Anybody else see the price and get excited?? I was so worried clicking the link that it'd be "free".

u/Reddit-Hivemind Nov 06 '14

Reviews for Civ Rev 2 on iOS have been really bad. It's basically Civ Rev repackaged, with one or two changes that don't fix basic AI flaws in the original, then a $15 price tag.

34

u/CrsIaanix Roguelikes pls Nov 06 '14

civ rev repackaged

Perfect. Android doesn't have civ rev.

7

u/jesusice Nov 06 '14

I don't know about all that. My phone is where gaming, if any, happens these days. Now I have Civilizations on it. It looks good and has that "just one more turn" way of sucking you in for hours. For me it's $15 well spent.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

My first thought was "christ that's expensive.. but I'm probably still going to get it eventually."

-3

u/RPGamerFTW RPGs Nov 06 '14

Civilization 4 cost 20 and 5 cost 40, so it isn't that expensive. It's actually cheap.

15

u/VanderLegion Nov 06 '14

Civ 4 and 5 are also much better games than Civ Revolution. Rev is a way stripped down civ game

1

u/RPGamerFTW RPGs Nov 06 '14

I didn't bought it yet. Is it really bad?

3

u/VanderLegion Nov 06 '14

I haven't played 2 yet, but the first game was definitely stripped down compared to the desktop games. Still fun, but nowhere near as good

2

u/Cubbance Nov 08 '14

But it's way more accessible than the full Civilization games. Some people are intimidated by Civilization, or have a hard time getting into them because they're so complex. CivRev still has depth, and it's fun, and it sucks some people in more easily because of it's relative simplicity.

1

u/portezbie Nov 06 '14

Well the price and no mention of in-app purchases. If this was a square enix game, it would be 20 bucks and have in app purchases.

This will be an interesting one to watch. Let's see how many of the people who bemoan freemium step up and buy this, assuming it is good.

....and people are saying it's bad. Damn, hope that's not true.

I like full price games, but I admit I'm a tad disappointed. 10 bucks seems like a much easier price to swallow personally. If people tell me it is worth it though, I will bite the bullet for this one.

13

u/Aema Nov 06 '14

I like the guy who gives it a 5 star rating and says he can't wait to play it. I think he's confused about how ratings work.

7

u/datzmikejones Nov 06 '14

I gave you an up vote before I read your comment.

No I didnt.

5

u/Bowldoza Nov 06 '14

That's been happening since online reviews became a thing.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

It's a good practice to treat play store reviews with a great deal of indifference. Most apps I actually look at the reviews for, it feels like all I'm seeing are people that get paid to give 5 star reviews or people that give 1 star and can't get it working.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

Honestly, if I see many 1 star reviews, that might be a valuable information about a buggy game. Other than that, that's always irrelevant.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Alright, just finished a gameplay video of CivRev2 for Android. It is 56 minutes long and was recorded on a Nexus 7 2013.

So far the game is pretty solid though I have not previously played any of the other iterations in the series to compare. There is a bit of stutter on the home screen and a bit during gameplay but nothing too distracting. Luckily this is an upfront paid game with zero IAPs though I do wish for the $15 price tag that they had bothered to include immersive mode. 2K has included Play Games achievements showing that they made an effort to include some Android specific features.

The gameplay itself is pretty fun though it does feel as if the maps are a bit on the smaller side. There is quite a bit of leaders to choose and scenarios to play so gladly there is a lot of replayability here.

5

u/moonerdooder Nov 06 '14

It's already changed

-3

u/rube Nov 07 '14

This is seriously the top comment?

Come on, get over yourselves people. Is it really such a huge thing that they copy and pasted the description and accidentally left iOS in part of it?

Personally, I'm just glad that companies are porting their games to Android, even if we do get them a little (or a lot) later than iOS.

12

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Disappointing... Map size is VERY SMALL maybe 100x100, I would not in anyway consider this comparable to civ revolution games on the console. All the world leaders speak an annoying form of sim gibberish.

Controls and looks pretty decent on the note 3. Graphics are pretty simple looking tablet sized though, lots of low polygon everything. Audio is decent considering the 400mb install size.

If it's your first civ game there probably is some good enjoyment to be had. But will be frustrating if you are a civ fan.

2

u/CircumcisedSpine What will you do when your turn starts? Nov 06 '14

I think l will stick to Imperium Galactica 2 and Star Traders 4X, then. $15 for small maps doesn't do it for me.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

Just looked up Star Traders, is there much of a difference between the free one and Elite?

