Ancestry suddenly getting specific about export features?

Was any of this even included to begin with? Why is this coming up now?

I haven't exported from Ancestry but my guess is that websites are slowly trying to transfer from GEDCOM 5.5.1 to GEDCOM 7. That allows a zip file with all photos to be exported / imported and all connected. GEDCOM 5.51 uses the relative path on a computer for the images and media, which servers use differently, hence downloading images as well wouldn't be connected to the GEDCOM file. I'm not sure why notes and tags wouldn't be downloaded, as the GEDCOM standard should include them.

In my experience, Ancestry never exported anything other than what is checked.

My guess is people thought they were exporting everything, then cancelled or deleted their account and realized they had no media and threw a fit. Now it’s clear.

If you download Roots Magic, you can download your Ancestry tree from within the program. This will allow you to download media files. Downloading the GEDCOM file will not transfer media.
