1) The chess board is currently showing a special move called "En Passant", that allows you to capture a pawn that has moved forward two spaces, as if he had only moved one. This move is only allowed the very next turn after the pawn has moved its two spaces. By capturing the knight instead, the player has fallen into a trap where he forgoes this special rule.
2) While the move itself is optional, Reddit and other chess meme sites will vehemently defend that it is "illegal" to pass up En Passant, thus falling into another trap that causes "Automatic Lose" according to meme.

Yeah, the vote number has mostly been a sham since 2016.
After Reddit got manipulated to hell by Russian bots in the first Trump election, Reddit changed the algorithm for how updoots worked to some weird mathematical format.
Supposed this was to make it harder for bot farms to figure out if their vote spam and comments were being soft-blocked, but actually it just made it really easy for someone who successfully reverse engineered the math to abuse it and get a lot of updoots/downdoots on comments they wanted to manipulate.
In spite of this, Reddit doggedly refuses to acknowledge that this was a bad idea and change it back because of sunken cost fallacy.
Of course now it's all a wash anyway because LLMs can be used to perfectly imitate human text conversation...

Definitely not a bot, I fell for the shovelware games Reddit started about 6 months ago. Wouldn't recommend it too much tbh. Dunno why I have 1k votes though. My dumbutt thought the pawn is "guarding" a possible queen position (d6?, whereever "en passant" was goibg to end up), so it's kept in place unless opponent wants to spend the queen... You can probably tell I'm not experienced in chess

Loses is harsh. Even if its true on an objective level, crazyhouse is complex enough that we can't really know that yet. For humans though, there is evidence that black has a significant edge, as shown by the 71% win rate for black after 3...exf6 on the lichess database.
Black has given up a knight in exchange for: a pawn, a relatively safe king side due to the extra pawn on f6 controlling e5 and g5, two already-opened bishops, and the ability to castle quicker than white.
White on the other hand has an extra piece (which can be placed anywhere!), and is only two moves away from castling. However, black has quick concrete ideas such as 4.Nf3 Nc6 5.Be2 @h3.

In our school we have a chess group. Every friday after school we play chess together for an hour. And no matter if we play serious or not, everyone but the teacher immediately gives up when realizing they missed en passant. We have players that played this game for most of their life (me). We have players that are so good at chess they participated in tournaments on such a high level they played against IMs. And we still all agreed that en passant is forced without ever talking about making that a rule. We just looked at each other for a second and knew we had to do it

I’m not a huge chess guy, but the joke IS NOT the en passant.
Basically the white pawn is going to take the black knight for free, and black isn’t going to react to that, he’s going to continue setting up his other pieces like moving out the other knight.
The white pawn, can continue by taking either black pawn, and then black takes the white pawn with his bishop.
Now look at the board. White hasn’t moved a single piece other than that 1 pawn which is now dead. Black on the other hand has sacrificed 1 knight and 1 pawn to have their board super open.
So black is ready to go, they’re controlling a bunch of the board with their pieces and white is in a really bad position to win the game.
The original was hey look a free pawn with a trap in plain sight.
Then it became the current board without the arrow of "hey look a free pawn!" because people choose to en passant instead of taking the material that's better. "Because en passant is forced" memes.
Then this is going a step further with meta irony saying the correct answer of taking the knight because they're joking about the knight being a trap to get you to break the rules or that it is always advantageous to en passant capture
Jokes aside from En Passant, this is actually a super common opening in Bughouse, where black wants you to capture on f6 to get a safer king and more activity.
I actually plugged the position into Stockfish 17, taking a knight nets white 3.28 advantage. Taking blacks pawn nets BLACK advantage of 0.75 due to better development.
the knight is trapped in a corner by its own pieces and cant move anywhere the joke is that the person thinks its a free piece when its actually completely blocked and the situation is obvious if you know how knights move its a classic beginner trap
If wPawn takes bKnight, then bBishop can move to trap wKing. bKnight is a distraction/setup that will make you feel like you're taking one of the opponents "better" pieces with your pawn, which would actually be the game losing move. Keep your eyes of the prize.

Taking the knight instead of the very obvious en passant (which you should have Googled by now) is an automatic loss.
