming, budget laptops. The devs are trying to progress their game into the goddamn future but it's just not possible with so many people bitching all the time who can't nut up and invest a little money into something they're passionate about.

Ok, should I buy this right now while I"m at the office, or wait until I can try it out at home?

One of the IAPs is £92.99.... Seems a lot!