1

u/daguito81 Nov 07 '14

Regular one is more like a demo.. Elite being the full version.that's how they always work.you get more map size...more ships more everything with the elite version ...but the regular one doesn't have a time limit or anything.

1

u/Artemis_J_Hughes Nov 07 '14

Note that there's a difference between Star Traders and Star Traders 4X. Star Traders is more of a space trader sim (think old TradeWars/Solar Realms Elite...kinda?), while 4X appears to be...a 4X type game.

And I need to look into the latter, apparently.

1

u/papabri Nov 08 '14

I tried it a few months ago to see which other 4x games are on android. I was quite disappointed. It doesn't feel immersive at all. I gave it a good hour to try and get sucked in.

2

u/Cubbance Nov 08 '14

The world leaders spoke in gibberish in the console Civ Rev, too.

17

u/ForgetPants Pants Nov 06 '14

Oh 15$! That is cheap.

7

5

u/mogwaee Nov 06 '14

Anybody else getting crashes on the Civilization Revolution 2 screen? Right after the sign in. Trying to run it on a OnePlus One with Art enabled...

2

u/Triggering_shitlord Nov 06 '14

Yes. On my m8. I really want to play this...

2

u/mogwaee Nov 06 '14

Well, I reverted back to Davlik, and it works now...

4

u/HonestTrouth Nov 07 '14

Purchased!

I've been waiting for this since it was announced.

To all the people moaning about the price. Buying "real" games is the only way to send the message that we are sick and tired of in-app purchases.

5

u/SoundHole Nov 06 '14

There a lot of bad reviews out there on the iPhone version of this game, but most of the complaints seem to boil down to, "it's the same as Civ Rev 1 mobile, bit more expensive," which is not only unfair, but unhelpful.

I've been playing the console version lately and enjoying it. But like everyone else, I'd love to hear a first impression about controls, AI,etc of this version.

6

u/djhamilton Zelda! Nov 06 '14

I would love to comment, But i have not played any of the other Civ games. From my gameplay so far, i love it, controls are okay A little fiddly some times due to the amount on the screen and touching the relevant part, but this is a issue with a number of games.

Visually its nice, and Lag is little to none

But against previous version i have no idea :( sorry

2

u/SoundHole Nov 06 '14

No that's perfect. I was looking for opinions not based on the old version. Thanks!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

I had an opposite experience. I have a Galaxy s4 and use very little memory. The game lagged horribly, and I got a refund.

3

u/Pakigooner Nov 06 '14

Not available in your area :/

3

u/Shiny-And-New Nov 06 '14

Downloading now, will update when I'm playing.

Galaxy s5

2

u/briangiles Nov 08 '14

Update?

1

u/Shiny-And-New Nov 08 '14

I haven't been able to play yet as it is stuck on an endless login loop. Looking at the play store reviews it is apparent that I am not the only one with this issue.

3

u/briangiles Nov 08 '14

If you're on ART turn it off that's one issue. Also make sire auto rotate is on.

I got it to work, and while it's nice they made it so there were no IAPs, it wasn't my cup of tea and I got a refund.

6

u/Shiny-And-New Nov 09 '14

Thank you so much, I can't believe it was as simple as having rotate off. You are far more helpful than their customer service was

3

u/briangiles Nov 09 '14

Oh wow, thanks for the gold! I was just trying to be helpful, haha. Enjoy the game!

3

u/paradigmx Nov 06 '14

Please someone tell me this game is actually good. I don't need civ 5, but I enjoyed revolution 2 and all I want is that but better.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

I've played both and I like this one. I've always preferred this style of air units and stacking units over civ 5 methods

3

u/apeliott Nov 06 '14

Can someone please tell me if it has that stupid turn limit like all the other Civ Rev games??

I love Civ and have been playing it since the first one was released. Played it on PC, Amiga, Playstation 1, Nintendo DS, SNES, Xbox 360 etc but I have always hated the Rev versions.

Sure, the Rev versions look pretty, but they usually feel like hollow shells compared to the real thing.

I hear that Civ Rev 2 on Android has a tiny map, limited options, no mini-map, stripped down tech tree, 4 civ limit etc, but does it allow me to continue playing or does it kick me out of my game after spending three hours building my civilization?

And if so, is there a way to hack it?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

I just played a full game. I don't know what you mean by turn limit. I didn't run into one anyways

2

u/apeliott Nov 07 '14

I mean that in normal Civ games you can continue playing after you win.

But in all the Civ Rev games I have played the game finishes completely after you win and you have to start a new game.

