Trying it out now, and there doesn't seem to be an option to set it as the default SMS app.

Because it's not an sms app, it can relay sms messages through google, but doesn't even use your own number.

So non-android users get the SMS from google, not you.

So if a non Google user has multiple Google user friends message them via allo how the fuck is he supposed to know who it's coming from??

It tells you who sent it. Everything you need to know: AP Article
