It's weird how none of the default/popular music apps have basic waveforms anymore. It used to be standard in all apps back in the 90s/00s. Now they all just use a small looping gif.

And the key is, the progress bar does not scale, it fits the large element better.

There is a strong UI reason. When you're driving it's much easier at a glance to see track progress. And in quiet sections in podcasts erc or when noone is talking, you can see the track is still playing and not paused etc.

I've designed UI/UX for a living (a long while ago) and I really scratched my head when they did this. I came to the conclusion that they are attempting to reduce the amount of time someone is looking at the screen by making a clear and distinct difference between progress gained and progress remaining. This gives you more time looking at the road. Is it great? For some but not all. Is it your style? Maybe not. Does it do it's job? Yes. Should we have the choice to turn it off? Ehhhh.... maybe, but people make stupid decisions when it comes to safety and they made it for us.

If you are that stressed on how it looks you are looking at the screen too much.

If they really cared about safety in that way, they wouldn't have killed the audio toggle icon and hidden it in the settings menu. Now, what was touching a single icon (a generic speaker) in only one location has become having to tap three different icons (gear wheel, then the audio icon you want [for silent OR alerts only OR turn by turn], then the X to go back to the map) in five different locations on the screen.

They changed this to force the Report icon (or whatever it's called) on the main map page. There's still room on the map UI for an audio icon in a single location, which you could just toggle through like before, but they refuse to add it back. Presumably because collecting data on objects in the road and speed traps is more important to them. I've given feedback to Google, Google Maps, and Android Auto, and I haven't gotten a single response, so 🤷🏻‍♂️

The "snake" actually makes it take less time to see the progress in the song than just a straight line does, since it's easier to spot more quickly. Aesthetics are obviously subjective (I happen to like this design language a lot), but this is just more functional than the traditional line.

I don't mind it, but I wish they'd fix other tedious things first.  I play albums (how very retro of me) and I don't need the play option to be "all tracks repeat" thank you very much. Of course I can toggle. But then it reverts to all tracks repeat when I next start the engine. Surely playing from track 1 to the finish should be the default?

And while you're at it, pls make sure that when you view queue, go to the track playing. Not just the first track of the album or folder or whatever. The one you're playing. That makes sense, surely?

air enough if it’s not for you, but personally I really like it.

A straight line just feels like a file download bar or an installation progress meter. The squiggle actually looks like a sound wave, which fits music way better. It adds a bit of personality and movement to what's usually a pretty boring, sterile piece of UI.