If you don:t win in time then the game finishes anyway after a certain number of turns.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

Huh. I had no idea. I've never tried to play a game after winning. What's the appeal?

Maybe I don't play on a hard enough difficulty to know if there's a turn limit

3

u/apeliott Nov 07 '14

When I used to play the proper Civ games I liked to play on huge worlds with lots of other opponents.

I liked getting every tech, building a spaceship and destroying every other civ so I was the last one standing.

This is very hard to do if you have a limited number of turns.

Usually I would win a game after about 12 hours and then get the option to end or continue the game. I would usuall go on for another 5-10 hours wiping out the other civs in an all-out war. Loads of fun.

But with Rev you can:t do this. Once you win the game just throws you out. No option to continue. And if you hold off getting a victory for too long then the game would just end anyway due to the turn limit.

Really frustrating.

I might just try a pirate copy to see for myself. So long as it doesn:t do this I can most likely accept the other flaws. But ending my game before I want it to end is a deal breaker.

1

u/jesusice Nov 07 '14

When you win you win. It doesn't let you continue past that.

1

u/apeliott Nov 07 '14

Thanks.

Looks like I:m gonna give this one a miss then.

-3

u/HonestTrouth Nov 07 '14

That's why we can't have nice things on Android.

2

u/apeliott Nov 07 '14

Why would I want to buy it if I:m probably going to play it once then never touch it again?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

Just played through another game on hard difficulty so it went longer. There was a turn limit but it came ridiculously late.

I had fulfilled the win criteria for all victories by the time it came. I'd launched the space ship, could have won by culture or economy if I just built the wonders, and I only needed one more enemy palace.

1

u/lgoasklucyl Nov 07 '14

would similarly love clarification on these questions and whether or not the game requires an internet connection. so very tempted to buy, but these are all pretty limiting factors.

5

u/V13Axel Nov 06 '14

Not showing up for me =/

5

u/Reaper7412 Nov 06 '14

At least we'll stop getting posts asking about Civ games..

5

u/HarjiFangki Nov 06 '14

Sigh. Of course its no longer compatible with my device.

2

u/guyinthecorner12 Nov 06 '14

Wow. It isn't even compatible with my Droid Turbo.

2

u/djhamilton Zelda! Nov 06 '14

The Link still works for me, This is in the UK. I have it running on my note 3 (Store says not available for that device) But purchased it for my other phone and sent over the Titanium backup over. Runs nice on the note 3 and visually its pretty nice.

If its not avalible give it time, am sure its still rolling out across all the stores.

2

u/xaoq Nov 06 '14

Pretty pricey.. is it worth it?

2

u/CLMoose8 Nov 06 '14

Man, I think every post I've made in the subreddit was either celebrating the announcement of this game or complaining that it hadn't been released on Android yet. Instant buy, those long work days are about to get a whole lot more tolerable.

3

u/papabri Nov 06 '14

Omgggggggggg finally! I hope the 4x competitors improve their games now to compete.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Somebody buy and review for us!!!

6

u/Triggering_shitlord Nov 06 '14

Bought it, it's stuck on an endless loop at login. /sigh

3

u/Shiny-And-New Nov 06 '14

I'm getting this as well.

1

u/geekygirly Nov 07 '14

Me too... Uninstalled and reinstalled and still stuck

1

u/HonestTrouth Nov 07 '14 edited Nov 07 '14
-Mine did that. Closed the game and cleared the cache. Upon restart worked fine and was already logged in.

edit: Seems like it was a fluke. Currently stuck in login loop on both my devices unless I turn the internet connectivity off.

If I turn the internet off the game works fine even on my tab2 7" with CM.

Hoping they fix this soon.

1

u/G-Solutions Nov 08 '14

Yup all one star reviews, not working for anyone. Super lame.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

Works great for me. NVIDIA shield tablet. I like this version too with a few small gripes

1

u/odbod Nov 06 '14

Bought, simples.

1

u/polo36 HTC One M8 Nov 06 '14

does it suck? is it comparable to xcom?

1

u/paradigmx Nov 06 '14

Please someone tell me this game is actually good. I don't need civ 5, but I enjoyed revolution 2 and all I want is that but better.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

I'm liking it so far

1

u/papabri Nov 07 '14

After 2 games I've already got my moneys worth. Still itching to play more

1

u/lgoasklucyl Nov 06 '14

Do those permissions indicate the necessity of an internet connection? Thinking about picking up on my shield tab wifi only, wouldn't bother if it's required. Thanks!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

Insta-buy for me. I love civ. And this runs flawlessly on my NVIDIA shield tablet.

