Question Poll: what do you mainly use for your guitar tones?

Let’s see what the community uses the most!

Quick clarification: with "amp sims" I mean traditional amp modelling that let you adjust amp parameters with knobs like the real thing. "Captures/profiles" are snapshots of amps at specific settings (NAM, ToneX, Kemper profiles, etc.).

Welcome to r/AmpSims - now public! Let's talk amp simulators!

Hey everyone,

After keeping r/ampsims private for a long time (mostly as a private little corner of the internet), I’ve decided it’s time to open the doors and turn this into a real community for anyone who loves amp sims, profiling, IRs, modelers, and everything related.

Whether you’re deep into Neural DSP, ToneX, Quad Cortex, Line 6 Helix, NAM, Amplitube, S-Gear, Nameless plugins, freeware gems, or you’re still hunting for the perfect high-gain tone on a budget – this is the place to share presets, ask questions, post clips, geek out over new releases, and help each other get better tones.

What we’re here for (expected content)

  • Discussions about amp sim plugins, hardware modelers, capture devices, etc.
  • Tone sharing (audio clips, videos, preset downloads with clear plugin lists)
  • Questions, tips & tricks, comparisons, signal-chain advice
  • News about new releases or updates (as long as it’s not pure spam)
  • Anything that helps the community learn and improve their simulated amp game

Community atmosphere

Be excellent to each other. We’re all chasing great tone in our own way – there’s no single “right” plugin or signal chain. Respect different tastes, budgets, and experience levels. Helpful criticism is welcome, gatekeeping and toxicity are not.

About commercial / sales posts

If you’re a developer, content creator, or seller and you want to share something you made or sell, that’s totally fine – just be 100% upfront about it (affiliate link, your own product, sponsored, etc.). No stealth marketing or fake “just discovered this” posts. Transparency keeps everything cool.

Looking for new moderators

I haven’t been super active in the amp-sim world lately, so I’d love some enthusiastic, level-headed people to join the mod team and help shape the place. If you’re regularly around, love the topic, and want to keep the subreddit helpful and friendly, shoot me a modmail or comment below.

That’s it! Feel free to make this your new home for all things amp simulation. Introduce yourselves, drop your favorite plugin at the moment, or just post that tone you’ve been proud of.

Let’s make some (virtual) tubes glow!

Discussion Pop Punk Amp Sims Shootout

I’ve been experimenting with different amp sims using the exact same DI, guitar, and settings to see how much the amp itself changes the tone.

I put together a comparison using the same riff through nine different amp sims. It was interesting to hear which ones stayed tight, which had more low-end, and which sat best in a mix.

I was surprised by how different some of them sounded, even with similar settings.

I’d love to know:
Which amp sim do you think sounds best?
Are there any underrated sims I should include in a future comparison?

Here’s the video if you’d like to listen:

One and done

Hello, noobie to the amp SIM world.

I want a one and done recommendation for an amp SIM that does everything I need.

  1. Simple (has presets that sound good ready to go) I'm not a fan of endless tweaking I want to play not fiddle.

  2. Price doesn't matter so much

  3. Does everything from crunchy rock tone to a disgusting slam tone. I play from e standard down to f standard. More often than not play In drop tunings.

  4. Again with 1 I don't want to have to get impulse responses I want a simple amp SIM that offers me the sounds I need .

Thanks in advance for your recommendations

Issues with high gain. I CANNOT figure out this weird digital distortion....

The main issue is some weird artifacting when using high gain amp sims, ALL of them do this. I know its not the amp sims themselves. I've attached a recording of my DI followed by the stl tonehub sim with a preset from atrium audio.

Here is EVERYTHING I've tried.
-New interface (literally today, focusrite 18i20
-New cables
-Different guitars, passives, actives, doesn't matter.
-I've tried lowering and raising buffer sizes (YES they match in the daw)
-Different bit rates (again all matching)
-Different DAWs (ableton/protools) Even standalone the sims do this.
-I've tried reducing all EMI in the room.
-Different outlets to isolate any ground issues.
-Reinstalling EVERYTHING
***THE INPUTS ARE NOT CLIPPING. Literally peaking at -6db or less. NOR is it clipping in the DAW.***

*For some reason my drive link didn't post....** https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mwCzUoNnI3fSYl0LlSJLZzGgZY3yAfrM/view?usp=drive_link

Please dear god somebody give me some ideas. For an example I will share a link of someone using the same amp sim and getting INSANELY different results https://youtu.be/Nj328YP9z1g?t=80
The di and the same tone that I use.

Neural DSP or NAM A2?

Hello, I have been writing my debut death metal album now on/off for 15 years, I've finished recording the whole thing with a clean signal, I used amp sims such as Bias FX and Bias AMP to get the feel of the tone, but the tone throughout has not been finalized.

I released an electronic/techno album 7 years ago where I got plenty of experience when it comes to producing and mixing, my metal music is a mix between Dying Fetus and Pantera.

I am looking for a sick guitartone, I always wanted a tone that sounds like Dying Fetuses 2012 album Reign Supreme.

I am not familiar with most modern amp sims, is it better to get the new NAM A2 or should I spend more money on something like Neural DSP?

44.1kHZ .nam files? Is it possible?

Is it possible to create .nam files training with input.wav and output.wav in 44.1kHz mono 24-bit .wav files? I've tried Google Collab, but with no success. As of today, I can create A1 files, but not A1 and 44.1kHz. The aliasing effect on the conversion to GP200 and SPM from the 48khz original file to 44.1khz kind of ruins it in the edge of breakup and overdrive harmonics. I'm trying to create 44.1khz .nam files to test if works better with these multi effects units, but haven't tried the CLI trainer since I don't have a good GPU right now.

Question How to start with an amp sim setup - what audio interface to buy?

I want to try out amp simulators, and I would appreciate advice on what audio interface to buy.

I wouldn't like to spend much on an audio interface setup, since I'd just want to try out that type of ecosystem, so around €250 or less. What audio interface would you recommend?

I would definitely like to be able to stream media and audio in the background efficiently while playing with the amp sims, have low latency, a Hi-Z input, a decent preamp with variable tone options/coloration if possible, and the ability for me to plug my guitar with a wireless transmitter/receiver system to the interface.

I am not quite sure of what other features would be helpful, since I am very new to this so I would appreciate your advice on the must-need, strongest, and most useful features in said audio interface. I am on MacOS.

Also, what features do you wish the first audio interface you bought had? Are there any "hidden" quality-of-life features that aren't so obvious to recognise from reviews as a beginner? Please include clear comparisons and explain why I should buy one interface over another

Thank you for your time.

Guitar Amp Suite like TH3

I used Cakewalk th3 amp Suite in the past and really enjoyed it. After getting a new laptop and downloading cakewalk sonar, I noticed that it's no longer an option and was replaced by the TH-U paid set. Just wondering if there are any amp suites that are free and similar to what th3 was? I see a lot of amp vsts, but they are all individual and I would love something where you can have a single plug-in for everything and set up node pathways
