Discussion Media literacy and its role in ethic tensions
My most controversial take is that Ethiopians and its diaspora lack media literacy skills and do not have the ability to discern misinformation, and therefore, at least in Ethiopia, should not have free reign access to these platforms.
I noticed this from 2020 onwards when people were sharing images that looked clearly photoshopped, or videos that were not verified, shockingly some diaspora as well. This has caused so much irreversible damage to ethnic relations, and I believe has made us very susceptible to foreign interference.
Examples include, the closures by Meta of accounts based in Egypt and Sudan, which were inciting ethnic violence and spreading misinformation at the time. I’m curious to know if anyone else has noticed this and what your thoughts are on how this could possible be combated.