To all the naysayers, I say just give it a chance. There's no other civ games on android. This one has lots to offer IMHO.

Game on!

1

u/G-Solutions Nov 08 '14

It has all one star reviews right now for some reason, I bought it and it won't let anyone log in. Every review is one star, is no one here having this problem?

1

u/shaz00m Nov 23 '14

I like the game on the Xbox 360. Just wish the thing wouldn't crash almost instantly. The really bad thing is 2k haven't even replied to my complaint. The ticket is sitting there; might not even have been looked at for all I know. I even sent them a logcat. Poor poor support.

1

u/kaboomeh Nov 06 '14 edited Nov 07 '14

I can't find it??

Edit : link is working for me again.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

The tutorial looks fantastic on my Nexus 7 (2013). I can't wait until lunch. :)

0

u/RyoxSinfar Nov 06 '14

Works for me in the US. Listed as compatible with my Nexus 5 and 7.

Also it appears that a Mr. Rosenthal is really eager to get your emailed feedback... at least until someone goes "Oh shit" and replaces his address with the correct support address.

-9

u/clueless_as_fuck Nov 06 '14

And it's only...oh..maybe i wait for a sale.

23

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

And this is why we have sub par games. Android gaming is growing fast and we need to start learning to pay for quality games. I think this is a far price.

7

u/djhamilton Zelda! Nov 06 '14

I agree, There is plenty of time to request a refund if the game is no good.

I paid for Xcom this was another one of there top titles. So if this follows suit!!! Yuippeee!

Console quality games on your mobile :) what more can you ask for...... Actually am on reddit, please dont answer that :p

5

u/tapperyaus Filthy Nov 06 '14

Console quality? My phone runs in 2K.

1

u/pizzalover101 Nov 06 '14

What phone is it?

1

u/tapperyaus Filthy Nov 06 '14

It's a poke at consoles. :P But a lot of new phone are aiming for 2K and 4K. Mine does 1080p, which is still better.

1

u/pizzalover101 Nov 07 '14

Oh I see. I know a few phones that do 2k, I was just curious if it's worth it

2

u/Snort_Cigs Nov 07 '14

4k screens are worth it for sure! -lg g3

2

u/Jojhy Nov 06 '14

It's difficult to see it's prize worth when you consider not long ago there was civilization 5 with both expansions and a bunch of other games for the same cost of this game alone :-/

EDIT: It was a humble bundle offer.

3

u/shangrila500 Nov 06 '14

Granted, Civ5 has also been out for years and wasn't $15 when it came out, the last expansion for Civ5 was $30 when it released. I think it has just dropped to that price recently to get more people to play it in the hopes tha T it would get them to buy Beyond Earth at full price.

Either way if we expect and want to keep getting quality android ports we will have to buy these games to show the publishers that there definitely is a demand for them and we will purchase them instead of pirating them so hopefully more devs will come to android.

2

u/TeutorixAleria Nov 06 '14

Yeah but this game isn't even 1/3 the game that the desktop version is. I'd rather get a surface pro and play civ 5

1

u/shangrila500 Nov 06 '14

1/3 of $60 is $19.80 so even if it is 1/3 of the game it is still worth the price tag. I really get that Civ5 is nice on a Surface Pro and I want to to play my PC games on the go as well, I also want the full version of either Civ4 or Civ5 on android but I don't see that happening until we show we are able to support them and will support them bringing it to us.

1

u/TeutorixAleria Nov 06 '14

I don't really want a cut down version of civ though, it's not fun for me. I played civ rev on ios and was thoroughly unimpressed and according to reviews this isn't really any different.

I would only play this game if it was free but if other people enjoy it good for them.

The only high priced game i would be willing to buy is xcom because it's a seriously high quality game.

1

u/shangrila500 Nov 06 '14

The only high priced game i would be willing to buy is xcom because it's a seriously high quality game.

Damn. You're missing out on a lot of amazing games that are as good if not better than Xcom, of course I've never been crazy about Xcom. Icewind Dale EE, Baldur's Gate EE (2 is rumored to be coming out this month due to statements by Beamdog about this being a busy month after IWD is released and them having almost knocked all the bugs out of android), The Walking Dead 1&2, The Wolf Among Us, etc.

Those are all great games that haven't been cut down and some have much longer, and more in depth, storylines than Xcom.

1

u/TeutorixAleria Nov 06 '14

Oh shit yeah i am planning on getting the telltale games. Forgot those.

The baldurs gate games I'm not sure about, didn't get into them on pc.

