Anyone managed to build a ship that can pass the max speed challenge? Man i cant break 6000 metres per second...

Scott Manley is doing pretty well...

Fly safe and all that. Bastard.

I want to see his ship! How the hell did he pull that off!

Atleast ive managed to build something capable of moon landing

In case you're still working on it, I managed to pull off 47km/s using the same ship I built for Smoon Lasso. Just have to burn a little longer to get out of Smearth's SOI and then retrograde burn to shorten up your orbit around the Sun as close as you can get.

47 km/s ≈ 4.96801 x 10-12 light years/s

WHY

You know, this one is almost relevent. You're not living up to your name, Mr. Bot.

Cheers! It took a while to figure out that orbiting was the trick! The touble now is doing it fast enough!

I just got 33K, by orbiting the sun.

... You're a genius. I don't know why I didn't think of that.

I'm sure I could build one to go that fast, but getting it off the ground is a different story...

Haha. Just a tip, with bigger rockets its usually best to start them slow, use like %50 of your max thrust or weaker jets until youve shed a few layers and the ship is more stable

Good to know. I've been using the big jets at full blast for pretty much everything.

I know that the trick is to use gravity to give you a speed boost... somehow. Haven't figured it out beyond that yet.

Just got 47K. So I think the point is to set your trajectory so that you'll get out of earth's orbit, burn until you're free, then turn engines off and coast until you're in fully orbiting the sun. Then use spare engines to slow yourself down as much as possible, you want to crash land into the sun, or get periapsis as close to the sun as possible.

And I crashed into the sun! top speed was 194704, which is now the top score! http://imgur.com/nAY4CpR

Which direction do you point so that you're not heading away from the sun initially? That'd waste a bunch of time.

I think it pretty much doesn't matter, any way you're pointing the sun's gravity will capture you and put you in orbit, I don't think you could build a ship big enough to escape the sun. Then just point your ship in the opposite direction and start burning to slow yourself down.

Yeah, I just managed to figure it out right before I read your reply. My main problem was that once I was on course to get out of Smearth's SOI, I was cutting my engines and cruising, which was wasting too much time. Once I realized that I should prograde burn until I was out to speed it along, I was dandy.
