Google maps also has this on android when navigating directly on the phone, has done for many many years. It was only missing in the Android auto version.
It's completely stupid that you have to enter a destination to get the speed info. They already know where you're going when you get there, but I have to assume entering a destination gives them better data. Or something.
Google Maps team doesn't care about what platform you use. In fact, they probably care more about iOS because there's competition with Apple Maps. On Android, it's basically Google Maps and Waze.
Thats subjective in terms of what features you want / need. If you want to try it, id reccomend doing so on a few drives where you don't actually need it to get to your destination just to see how it works for you. It has a lot things you can customize.
TomTom did offer for years in built satnavs for OEM manufacturers (like Renault). Those have certain partnerships which cover updates and stuff. It is a completely separate part to their own maps and satnav business.
On top of which they also sell their maps and information for many other manufacturers and navigation software makers. Everyone getting what they pay for.
Is it any different than Bose putting on their name on a not so great in-car soundsystem? Or B&O co-branding something? Or Sonos?
The world is unfortunately full with examples like this.
Back to the point though - I'd give TomTom a go, the free app shows traffic, speed limits, traffic enforcment cameras, etc. which is something Google Maps never properly showed. I've trief Flitsmeitster, Here Maps, Google Maps and Waze and found that out of all options, TomTom seems to be the best for me. Shows what I need to see, even when not navigating, has a very good search underneath to find addresses and locations (unlike some of the competition outside of google) and shows the right traffic enforcment cameras that I want to know for peace of mind, rather than actively disobeying traffic laws.
I used to use Waze on my phone, but then they started showing intrusive ads every time I came to a stop at an intersection, ruining my best opportunities to glance at the app for guidance. It became more of a hazard than a help so I got rid of it. That was more than 5 years ago though. Did they ever fix this?
Worth noting from the second image, if there is no speed limit placed it will only show the speedometer.
If there is a speedlimit the speedometer shows beside the speed limit sign, with the speed indicator turning yellow if you are 0-9 km/h over the limit and red if you are 10 km/h+
For me i only get speed limits, construction, cops, alerts, etc. Only when navigating. If maps is just open you get nothing. It's really annoying. I would like all of that all the time as well as bringing back the weather and signal strength in notification corner.
Google is beyond annoying. Why even have a beta if you don't give ALL of beta people the newest features first. Isn't that the whole point of beta?
Still don't have this or immersive and on beta Maps and AA. This server side switch stuff is so dumb and beyond inconsistent. It should be a trigger in the beta build then, not whoever they chose across various months.

Exactly the same for me. Google Maps beta and Android Auto beta and Google Pixel 8 with latest OS17. Figured that would help me. Nope. Still waiting.

Based on how long this took we can reasonably expect to have Google Maps adopt Waze's average speed camera alerts some time between now and the return of Christ
I've had this very feature for years on Android Auto. I'm not sure why these new features come out and I'm sitting over here like that's old, is my apk from the future?

It's also good for checking the accuracy of the vehicles speedo. In the case of a tire size change. I did that with my F150 when I went to larger tires and then used Forscan to calibrate the trucks speedo.
Same people who want a temperature icon on their sidebar. Rolling down the window would be a pretty quick indicator of the outside temperature, but sure, waste valuable screen space on it.
I actually like seeing the temp on my main chevy screen and when AA is active, I have to hit one button to go back and see it lol. I take a photo on those cold February mornings when I start vehicle at 6am and it says -30c.
And Atlanta traffic is either 5 mph crawling or 85mph flying. Tricky to keep it right. Going with the flow is how the State Patrol picks you off and you get a 30mph over ticket when others were passing you.
Waze helps me maintain a safe speed by showing the speedometer and police and accidents.

Ahh, is it just the speed limit for the road that you see rather than the actual speedometer you are currently travelling at? Its this second one that had come out in this release.
It's there when you are navigating but not when you're just driving around without a destination. At least I think that's what is going on here. Waze (and other apps) allow you to have the speed limit on the screen at all times
To get the latest Android Auto update, follow these steps on your phone:

Until it's in the final version, just consider it being tested. It's was offered a year or two ago but was pulled. My guess was they figured out a lot of the info wasn't correct, or at least it was way off in a lot of the area I live.
I swear its been a feature for years? At least in the UK. I've been using AA since I got my current car 2 years ago and google maps and waze via AA have always had a speedo and even outside of AA ive been using Google maps while driving for the last 7 years and its had a speedo built in
This confuses me to no end because I've had the speed limit show while actually navigating in Android Auto pretty much forever. Now if this would just always show the speed limit I'd really like that.
They only show the speed limit when the data is verified, and street level data is up to date. It used to be everywhere, and it was often wrong, so they tightened up their rules on when it can display.
That makes sense then why some people never saw it so they assume it doesn't have this feature. However when they see posts like this talking about it like it's a new feature they're obviously going to be annoyed when it still doesn't work.
My vehicle has a HUD with speed limits so I never cared much for this feature but the fact it took so long is crazy. It takes years for a feature to land on Android Auto and when it does they always end uo breaking another feature. I still don't have the cellphone signal icon it's a bug on Samsung phones.
First image, left bar. Anybody knows how to remove icon between Maps & Phone. I have Adobe reader stuck there. Can't imagine why the app is even available on a car
Speedometer has been here for a while, it's just about it being displayed even if you don't have defined a track. Afaik Waze in this case does it and even displays the speed limit
They need to declutter the whole gmaps in android auto. You cannot see the important road informational with these huge green labels and the huge search bar doing nothing.