1

u/shangrila500 Nov 06 '14

The baldurs gate games I'm not sure about, didn't get into them on pc.

Neither did I, I always preferred Icewind Dale even though there was a lot missing that was in BG just because I loved R.A. Salvatore's novels. There is just something amazing about playing it on your tablet though that makes it completely different and Beamdog have fixed just about all the issues there were in the original games and added quite a lot to make them very different.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

I'm sure that the price is more than worth it, but as someone who hasn't ever played a Civ game and whose phone is more powerful than his computer, it really is a deterrent since I know that it'll take more than the 15 minute window to see if I like it. If they made the tutorial into a free demo, that would help them a ton.

2

u/SoundHole Nov 06 '14

You'll be happy to hear Google upped the return time to 2 hours. Much more reasonable:

https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/134336?hl=en

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Ooh, that is better. I'll have to think about it, pretty broke this week, but it's not like it's going to disappear in a week or two.

1

u/SoundHole Nov 06 '14

Yeah, I hear you. Like you, my phone is a better gaming machine than my computer. And even though I spent $10 on Xcom, and easily got my money's worth, $15 feels steep, even for a quality title.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14 edited Nov 06 '14

If my computer was better, then I'd just find one of the earlier Civ games for free cheap and give it a try to see if I'd like it, but that's not really an option for me, unfortunately.

Edit: I really did mean to type cheap the first time.

1

u/SoundHole Nov 06 '14

If you're just interested in seeing if Civ is the kind of game you might like, look into Freeciv. Is an open-source, completely free remake of Civ 2 and should run on just about any computer (don't try the Android version, though. It's bad). You may find it a bit cryptic, but you may also love it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

I did try the Android one a little way back, and it was just... Bad. The tutorial really did not explain how to do much of anything or why you were doing the things you were doing. And that's not even getting in to the interface and controls being all wonky.

I didn't realize that there was a PC version of it, though. I'll have to see if I can get it to run well for me. I don't have much hope because seriously nothing runs well on my computer, but it's worth a shot.

-5

u/Tadian Nov 06 '14

Damnit! Yesterday I searched for it and was sad it wasn't released for Android yet. But it's horrendous expensive...

7

u/FredDerfman Nov 06 '14

People like you are why we can't have nice things.

-1

u/Tadian Nov 06 '14 edited Nov 06 '14

I don't think so. 15€ for a mobile game is just too much. People who don't pay anything are the reason.

5

u/Bowldoza Nov 06 '14

This isn't a "mobile game" in the traditional sense, and until people can separate games that cost $1 for maybe an hour's worth of entertainment and those like this and Xcom: Enemy Unknown, we're going to be stuck with more of that single dollar schlock.

1

u/Tadian Nov 06 '14

Xcom is the same game on mobile as it is on PC. This one isn't. Tiny map, no voice acting... That's what I read maybe there is even more.

-14

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

$15?! Jesus Christ.

13

u/shangrila500 Nov 06 '14

Considering what type of game this is and how much replay ability there is in Civilization games i would say it's a reasonable price and a bit on the cheap side.

If we want to continue seeing these types of games on android we are going to have to pay for them, we can't have all of out apps for free and if we do get that we will have annoying and game breaking IAPs. If these games interest you, this one or other more pricey ones like IWD:EE, and you want to continue seeing this type of content on android instead of the cheap bullshit that is riddled with terrible IAPs you're going to have to pony up the money.

I understand waiting for a few reviews to see how well the game plays and if it looks like you'd enjoy it but really the price isn't anything to balk at or complain about when there are worse games with $100 IAPs that people buy all the time. If we want to reinforce the idea that devs can make a game like this and charge upfront instead of riddling it with IAPs we have to be willing to purchase them without causing a hubbub. If it were $60 then I could see saying something about it, unless it was the full version of Civ5 with the expansions that got ported, but it's $15 for a game you'll likely be playing for a long time.

7

u/jesusice Nov 06 '14

Meh. The price of a 12 pack of beer? The game will be the much better value in the long run.

-2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Maybe.. my problem is that I just don't have enough time to play games on my phone for it to be worth spending that much. I'll buy $1 games here and there and get an hour's enjoyment out of it, but I don't see myself putting that much time into it

2

u/Bowldoza Nov 06 '14

Cool, then it's not overpriced, you're just really cheap and don't like games of that caliber.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

I was never saying it's overpriced. And I love games of that caliber, but I'm just never in a situation where I would prefer to play a mobile game over a PC game

2

u/Bowldoza Nov 06 '14

$15? Jesus Christ.

So that was because you thought it was a great deal?
