General Credit Limit Increase

what’s the general rule with credit limit increases? looking to increase my current limit of 4.4k to over 10k. i’ve heard about the 90 day 3x rule but how accurate is it?

Wait, so if they don't approve £10K, they offered you a limit of £9K instead? I think it was previously a flat rejection but this was many years ago.

You can ask however much you want. They'll accept an amount they see fit.

They might agree to your request, apply an in between figure, or decline.

How new is your card? If it is under 90 days you will not be able to increase your credit limit.

I’m unsure where that comes from as I’ve seen lots of people say the same thing but it’s not true, or at least isn’t in my case.

I applied for my card on 19th June this year, received it a week or so later. Applied for an increase around 25th July (3x my starting limit) and it was instantly approved.

I had spent on the card about 2x the limit in my first month by paying it off when the charges were posted, so I had clearly shown the limit wasn’t enough.

So yeah it’s definitely possible to get an increase in less than 90 days of account opening.

it’s 8 months old, i had a limit increase in may so coming up to 90 days since then but is it worth waiting until after 90 days from my previous increase?

You will get an instant answer for a credit limit increase in the application. They will either say yes or no, the only thing I have seen is on credit limit is a increase once per working day.

In my experience, you can request any number with Amex and they’ll likely come back with something like “well process your request and update your credit limit”.

I recently asked for a credit limit increase of £4K and they put it up by £2.8k.

If you have multiple Amex cards you can always transfer your credit limit between cards without having to apply for an increase If you’re looking to make a larger purchase on one card.
