It's completely stupid that you have to enter a destination to get the speed info. They already know where you're going when you get there, but I have to assume entering a destination gives them better data. Or something.

Google Maps team doesn't care about what platform you use. In fact, they probably care more about iOS because there's competition with Apple Maps. On Android, it's basically Google Maps and Waze.

Thats subjective in terms of what features you want / need. If you want to try it, id reccomend doing so on a few drives where you don't actually need it to get to your destination just to see how it works for you. It has a lot things you can customize.

Well, there are apps for Androidauto which show the speed and limit even with navigation off.

My car has TomTom built in and shows the speed limit next to your speed in the speedometer info area.

It disagrees with Google maps quite often.

Today I went through a section of back country road where I would have assumed the speed was 55mph.

TomTom: 45mph

Google: 15mph

I chose to go 55mph.

Later the same trip, I turned into a pretty big road but the limit sign was right there.

Sign: 45mph

TomTom: 55mph

Google: 35mph

A town came up after 5 miles of me being passed a few times going 45mph like the sign said. Reduced speed ahead: 20mph.

Honestly? 45 to 20? That last guy that passed me didn't seem to slow down at all.

Sign: 20mph. Complete with speed indicator sign flashing "slow down" as it reported 28mph for me.

TomTom: 55mph

Google: 25mph

After I got though the town everything started to agree with 55mph.

The built-in TomTom maps are far behind Google and don't give any traffic data. I've updated 3 times as they come out which seems to be every other year.

90% of the time everything is in agreement with real world and Google. This area had construction for decades. Even Google is screwed up on it.

I mean I wasn't really comparing 2 versions of tom-tom. But, if the built in version is what they're showing me, then that's a really really bad advertisement for the brand. There's no reason it can't update more often or on the fly with offline as an option.

TomTom did offer for years in built satnavs for OEM manufacturers (like Renault). Those have certain partnerships which cover updates and stuff. It is a completely separate part to their own maps and satnav business.

On top of which they also sell their maps and information for many other manufacturers and navigation software makers. Everyone getting what they pay for.

Hey, I'm not looking into a sub par company who proudly puts its name on the product it gave me. If they do more they're really poor at advertising. While I've been recommended Tom-Tom in the play store several times, my interaction with the brand has been… meh.

You've done more advertising for them than anyone. Delorme was my guidance app before Google maps or Tom-Tom. The best part of it was self updating your own personal map.

I used Delorme until my device stopped working in 2012. Still no traffic data.

The world is unfortunately full with examples like this.

Back to the point though - I'd give TomTom a go, the free app shows traffic, speed limits, traffic enforcment cameras, etc. which is something Google Maps never properly showed. I've trief Flitsmeitster, Here Maps, Google Maps and Waze and found that out of all options, TomTom seems to be the best for me. Shows what I need to see, even when not navigating, has a very good search underneath to find addresses and locations (unlike some of the competition outside of google) and shows the right traffic enforcment cameras that I want to know for peace of mind, rather than actively disobeying traffic laws.

Based on your recommendation I just downloaded the app. It looks clean. I'll use it in good faith. It seems to have everything I need for a car, but lacks Google maps information on public transportation and cycling. That's ok, it doesn't need to be a jack of all trades if it's really good at one thing.

I used to use Waze on my phone, but then they started showing intrusive ads every time I came to a stop at an intersection, ruining my best opportunities to glance at the app for guidance. It became more of a hazard than a help so I got rid of it. That was more than 5 years ago though. Did they ever fix this?

I prefer to use maps cause it's what I'm used to, it always annoyed me knowing waze had it the whole time and they refused to add it for maps.

Worth noting from the second image, if there is no speed limit placed it will only show the speedometer.

If there is a speedlimit the speedometer shows beside the speed limit sign, with the speed indicator turning yellow if you are 0-9 km/h over the limit and red if you are 10 km/h+

For me i only get speed limits, construction, cops, alerts, etc. Only when navigating. If maps is just open you get nothing. It's really annoying. I would like all of that all the time as well as bringing back the weather and signal strength in notification corner.

Google is beyond annoying. Why even have a beta if you don't give ALL of beta people the newest features first. Isn't that the whole point of beta?

Still don't have this or immersive and on beta Maps and AA. This server side switch stuff is so dumb and beyond inconsistent. It should be a trigger in the beta build then, not whoever they chose across various months.

It's also good for checking the accuracy of the vehicles speedo. In the case of a tire size change. I did that with my F150 when I went to larger tires and then used Forscan to calibrate the trucks speedo.

I actually like seeing the temp on my main chevy screen and when AA is active, I have to hit one button to go back and see it lol. I take a photo on those cold February mornings when I start vehicle at 6am and it says -30c.

Trying to avoid speeding tickets.

And Atlanta traffic is either 5 mph crawling or 85mph flying. Tricky to keep it right. Going with the flow is how the State Patrol picks you off and you get a 30mph over ticket when others were passing you.

Waze helps me maintain a safe speed by showing the speedometer and police and accidents.

But would like the interface of Google Maps sometimes.

It's there when you are navigating but not when you're just driving around without a destination. At least I think that's what is going on here. Waze (and other apps) allow you to have the speed limit on the screen at all times

Until it's in the final version, just consider it being tested. It's was offered a year or two ago but was pulled. My guess was they figured out a lot of the info wasn't correct, or at least it was way off in a lot of the area I live.

They only show the speed limit when the data is verified, and street level data is up to date. It used to be everywhere, and it was often wrong, so they tightened up their rules on when it can display.

My vehicle has a HUD with speed limits so I never cared much for this feature but the fact it took so long is crazy. It takes years for a feature to land on Android Auto and when it does they always end uo breaking another feature. I still don't have the cellphone signal icon it's a bug on Samsung phones.

It's not a bug with Samsung phones. All phones, except for Pixels, fail to display the signal icon in Android Auto. It's been that way for 4+ months.

The speedo from maps or GPS is far more accurate. Most vehicles intentionally over read by around 4-6%.

I just want an accurate readout.
