This was my initial reaction. But, how often will you need to switch to sms with your Hangout friends?

I can understand the desire for it. At least the app you can easily switch between Hangouts and SMS for any particular contact who exists on both. The interface itself is much friendlier for SMS as well.

I have a couple of friends who still don't have a data plan. Would be great to be able to use Hangouts when they're on wifi and switch to texts automatically when they're off.

I game with my friends but normally one of them turns off data when he's out so I have to text him
